Attendance officer encourages students
To parents, guardians and stu
dents, This is Mariam Tias, the atten
dance officer with the Warm Springs
Police Department.. I have been in
this position since February 1997
and have worked with teachersstaff
and students since that time. I am
writing this to let you know that I will
be available for assistance in trans
ports to school and will be at Warm
Spring Elementary, Jefferson County
Middle School and Madras High
School again this year.
I have had many contacts and en
joyed getting to know the students in
these schools immensely. I am hop
ing that this school year will be better
than in years past. I would like to
extend my welcome to kindergart
ners to Warm Springs Elementary,
the fifth graders to the Jefferson
County Middle School and the fresh
men to the Madras High School. It is
a great achievement to move up and
know that you've made it. And I'm
sure that parentsgrandparentsguard
ians are very proud of you.
I would like you to know that
attending school prepares you older
children for the work force apd when
your parents are yelling at you to get
out of bed, that is just what they are
doing. Because you will not have
someone there to get you up and
ready for work. So, when your par
ents are waking you for school, re
member that whatever jobcareer you
are thinking about pursuing in your
life attending school is going to get
you there.
I would also like you to know that
tribal law requires you students to
attend and parents to send children to
school. I know I have spoken to some
of the students about this tribal law
and so have parents If you have any
questions about these laws and what
they state, please don't hesitate to
call me at the Police department.
There will be 1 70.5 days of school
this coming year. Can you make it all
of those days? I'll bet you can and
some of you will. I would really
encourage and challenge you to at
tend all 1 70.5 days. It's not that much
compared to your parents working
11.5 months or more and working
2,000 to 2,040 hours a year to keep
you there. Not to mention the hun
dreds of thousands that the Tribes
pay to the district for your education.
Well, I'll quit now and wish ev
eryone a better year and a lot of fun at
school this year. I'm looking for
ward to seeing you all there.
