Well we can sit back and I T 0
relax for a few moments now
that the new Tribal Council
members have been installed
into office. We have a new
Chairmen, a new Vice
Chairmen, and a new Secretary
Treasurer.
Let's hope things will work
out the way we would like them
to. It's a tough job to undertake
loaded with heavy
responsibilities. We must move
on with what we have one thing
at a time and not get left too far
out of the modern world. Times
change and new methods are
always coming in and we have to be ready to meet those things.
Yep! The days of the Ole Horse 'N' Buggy, have long gone out
and we have to catch up with the new world.
We;;, we had a lot of promises made by all the candidates
before election so now we must sit back and see if they will fall
into place. I still say on that pile of priorities, our most important
one is the protection of our treaty we have with the United States
Government . The treaty of 1855, we have to continue to make
progress in what ever venture we set out in. Improve our enterprises
such as the Indian Head Gaming, WSFPI, Kah-Nee-Ta Resort,
and all the other programs we have going for us.
We still have many things of value that is worth working with
and hopefully our Tribal Council will do well while in office.
Rodeo's, Rodeo's and more Rodeo's
It's May and a lot of things happen during the month of May.
Mainly the out door sports as the weather warms up after that long
winter. One of the biggest event all across the country is in the
rodeo arena. The first rodeo for the Indian Cowboy's is the Tygh
Ridge All-Indian rodeo. A replica of the old All-Indian rodeo of
old in Tygh Valley, which was a big hit for years and years until
just recently the committee disbanded or something.
This year a few good people got together and started planning
an All Indian Rodeo, trying to bring back the rodeo in that area
once again. The group that put on the rodeo disbanded and started
fading away, but with the hard work of a few good people the
rodeo might become a top draw once again.
"It's Rodeo time," As the grand'entry comes into the arena and
usually there is band music over the sound system, and with the
horses in the bucking chutes for the first section of bareback
; riding you can hear the racket of horses kicking the chute gates
; with a big bang. The rider putting his rigging on the horse and the
I flank man putting the flank on the horse which spooks him and
' makes him jump and kick and really acts up.
Usually in the bareback a young cowboy maybe making his
first rodeo, a little nervous when his horse acts up. As he sets his
rigging his hand trembling a little with butter flies in his stomach,
tries to swallow but there is nothing to swallow, just a big lump
in his throat and his heart beating a lot harder than usual.
Finally the chute boss comes by and gives the command,
"Alight men, chinch-um down." As soon as the grand entry clears
the arena we will start at chute 8 and on down. Be ready when your
turn comes or we'll turn your stock out. Even though the cowboy
, may have been practicing before the rodeo he is still a bit nervous
, as he watches the guys come out ahead of him.
Finally it;s his turn and he straddles his mount in the chute,
takes a deep breath and with a trembling hand he grabs hold of his
rigging, a big lump in his throat, gets all set and shouts, "Let's
have him men!" The chute gate fliles open and you can hear the
horse grunt snort and as he jumps out and your high in the air you
feel that sensation of greatness as yous sit atop of the jumping,;
lunging bucking horse, you see the ground than the horse snaps
your head and you see the blue sky, ground and sky, ground and
sky, tiyr feet up over the points of the horses shoulders trying to
make as many points to score high on that lusty mount hoping to
get into some of that day money. On his first mount he usually gets
bucked off or manages to hang on to make the ride. After he is on
the ground and walking back to the chute, he thinks, "that was not
bad at all." He is hooked on rodeos.
Some guys want to become rodeo cowboys but their rodeoing
comes to a quick halt especially when they really get bucked off
real hard and are injured. Rodeoing is one of the roughest sports
in the world today and everyone must expect to get hurt in the
rodeo game.
Yep! Everybody has bitten the dust at one time or another while
rodeoing. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!!
Member unhappy over Jr. Rodeo
To the editor, nated money so we could write them
I'm writing this letter to tell you
how we got the shaft from last year's
Jr. Rodeo (I was the Jr. Rodeo secre
tary and the late Nadine Scott was
the Treasurer). After we had the Ro
deo, Sammi wouldn't call a meeting
to tell us how much money we made.
In a telephone conversation a month
after the rodeo, Sammi said there is
no Jr. Rodeo anymore, it's her &
Clint's Rodeo Association.
We know we made over a thou
sand dollars, I know that let alone
late Nadine being the treasurer
thought her name should be on there
in a bank with both their names but
Sammi dealed with all the money.
She wouldn't give us a list who do-

thank-you notes. She was too busy
with her movie last year, that me &
Attwa Nadine did a lot of hard work.
We tried to ask Sammi for money
to have a Kid's Rodeo during Huck
leberry Feast. She told us we weren't
getting none of that money, so we &
attwa Nadine start planning for '98
saying we wanted to have 3 rodeos
this year for kids to keep them out of
trouble. From that we wanted to start
planning to rebuild the HeHe corral
or get another arena going for Jr. or
Peewee rodeos, whatever you want
to call it, Jr. Rodeo meaning wild colt
race and Jr. bulls & bareback, Pee
wee is no rough stock.
