SpilyayTymoo Warm Springs, Oregon April 23, 1998 5 Composite Products adds Saudi Arabia firm to The people of Saudi Arabia this year may be slamming doors made, in part, in Warm Springs. The DE Plant, on April 3, sent a shipment to a door company in Saudi Arabia. Five container loads of door cores are being shipped for use headquarter facility, office building and apartment building. The first two container loads contained468doorcores, the third contained more' than 600. The fourth and fifth loads will be shipped by mid-May. The products sold for $280,000, which enabled the plant to add a swing shift the first part of March and hire seven , additional employees. There are now 29 employees at DE. The plant produces 50-70 cores per day depending on the sizes they are making. Each core sells for $104.10 to $116.68 depending on the size. Saudi Arabia is a newcomer to DE's international market. The plant sells their product to two customers in the United Kingdom, as well. Domestic sales to customers in the United States are mostly in the mid-west but distribution has gradually spread throughout the east and west. Their largest competitor is Weyerhaeuser, who is also one of their largest customers. Georgia Pacific is another competitor, whom they take a large market share from. The DE Plant has been making a profit since 1997, that was $100,000. Profit turn around has been due to increase in sales and reducing waste, salvaging trimmed portions for use by other customers desiring products of a smaller size. The reuse of dust into mixture for filler in refractory block kits has produced more product for selling. Exercise for t 1 1 Terry Luther, (center with basketball) I f7 - j I' Ivy Congratulations to "Exerciser of the Mo' ih" for March and April to Terry uther, of Fish and Wildlife. Terry's favorite type of exercise is playing basketball and working out on a stationary bike. He exercise's eight to ten hours five to seven times a week. He has been doing it for the past twelve years. "What motivated me to start exercising is a knee injury and I began exercising to rehabilitate ' it. I have since injured my other knee and have continued to exercise to keep them both strong. Exercise benefits Terry both physically and mentally, he says. "It keeps me in shape which helps when I participate in my favorite pastime, hunting! Exercise also keeps down stress and I find that my af ternoons are much more productive after exercising at the Community Center during lunch hour. Having the Warm Springs Com munity Center to work out is one of the biggest fringe benefits I enjoy in my job." Terry's exercise regimen is not goal-driven. "I don't really exer cise to reach any type of goal, I just finished product has come from employees working on the production lines. The success of the DE has been team effort by everyone employed at DE. "Everyone has input," says Steve Brown, Sales Manager. The Warm Springs based plant got its beginning when a Joint Venture was signed by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Structural Technology, Inc. (STI) February 2, 1992. The DE Plant began its operation February 10, 1992 producing environmentally friendly, fire resistant refractory and door materials. The Economic Developent Initiative Fund allocated $250,000 to start up operations. The Tribal Council advanced $1.3 million to the pilot project. Moose life do it mainly to keep fit. My stumbling blocks when it comes toexercising regularly is when I have noon meetings or have to be out of town on trips. I don't like to exercise by myself because I prefer to compete with others." Most funny or exciting thing that has ever happened to Terry during exercising, was "I had a shot blocked by Terry Squicmphen in a basketball game." Words of wisdom Terry would like to share with others about exer cising: "Start out with a reasonable expectation and don't burn out. In order to keep fit, you must exercise regularly." Exercise fits in well with Terry's hobbies: hunting, fishing and playing basketball. "If I had no limitations on myself whatsoever and could do any activity I really wanted to do, I would go on an extended hunting trip to Alaska." "You can't believe the many benefits exercise provides to one's mind, body and outlook on life. Try it, stick with it, and you will never regret your decision," Terry advises. i i "1 referendum passed, DE purchased automated assembly equipment and other materials. The DE Plant received $2.4 million-$l .0 million from Economic Development Grant and $1.4 million from the Tribes. There have been changes in the plant as far as machinery. The raw materials were being mixed manually by employees pouring the mixture into the mixers. Now it is done by machine. The mixers were also mo ved to the back of the building. They operated with only one dryer but another dryer was brought online to speed up the processing. The dryer they have been using has been refurbished. The General Managers have changed through the years as well. DE has been advertising for a General Manager since January. Stuart Hess will become the General Manager around the first of May. Encouragingly, Neda Wesley . 74 Brother is proud To the editor, I read a recent article about the youth's academic achievement awards, presented to elementary and Jr. High School students of Warm Springs. Youth received bronze, sil ver and gold metals. I am very proud of these kids. It always makes me happy to read about how the little people are do ing, especially when they're happy smiling and doing well. As the article continued on aca demic excellence. I was captivated Forgiveness is To the editor, Back in 1994, I experienced a tragic accident with the loss of a child. At that time a member of the Shaker Church had said some hurtful words to me which kept me from going to Shaker meetings anywhere. Back in 1996, 1 had an electrical fire in my rental unit which cause us to have to move. Because I had no place to store my personal belong ings, I continued to store them in the rental unit. The house was broke into an' set on fire, my belongings were showing up around the community. In 1 997, in another rental unit, the break ins continued and vandalism to my vehicles began. To have any thing nice began to be impossible. To trust anyone was impossible. To ask for help meant some kind of payment in return. It was no longer safe in a home because something would be hap pening on the outside, it was no longer safe on the outside because some thing would be happening on the inside. shipments sent Raffle tickets on sale Starr Stick Game Raffle to be held during Pi-Ume-Sha Weekend, June 26, 27, & 28, 1998. $1 each or 6 for $5.
