From the Language Program
by Valerie Aguilar
There is great demand for language classes
especially by Middle and High school age students.
This was made quite apparent when 1 86 students
signed up for language classes: 6 for Paiute (or 3),
76 students for Wasco (or 41), 104 students for
Sahaptin classes (or 55), while employed with the
Summer Youth Employment Program. Hat's off to
Verleen Kalama, and WEDD for recognizing a students
desire and following through with it! BELIEVE IT OR
NOT: This agrees with popular belief in Indian Country
that there is a Language and Culture revival especially
apparent in our youth. (Way to go students!)
To encourage our youth, the language program
will offer Community classes in the evening (starting
this fall) to learn one of the three language classes
spoken by our ancestors, join us. Due to an increased
interest in learning the Wasco language by younger
adults, there will a class starting in September (after
Pelton Round-up). This will be a good beginning class'
as well a refresher for those who haven't been' to class
in a while (you know who you are...).
We would also like to take the opportunity to
welcome Melissa Wainanwit on board, who is working
through the JTPA program and whom we are hoping
will continue with us in an apprenticeship position. And
please welcome June Aguilar our summer youth
worker.
For those of you who wish to brush up on what
was taught in previous classes, the language lab is
open 8-5 on most days, drop on in.
