E Coosh EEWA: 77ze way it is
At one time in the Olden IT 0
Day's there were several CCC
Camps here on the Reservation
The big one was where Quinn
Park is now. Other camps were
located, one in Simnasho, He
He Mill, Old Mill, Schoolie,
Camp one, Peters Pasture and
Camp White Water.
These camps were
established during the
depression years to create
employment for the people.
While they were here they did
all kinds of work, such as
improving watering places for
livestock, built roads, cleared
trails in the mountains and
fought fires, they also built
lookout towers. There was one on He He Butte, Lookout Butte,
Bald Peter, Shitike Butte, Eagle Butte, and Beaver Butte.
All the jobs they done around here were just projects to keep
them busy. There is still evidence of some of the projects they did
like the dam at Red Lake, the one on Quartz Creek called Happy
Val ley Reservoir and several other water storage dams on Schoolie
Flat.
They even built wild horse traps across the reservation, there
was one they built on the Metolius Bench right near "Bunch-a-timber,"
There were a lot of wild horses caught in that trap
because in them days the wild horses were plentiful or overstocked
on the reservation. Stories are that the Army bought a lot of horses
during WWI. They had the Cavelery in them days. There were
other horse traps built by the CCC guys. They also built stock
yards. There used to be a large stock corral built by the CCC guys
right between where the longhouse and Early Child Hood facilities
are at the present time. But time took it's toll and the zoning also
came in where they had that stock yard removed for progress
today.
There were other stock yards built in Simnasho, just east of the
Queahpama home where they had big round-ups during the year.
There was on built at Red Lake, Mutton Mountain, one in Peters
Springs. There were several stockyards built all over the rez.
Yep! The place used to be buzzing around here with all the men
in the CCC camps. What was real interesting was there were some
real good athletes among all the men who came to the camps
where they had a baseball league between all the camps. Each
Sunday there would be abig game here and the baseball field used
to be across from the old Administration in that big square. With
the seven or so camps they had quite a league going. Of course the
Agency camp was the largest and always had a pretty good team
with some local boys added in on the team. The Old Mill team was
a team to beat also as that was the next largest camp. It was
interesting to watch all the games because there were some pretty
good teams from each camp.
There were even track meets here in the summer time with a
full schedule of all events from the field events to the running
events as men or boys from each camp had an entry or two in
every event.. The big track meet used to be held up at Old Mill,
where they built a track and baseball field just east of Camp Old
Mill on the flat. It was the highlight of the summer to go up the
Old Mill for the big track meet.
Another sport that became popular here was boxing, where the
event used to take place at He He Mill Camp. They had an outdoor
boxing ring there and boxing matches used to he held during the
day along the Warm Springs river. There was one guy that even
traveled to box in the Portland-Spokane and even to Seattle to
box, he was a pretty good contender in the feather weight
division.
Yep ! In them day ' s there was a lot of thing taking place around
here, just in the winter months things sort of slacked down
because of road and bad weather conditions. There wasn't any
gym for basketball.
As time passed along the WWII, came and many of the men left
for the service and along went all the camps to where now there
hardly is any evidence of their existence. The Mess Hall at the
Park Camp used to be the powwow building after the camp
disbanded. Today there is just a trace of the CCC camp up at Old
Mill where all the cabins are wearing away and beginning to
tumble down. All the camps just faded away and are no longer
visible.
Yep! All these camps were here when I was just a "Cute Little
Darling." One thing I can remember was when the Japanese
attacked Pearl Harbor and that scared the "Heck out of Me."
AAHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!!
Judicial system has failed to protect a young child in school
To the editor,
I am confused about our judicial
system here in Warm Springs.
Authorities have failed time and again
to protect the basic rights of my
family.
On May 30, my step kids Lance
and Latasha, were at our house for a
weekend visit. Lance and Latasha
are my husband's children by his
former wife Jackie Gabriel. They
were all playing outside with a big
ball. Lance threw the ball at our
youngest daughter Leanna, she tried
to jump over it to avoid being hit.
Instead she stepped on the ball and
fell over, breaking her arm.
That following Monday, our nine-year-old
daughter Tonya, thinking
that was big news as it would be to
any child, told her friends what
happened to her little sister. Not
everybody breaks their arm during
their lifetime. Lance went home and
told his mother and she took it upon
herself to instill some fear into Tonya,
and it worked. Jackie went in to the
classroom and got mad at Tonya and
told her that she should quit telling
stories about her half-brother Lance.
The incident upset her deeply.
Tonya missed half of her play day
and will only remember play day as
the day Jackie got mad at her, while
all the other kids will remember the
fun they had,
The court system and police
department don't want to do anything
about it. I went into the police
department signing a complaint
against Jackie and they pursued it for
almost two months, "We can't find
her to serve her papers". . . "she's
never home". . . "I didn't have time,"
are the excuses I heard until they
decided it wasn't enough of an issue
to pursue it any longer. Is Jackie
above the law around here? Does her
anger and bitterness scare the judicial
system too? When she gets angry
you can see it in her face. Just ask
Tonya. Who's to stop her from doing
this again to one of my other kids?
This happened June 6, "Play Day,"
at the Warm Springs Elementary
School. My daughter missed half of
her play day because she was crying
and upset about what happened in
herclassroom. When Jackie glares at
me, I can see that there's hatred in
her eyes. And when she glared at
Tonya and got mad at her, and told
her what not to do, Tonya was scared
and upset. She cried until about three
o'clock.
My husband has been through
court with Jackie year-after-year.
They have unsettled court matters
and our kids don't know anything
about it. I put up with Jackie when
she flips me the bird or calls me a
"bitch" or f ing bitch but our kids
should not have to put up with her
hatred and bitterness. My husband
and I know enough to try and ignore
her anger toward us but our kids
don't. I have never done anything to
Jackie for her to hate me so much and
neither have our children. I feel that
Jackie should have to own up to her
actions and realize that she was wrong
to have contact with our daughter at
her school just to upset her in front of
her classroom and friends.
Guest shocked by Resort prices-
When something is done to her, or
she's not getting what she wants,
Jackie's right there at the court house
complaining, wanting something
done about it, RIGHT NOW! They
jump around for her and she gets
what she wants. They don't hesitate
to serve my husband his papers for
court.
She's not even a tribal member
here but she has all her rights
protected. Where's the protection of
my husband's rights as a father and
our children's rights? She doesn't
even want his own kids to visit him,
just keep sending the money. Do
their rights matter here on the
reservation? There have never been
so many hardships caused to my
family. Her actions against my
husband affect our whole family, not
just Tony. If she gets away with it
this time, what about the next time,
and the time after that? For a person
who claims to be a Christian and a
changed person she certainly has a
lot of hard feelings and anger toward
other people.

