"Make Nutrition Come Alive It's All About You!" by Sara Thomas, MS, RD, LD, IHS Nutrition Department 553-2458 Do you have trouble digesting milk? We all know that milk is a good, source of calcium, but for some ol us, milk is also a good source ol indigestion. The most common cause of this is lactose intolerance. How ever, don' t diagnose yourself, let your doctor decide. What you think is lac tose intolerance could be something else. What is "Lactose Intolerance"? Lactose Intolerance is when the poor digestion of lactose results in symptoms such as diarrhea, bloat ing, cramping, gas and discomfort. Lactose is the natural sugar found in milk. Lactose is two sugars bonded together. Lactose must be broken apart in order to be absorbed into the body. The enzyme lactase is the "scis sors" your body uses to cut the lac tose in two. People with lactose in tolerance have trouble digesting milk because their bodies have less lac tase "scissors". Low lactase levels are very com mon; 70-percent of the people in the world and 70-percent to 90-percent cvi khhhm for vou like vou were for us. There's not enough room to let you know the many ways you are appreciated. Milk Myth: I should avoid milk if I'm worried about high blood pres sure. Truth: Getting enough calcium may actually help reduce high blood pressure, not increase it. High blood pressure affects about one in four people and can increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Calcium may be especially helpful for flood pressure in people with diabetes and obesity, especially if weight is stored mostly in the stomach area. Milk Myth: Fat free skim milk has less calcium and other nutrients than whole milk. Truth: Fat free skim and one percent lowfat milk provide the same nutrients as whole milk, but with little or no fat, and fewer calories. A glass of whole milk contains 300 mg calcium; a glass of skim milk con tains 302 mg calcium.
