NASU is a club that was formed so Native American students would have a voice within the school system, equal representation, and cultural activities geared towards the Native American lifestyle. Throughout the school year we have a lot of events planned which includes weekly speakers, workshops, conferences, field trips and other events for the NASU members. We invite anybody who has a subject of interest that may be of informational value to Native American students to contact me or leave a message at MHS or JCMS so we can put you on the agenda. Elders especially are invited to come by to encourage and motivate the students. we meet at the MHS at 1 1:50 a.m. to at 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. These meetings are for 509-J students and I have been asked to tell you all that unless you are on the agenda for NASU meetings, the 509 JSchool Districtdoesn'twantpeople wandering around in the school building due to security reasons and rules. All visitors to the school are required to check in first at the office and sign in. If you aren't on the agenda for our meeting, then you will not be allowed to interrupt the NASU meeting. We've had people show up with their own agenda, an announced, uninvited and take over the meeting totally disregarding NASU's agenda, advisor and protocol. This will no longer be allowed. This type of behavior is counteractive, disruptive, and confusing to the students. NASU meetings are student oriented, with leamwork, empowerment, and motivation being the central goals. I have invited 3-4 people from various tribal departments as my consultants to help plan events geared to teens. I call or To be put on the NASU agenda, please call me a week or two in advance. Right now we're gearing up for Oregon's Native American week and OIEA' s Youth Conference, to name a few events. This is my second year as NASU advisor and I thoroughly enjoy it. The students are wonderful to work with. I was hired by the 509-J School District. The NASU Advisor is a 509-J SD position. According to the district, I was hired to direct activities so I usually speak on the same subjects at MHS and JCMS weekly. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call me or leave a message at MHS or JCMS. I want to make NASU a positive experience for the Native American students. We need lots of support not opposition. This is something positive for our Native students, they need to feel that they have a spot within the school system. Thank you. Myrna J.