To the Editor,
I gave myself a week to think it
over, and it needs to be said, so here
goes. Last week, our part of four (two
nine-year-olds and two middle age
mothers) decided to pay our first
visit to our local tribal resort. The
resort is very advertised, and we an
ticipated a leisurely, summer after
noon. The plan was for the kids to go
swimming while the moms relaxed
in the shade and caught up on each
others' lives. Hah!
First, there was the fee to park the
car. It seem a little steep, but we
knew it was a resort, so we paid it. A
quick trip to the snack bar for a pre
swim snack was unsettling, at just
under $20, including the cost for a
cup of water. Then, the real kicker
came. The pool advertises its price to
swim (which I had called about be
fore we drove up there) but fails to
tell you it is an extra charge to use the
waterslide. There is nothing else to
do there, with the exception of one
low diving board. So, we paid the
extra, for use of the waterslide. Next,
the clerk wouldn't let the kids swim
unless an adult was with them. Yes,
they have plenty of lifeguards. Do
they think parents are going to drive
clear up there just to let the kids off
on their own?
Okay, we agreed to sit with the
kids. It was obvious we weren't go-
Where are our children?
To the Editor,
It seems as though we take our
children for granted. Do we really
know where they are? What must it
take for us to keep a close bond or
control of our children? A lot has
happened within the last month here
in Warm Springs; theft, dog fighting,
vandalism, assaults, motor vehicle
accidents, alcohol and drug involve
ment, gangs, shootings and a mur
der. A lot of parents in the community
need to take a good look at what our
children are doing in Warm Springs.
I was always told when I was young
that there is a devil out there that is
looking for someone to take with
him and to really be careful of what
I do because he could come and take
me some day. Our Longhouses,

Parents, look at what is going on
in the community, Please take some
time to sit and talk to your children or
know where they are and what they
are doing!. Let them know you care
for them and set an example for them
because they see what you are doing

to grow up that way?
We really need to pull everyone

Concerns voiced
To the editor,
Hello from Pastor Rick . . .Well, it
has been some weeks since writing
an article for the paper. It was a
combination of vacation time, pow
wow time, and getting through the
4th of July. So I guess I have some
catching-up to do. I think I will unload
my heart of the nagging issues of
prayer. First. To one and all we need
a seat-belt law on the reservation for
the children. Let us save the life of
the children. Second. Before you go
gambling at the casino, pay your bills
and make sure there is food for the
family. Before you gamble take a
moment and think about tomarrow.
Third. Is your house and property
ready for the grass fire that will come.
Living in the grass lands means that
there will be fire. Check your property
for a good safety zone all around. Let
the fire go around you not through
you. Fourh. Is beer and booze the
love in your life? Are drugs and dope
the real hope that keeps you going?
All of this will take you down. It will
take your health down; your
relationships down; your spirit dow n.
Find someone who is clean and sober
and ask them for advise on how you
can get the same good health in you.
Sixth. The love of the Lord is where
its at. Go find His Love. See you in
church. 10:00 a.m. Worship.

ing into the pool, as were wearing
longs pants, and only carrying our
purses. "That will be $28." I though
I hadn't heard right! We were being
charged full admission prices just to
sit on a chair, and the clerk refused to
let the kids swim unless we paid it. I
asked the supervisor if what I had
been told was true. She concurred.
My friend is handicapped, and must
rely heavily on a cane to walk. Yes,
she too had to pay, and they wouldn ' t
even give her a chair to sit on. The
pool side chairs are mostly low plas
tic loungers, and the rest are metal
chairs affixed to tables both very
hard for her to use.
Since I was there, the kids were
anxious, and I didn't feel like caus
ing a scene over what was a case of
extortion, I paid my fee for two kids
swims, two kids waterslide, and two
adult admissions. Once in, we had to
Kindness & love
appreciated
To the editor,
The AureliaStacona family would
like to send a heartfelt Thank You to
all the families and friends who came
to help during the funeral. Your dis
play of love, support and kindness
delivered an inner strength to the
family that cannot be put into words.

my friend.
The Redmond family who gave
us a chair also had a story. It seems
they had decided to bring their eld
erly grandmother along for the out
ing. Shocked, they also paid full price
for Grandma who struggled to sit on
either of the available sty les of chairs .
This is not the Central Oregon way!.
We extend courtesy to our elderly
and our handicapped, don't we?
So, let this stand as a word of
warning. Our local Kost-Me-Lot re
sort doesn't cater to the local crowd.
From now on, I'll support my local
pool and let the Portland crowd sup
port the resort. Oh yes, the afternoon,
to take two kids to the pool, cost me
just under $50.
