It's almost time for our new
setofTribalCouncilmentotake
oath of ottice and win soon
resume their duties for the next
three years. They will find that
their job is no push over as this
is one job with a lot of
responsibility concerning the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs. They will be making
all the important decisions
regarding the welfare of the
whole reservation. Let's just
hope they will do the right thing
and keep up with the ever
changing world and not get too
far behind as to where we are
left behind.
Top priority in my books is
our treaty rights, as there are
always people trying to find
loop-holes to where they can break our treaties we have with the
United States Government.
It appears as though the Whiteman always wants to have a hold
on the Indians especially when it looks like the Indians are doing
well for themselves on projects that are doing well for them they
try to stop them or take it away from the Indian people. Take the
Indian gaming facilities across the country where some tribes are
doing well the Whiteman wants to either stop it or take it away.
Yep! Today Indian gaming is a big topic in the country where
there are many who feel that the Indians are doing things illegally
by operating those gaming centers and they are doing well for
some tribes and they are almost self-sufficient in their operations.
These things hurt the non-Indian population because they are not
in this situation with a project such as the Wildhorse, Spirit
Mountain or the Indian Head Gaming centers. Like I said before
the Whiteman always wants the Indian people to be in the begger's
column and not in the prosperous section.
For years and years they have been after the Indian Fishing
Rights across the country and even came to some close violent
situations especially in the Great Lakes area, where they were
trying to do away with the Indian spear fishing. People in that area
really don't know about the Treaties the Indians have with the
Government.
There are just a very few Indian reservations where the Whitman
doesn't completely rule and we here in Warm Springs are one of
them. No Whiteman or any other race owns land within our
boundaries that have any kind of power over the Indians. We
maintain our own life style operate under our own Constitution
and By-Laws, as a good example of a sovereign nation.
Yes ! When we signed the treaty ceding millions of acres of land
to the United States Government and agreed to live on a small
reservation, we retained our rights to hunt, fish and gather fruits
and vegetation in all accustomed grounds. These are things the
non-Indian race don't understand today. Some have never heard
of the treaties and what they stand for with all the Indian tribes.
That's why its so important for us to protect our treaties with the
United States Government
It was disappointing to see that agreement between the Federal
Government, the State and the Tribes last year where in my
opinion we never gained anything in that agreement on our water
rights where the Feds and State had a lot to gain. The only thing
we got was a pat on the back which only the leaders celebrated
that. And doing all the ceremonies that took place at Kah-Nee-Ta,
we the tribal members took the back seat of the whole "Sha-bang !"
Everything was set up for the non-Indians and we had to be off to
one side. A big disappointment.
Let's hope there won't be anymore agreements made with our
natural resources in the future, because it's own and we should
hold fast on what's left. We've got to be prepared to face people
like Slade Gorton, (R. WA), in the future. . . . AHH-N AH-CHI-TOON!!!

How safe are the
roads?
To the editor,
Friday, April 3, on my way to
Kahneeta, on Highway 26 county
line road, there was an accident. The
police radioed in to let the rest know
everyone was okay. But the lady still
wanted her two-year old baby
checked over. So as we passed there
were 2 police cars on the scene. Down
the road the ambulance passed, then '
another police car, soon after a fire
truck. About 5 minutes later on the
Kahneeta road a second fire truck
radioed they were headed toward the
scene.
Anyway, my concern was the
safety of the rest of our people, when
6 vehicles were at the scene, which in
the beginning everyone was okay.

It would seem that it would make

Thou shall not kilL.sayeth the Lord
To the editor,
Hello from Pastor Rick. Thou shall
not kill...One of the te command
ments says in English - thou shall not
kill. ...You know English has limits.
What the broader language of Old
Testament Hebrew says is thou shall
not killmurderafflictdestroy with
evil intent. Under the Hebrew back
in the 70's President Jimmy Carter
got in trouble when he talked about
lusting in his heart was the same as
adultery. It is true using a good trans
lation of the words.
So, how many killings have you
done this last week? How many bad
thoughts have you told yourselves
against someone else? How many
bad vibes have you sent out to strike
at someone? All this talk is because
Poem sent
To the editor,
I am submitting this poem on behalf
of our elders who are lonely:
THE TIME IS NOW!!
You say you love your mother.
You say you love your aunt.
You say you love your
father...but visit them you can't!
Two hour's drive to Portland;
One and a half to Bend;
Some lengthy trips to pow
wows to dance & laugh & spend.
But just around the corner
A lonely elder waits,
And nod a tired forehead with
eyes upon the gate.
You think they'll live forever
And that they cannot not.
Or say, they do not know
you..but that is just a lie.
Why not invite them over, if visit them
you won't?
Tears later are just worthless
When visiting, you don't.
Don't ask me for your sympathy
When that loved one's no longer
around,
And you haven't been giving
time to the living
So your tears of regret abound.
The time is not then at the journey 's
end
To show your regret and sor
row. Just show them how the time is NOW
That you love them 'til every
tomorrow.

I seem to run into more and more bad
feelings, bad mouthing, and bad atti
tudes. And so I remind everyone the
simple truth of any Spirituality. God
is listening to us all. Our voices, our
sounds, our thoughts is all an open
book to the Lord. I am not saying that
God is nosey, but He seeks a constant
involvement with his creation. So
my advice is once ill words are
thought or said, seek forgiveness,
put it behind you and sin no more. Or
at least try to sin a little less.
A reminder to everyone that the
tomb of Jesus is empty. Easter is still
with us. Keep pushing for a SEAT
BELT LAW for the children.
See you in church.

Support letters
needed
To the editor,
This letter was sent to all the par
entsguardians of students at River
side Indian School in Anadarko, OK.
To all of the people who have
students at Riverside Indian School,
the following information is given to
you in hopes you will support efforts
to fight for our survival.
There is a move to close all of the
Off-Reservation Boarding Schools.
The move is headed by special inter
est groups who did not see fit to have
a representative from Oklahoma at
theu meeting.
Our belief is that there has been
and still is a tremendous need for
ours school. The young people, who
come to these schools often do not
have opportunities anywhere else.
We are asking the following, if
you feel comfortable in doing it:
1. Write a letter of support
2. Allow us to copy your letter and
mail to appropriate politicians and
educators. Thank you in advance for
your support.

Thanks Simnasho
To the editor,
I would like to take this time to
thank the Simnasho community for
your votes and to all the people for
your expressions of support, your
kind and loving thoughts and your
empowering encouragement in my
campaign for a position on Tribal
Council.
This has been a positive learning
experience. It was a short time for
those of us who were nominated un
expectedly, to campaign. For me, it
prompted thoughts as to who am I?
What do I believe in? Where is this
tribe headed and what is my vision
while on Tribal Council? These were
a few, amongst other pressing ques
tions. Most of all, it has deepened my
spirituality, by stepping out of my
comfort zone into higher expecta
tions, as I spent more time in prayers
asking for His guidance.
Thank you cousin Sacredheart
(Willard) Suppah, for having enough
confidence and belief in me to make
the nomination. With this experi
ence behind me, it has widened my
scope to things I' ve never seen. It has
made me more aware of the future
for this tribe (for us). And to have
better focus or to be more goal ori
ented of what's to be accomplished
by the daily things we do in the
community today.
Sincerely,
Evaline Patt
