The Tribal Council of the Con
federated Tribes of the Warm Springs
Reservation would like to announce
the following vacancies:
Warm Springs Gaming Commis
sioners (2 Positions)
1) Establishment of Gaming
Commission. There is hereby estab
lished by the Tribe a Commission to
be known as the Warm Springs Tribal
Gaming Commission (hereafter "The
Gaming Commission"). The Gam
ing Commission shall be composed
of three persons, who shall be desig
nated as "Gaming Commissioners."
Gaming Commissioners may be
members or non-members of the
Tribe, provided that not less than one
Gaming Commissioner shall be a
tribal member.
2) Selection of Gaming Com
mission. The Tribal Council shall by
motion appoint a five-member Gam
ing Commission Selection Commit
tee (hereafter "The Selection Com
mittee") and two members at large.
Members of the Selection Commit
tee may be either members or non
members of the Tribe. The Selection
Committee shall establish procedure
for notice of vacancies o the Gaming
Commission, recruitment of quali
fied applicants, interview and selec
tion process. The Selection Commit
tee shall submit their nominee(s) for
any vacancies on the Gaming Com
mission to the Tribal Council for
confirmation and appointment by
Tribal Council Resolution.
3) Disqualification of Office. The
following person may not serve as
Gaming Commissioners
A) Members of the Tribal Coun
cil; B) Employees of any gaming en
terprise on the Reservation;
C) The immediate family of any
gaming contractor (including any
principal thereof or closely associ
ated independent contractor). For the
purposes of this section, immediate
family members are defined as hus
band, wife, son, daughter, mother,
father, brother, sister, grandfather,
grandmother, legal guardian, or other
totally dependent relative of the indi
vidual. D) Persons who would not be eli
gible to receive a gaming license
from the Tribes; or
E) Persons having any interest in
or responsibility for, either directly
or indirectly, any gaming related con
tract with the Tribes or any gaming

The Bitterroot Valley Good Nations Powwow was founded on
November 1, 1993 to provide cultural education of Native American
people.
The Good Nations Educational Program was created after the
first Powwow, in response to the growing demand from local
people. It addresses the need for local Native history to be shared
with the general public.
It is the goal of the committee to strengthen inter-cultural relations
with an appreciation for individual heritage. It is through education
that we can learn respect for one another.

Reemployment Rights
A person who left a civilian job
to enter active duty in the Armed
Forces may be entitled to return to
the job after discharge or release
from active duty. Reemployment
rights are provided for those who
rendered active-duty service,
initial active duty for training,
acti ve duty for training or inactive
duty for training. To be
reemployed, four requirements
must be met: (1) the person must
give advance notice of military
service to the employee; (2) the
cumulative absence from the
civilian job shall not exceed five
years; (3) the person must submit
an application for reemployment;
veteran to be placed in the job as if
the veteran had remained
continuously employed instead of
going on active duty. This means
that the person may be entitled to
benefits that are generally based
on seniority, such as pensions, pay
increases, promotion and transfers.
The law also protects a veteran
from discharge without just cause
for one year form the date of
reemployment, and a reservist or
National Guard member from
discharge without just cause for
six months after returning from
initial active duty for training. The
law also prohibits discrmimination
in hiring, promotion or other
advantages of employment
because of one's obligation as a
member of the reserve or Guard
unit.
Applications for reemployment
should be given, verbally or in
writing, to a person authorized to
represent the company for hiring
purposes. A record should be kept
of the application. If there are
problems in attaining
reemployment, the applicant may

and Training Service (VETS) in!
the state of the employer'
concerned.
VETS administers the law for
federal employees, including those;
in the Postal Service. Employees
should contact their agency
personnel office about rights
restoration. If a job is not restored,
the employee has the right to
appeal to the Merit Systems

through VETS' Advisor Expert
System.
Unemployment Compensation
Weekly unemployment
compensation may be paid to
discharged servicemembers for a
limited period of time. The amount
and duration of payment are
governed by state laws. To apply,
veterans should immediately
contact their nearest state
employment office after leaving
military service and present a copy
of their miliary discharge, form
DD-214.

Veterans Health Fair Set For July 25

Louise Arlene (Smith) "Lau
Stat" Langley was born December
26, 1926to parents Luc inda (Scott)
and Alfred Smith, Sr. in Warm
Springs, OR. She want on to join
her beloved children, relatives and
friends on July 3, 1998.
Louise will always be remem
bered as a hard worker. She worked
at the Cushman Indian Hospital in
Tacoma, WA prior to her marriage,
worked seasonal jobs in the potato
harvest and as a cook at the Warm
Springs school cafeteria. Also she
stocked vendingmachines through
out the communitv.
She married Allen Langley Sr.
on February 25, 1945 in Stevenson,
WA, this year celebrating 53 years of
marriage. Louise was an avid
craftsperson making homemade
quilts, crocheting, sewing and shar
ing her work with her family and
friends. She also enjoyed gathering
and preparing traditional foods and
trading with her friends.
Preceding her in death are two
sons, Wayne "Buzzy" Langley and
Allen Langley, Jr. along with her
parents.
Survivors include husband Allen
Sr.. children Maxine (Mike)
Clements, Larry (Stella) Langley,
Mariu (Delford) Johnson, Cinda Lu
(Levi) Bobb, Lori (Tommy) Fuentes
and Noree (Rodney) Guerin all of
Warm Springs. She is also survived
by many grandchildren and great
grandchildren whom she loved and
cherished so much, along with many
relative and friends.
A traditional Wasco dressing was
held Monday, July 6, 1998 at the
Bel-Air Funeral home in Madras. A
service as held Tuesday. July 7,
1998 at the Warm Springs Presby
terian Church followed by burial at
The Agency Cemetery. Services
were officiated by Margaret Boise,
Chief Nelson Waliulatum and Larry
Dick.
Jefferson County Veterans will
have a "Health Fair" on July 25,
Saturday, at the Jefferson County
Madras Senior Center. Portland
Veterans Administration Medical
Health Center, Warm Springs Indian
Health Services, Jefferson County
Mental Health, Oregon Department
of Veteran affairs, Oregon State
Employment Division, Jefferson
County Veterans Service Office; and
others will be set up and available to
assist veterans. VAMHC is going to
have hearing testing. IHS will have
diabetes evaluations. There will
genera health areas, benefits
information, VA Medical forms for
the new VA Health Plan.
This is going to be a fair for all of
the veterans to stop in, check their
health, benefits, find out information,
ask questions, meet personnel from
the different agencies that are there to
assist the veterans.
This will be on Saturday the 25th
of July, from 12:00 to 4:00, at the
Jefferson County Madras Senior
Center in Madras.
The Jefferson County Madras
Senior Center is located at 860 SW
Madison, in Madras. Which is
northeast of the County Fairgrounds.
Just South of the Catholic Church,
which is at the corner of Madison and
J Streets.
