"' ": "' CULTUREHERITAGE LANGUAGE PROGRAM ;' July-September 1998-Third quarter report October 30, 1998 ACCOMPLISHMENTS: -Language lessons delivered to the Culture Camp at Peters Pasture to 100 youth. -Language lessons delivered to Summer Youth Workers for eight weeks, ages 14 to 17. -September, beginning of WSE Sahaptin language classes for the Kindergarten and First grade. -Receiving and reviewing the Wasco work that Hank Millstein is working on with the Wasco elders.(800 pages) -Working to set a stahdard filing system. -Conversion macro of Hanks' past work to new system. -Valerie on full scholarship to GALTMCGALT training for Foreign Language Application Software. Will provide for interfacing in both MacOs and PC platforms. It will support hypertext links to other text, graphic and sound windows. -Four Language personnel to Honolulu HI for three-week immersion training. Charter School moneys funding. Hosted a session at the training to present our program. All language groups had a part. Technology a major part of the program. All took part in the develop ment of a web page that can be found on the internet through University of Hawaii. Will move to immersion, as opportunities open up for further teacher development and addressing the needs for setting up a class. Also worked with the following subject areas: Pedagogy, Cul ture, Technology, and Material Development, Account ability to the Child. Had opportunities to visit the Ponano Leo schools and see how well adjusted the young people were with using their language only. -KWSO and Spilyay still continue to be aired on a regular basis. Teachers from the three language groups continue to make the time to develop lessons and record them at the radio station. Valerie has been a valuable resource in keeping everyone on task for the media. -One trip to Mt. Wilson for pictures and informa tion on huckleberries. -Another trip to Little Crater lake for skunk cab bage and bear grass. -Other than the Culture Camp and Summer Youth workers classes, all other classes have stopped until school gets back into session. -Back to Boards class held August 1 7 & 1 8 - 6 participants. -Moccasinleggingswing dress classes at Museum August 10-13, 1998, with six students. -Consistent Staff meeting to celebrate share and address concerns of the department. -Met with COCC senior staff and had dinner with them. -Shared with the Pyramid Lake Paiute language group the alphabet we use her in Warm Springs and other curriculum development methods. -Paiute dictionary still being updated from 500 words to 1 400 with sentences. Pat doing primary work, with Shirley consultation. -Received $10,000 additional dollars for PNCP purposes. -Val attended PNPC conference and advisory board meeting at Spokane WA September 17-18, 1998. Funded by PNCP. -Wasco language group field trip to Highrock and surrounding areas. -Wasco workshop with Cliffod and Nelson Moses, who confirmed that they would be presenters at the Spring Break Language summit. -Curriculum development for each of the lan guages has been established by setting specific times to meet and keep on track of the on-going task. -Teacher Methodology classes are being hosted by Alice to all people interested in increasing their knowl edge of teaching methods. -Computer classes for the department, given by Val. -Planning sessions for language summit and for community classes. -Met with WSE teachers prior to school starting, and set time frames for classes in the school. -One student attended the Summer Language Institute at Uof O. Alice and Myra went down for one day to do a presentation to the group. PLANS FOR FOURTH QUARTER: -Implement community classes, at IHS, ADMIN, PARENT, and HOME BASE classes. -Continue to work on Wasco & Paiute dictionaries. -Host one more Back to the Boards class then a holiday celebration for those who attended during the year. -Plan for visiting professors from OSU to the lan guage program and share our program and what can they do to provide assistance. -Continue to plan and organize for the language summit next year. -Shirley Tufti and Pat Miller, with full scholarship to attend the Great Basin conference at Pyramid lake. -Myra, Val, and Alice to attend the Prevention conference at Sunriver. -On-going language development by the three language groups for KWSOSpilyay and other areas. -Generate ideas and how-to's to celebrate the accomplishments of the department. POSITIVE TRENDS: -Continued interest displayed by the young people, especially from Middle School and High School for language in the schools. -High School through counselors are assisting students in acquiring credits for their participation in language classes. -Staff continuing to seek advisement and planning for their degree. -Recognition for the progress that the Language program has made. -Recognition for the need to address the priority area established by the Tribal Council to recruit and train teachers for the three languages. -Supportive leadership to address the issue within the organization. -Community people stepping forward to work with language program. -509-J district moving forward to become more involved with community needs in the schools. -Positive work force with no turnovers in depart ment. Staff going over and above to get the job done. NEGATIVE TRENDS: Lack of parent and adult participation to learn the languages. Have not seen administrators make the time to address their own priorities of language learning. Lack of funding to encourage those interested in learning and teaching the languages. No upper management as role models for language use, and the importance of it. Staff still works too hard to keep up with language materials development, curriculum development, teacher development, writingediting, delivering of the language, secretarial coverage. Director issue still unknown, as result CH is getting minimal coverage. TRIBAL BUDGET: "Limited Duration" exhausted, operations budget on track. Other salaries on track. CHARTER SCHOOL BUDGET: On track. Have ordered the computers. Approxi mately $3,000 left after the order. Have visited with the person taking Sherri's place.
