With determination the Buff's over came that situation to defeat the Bowmen on their home floor.. Than it was off to Gladstone for their second game in the play off's the Buffaloes came along to dethrone the Gladiators for a piece of the state play-offs. They say all road trips are tough games but that didn't seem to bother the Buffs, as they claimed a spot in the state tournament. The next step is to play the LaSalle Falcons to see who will be the top seed from the Tri-Valley league. The big show down between the LaSalle Falcons and the Madras White Buffaloes. The game was a burner right from the start as both teams were all up for this contest and wanted the assurance of the No. 1, spot from the league. Many fans thought that the LaSalle Falcons would sort of go through the motions to wrap up but the Buffaloes had other ideas in mind as they were going for that No. 1, spot as well as they made their presence known that they were there to play basketball. They controlled the opening tip and gave the Falcons every kind of problem there was to give from the word go. The Buffs played the Falcons on even terms through the first quarter as they were tied at 15 apiece, and the Buffs even led at the half time 29-25, which was surprising to many who were on hand. Things looked a little dim for the Buffs when the second half started where it looked like the Falcons woke up and they went on a scoring binge where they out scored the Buffs 25 10, in the third period to make the score 50-39 for the Falcons. B ut the game is not over until the final buzzer sounds and that's the whole story where the Madras White Buffaloes came back fighting all the way to out score LaSalle 23-11 in the final period, and when the final buzzer sounded the Buffs came out on top by one point 62-61 and that was the ball game. The Buffaloes minus Brian Miller who became ill and could not make the trip and along with three of the main players of the team who fouled out, that of Kyle Wyatt, Jerold Rico, and Peter Johnson, but the Buffs kept their Cool playing the game right along with the Falcons and eventually came out the winner and the No. 1, seed from the Tri-Valley league The Buffaloes enter the state tournament against the St. Helens Lyons, Tuesday March 17, at 1:30 p.m., while the LaSalle Falcons face the Henley Hornets Wednesday the 18th, at 7:00 p.m. Madras (62): Jerold Rico 15, T.J. A typical play-off game between the Gladstone Gladiators and the Madras White Buffaloes that went right down the wire until the final quarter when Madras exploded and forged ahead and never looked back1 as they beat Gladstone 58-45, to earn a ticket to the state play-offs which gets underway March 17,at the Chiles Center, on the Portland University campus. The team that won this game was the team that thought it could win and wanted to win the game as it was action packed all the way until the closing moments of the game when Madras made a run at the Gladiators with a couple of three pointers to get them going. Just recently the Gladstone team beat the Buffaloes by two points which came on a last second shot to give them the two point margin as the buzzer sounded, the final score was 52-50, in their favor. The game on Saturday night March 7, was close all the way where Madras led at the end of the first quarter by the score of 9-8. Going into the final quarter the Buffs were trailing 36-32, and Gladstone was making a little move on the Buffs and appeared to be getting out of hand when the Buffs called a time out to regroup. Later in the period Brian Miller with his cool hand swished the nets for a couple of three pointers to get the Buffs going and they over took the Gladiators and once they got the lead they never let it go and went on to post the 58 , 45 win.' A big win for the Buffs as they traveled to Sherwood to meet the Bowmen in their gym on their first road trip where the Buffs handed the highly rated Sherwood team the loss. The big underdog White buffaloes got the jump on the Sherwood Bowmen and kept them at bay all evening long putting on some tough defense and beating them to a lot of rebounds and making steals for quick lay-ups. The Buffaloes had to face the highly rated Jeff Auxie, who exploded for 45 points for the game, Auxie the 6-foot-3 senior who was voted Tri-Valley player of the year and he showed he was just that during the game, but the Buffs kept their momentum a going to hold off the highly rated Sherwood Bowmen team as they won their first game on the tough road toward the state tournament. Madras (74): Jerold Rico had the hot hand during the game scoring 25 points, to top all scoring for the night. The Buffaloes used their quickness to get inside and score on the bigger Sherwood team. It was a big win over the sixth ranked team in the state polls. Brian Miller was another barrel for the Buffs as he added 12 points for the winning Buff team, Miller always has a hand with the three pointers and they add up in a game. Cordes also went on a little scoring rampage pouring in a total of 7 points for the game, Johnson added 4 and Mora 4. A big win for the Madras girls basketball team as they toppled the Valley Catholic girls 54-49, to gain a trip to state play-offs at the Chiles Center, on the University of Portland campus.. Deece Suppah turned in just an excellent game for the night both on defense and offense. She was the leading scorer for the night with 15 points and played a big role on defense causing turn over constantly throughout the game and had several key rebounds. Any time the ball came down Deece was near or had a hand on the ball. Deece Suppah, the Un-Sung hero all season long keeping the Buffs in tourney contention. Her play all season was nothing but superb making things happen getting the ball to all the girls who got all the credit in every game.. She made several steals, blocked shots and put pressure to the ball handlers causing turn-over s in every game. Valley Catholic was a Iod contender but the Buff girls were ready for them and all played a great game. The Buff girls led at the end of the first quarter 10-8. In the game the girls were never in serious trouble at any time as all the girls w ere right on the ball and when the intermission rolled around the Buff Gals led by the score if 27-17. In the second half the Valley Catholic girls came out with fire and made a game effort to overtake the Buffs, but the Madras girls were also in the game for all the marbles and were not to be denied victory over the visitors, but the VC girls out scored the Buff gals 12-11. The Valley Catholic girls were determined to try to get back as in the final quarter they out scored Madras 20-1, but the Buff girls already had this game all sewed up and a shot at state. Madras Buffs rip The Dalles Indians 70-55 The Dalles Indians came to town March 27, 1998, on a Buffalo hunt, but the Madras White Buffaloes were ready and waiting to take them on. In the opening minutes of the game the Indians jumped out to a 6-0, lead due to some costly turn-over's by the Buffs, must have been the early game jitters. This was a must win for the Buffs to keep in contention for a play off spot for the Tri-Valley spot in the state tourney. After a bit they were able to get them selves settled down and started playing ball. Once they were on their way they out played The Dalles Indians the rest of the game. Jason Cordes seemed to get the scoring underway with a couple of quick baskets, and once they got on track it w as all a Buff shoe and out scored the Indians Zo-10, at the end of the first quarter. The Buffs were determined to get this win and played a good game and at the half time intermission the score was 34-25.
