Tribal voters approve senior
citizen assisted living center
Tribal voters, on Wednesday,
March 4, approved the proposed Se
nior Citizen Assisted Living Center.
Of the 717 ballots cast, 645 were yes,
69 were no and three were spoiled.
TTie approved referendum authorizes
the expenditure of $3 million in self
determination funds for the $4. 1 mil
lion facility.
The Center will be built near the
Senior Citizen Center. The plans for
the 40,800-square-foot building in
clude 10 units for short-term stays
and convalescence, 12 one-bedroom
units and 18 two-bedroom units. The

The Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs Indian Reservation of Or
egon will hold a public hearing to
provide the public an opportunity to
understand, review and comment on
the water quality standards devel
oped by the Tribe in accordance with
Section 5 1 8 of the Clean Water Act,
Amendments of 1987.

1998 at 4 to 10 p.m.

THE PURPOSE: 1) to assure the
public has an opportunity to under
stand the Tribes water quality stan
dards program and the Tribes pro
posed action.
2) to foster a spirit of openness
and trust among the Tribe, EPA, State
of Oregon, local governments, re
gional agencies and the public.

elders in their daily living needs,
such as tiousing, meals, transporta
tion, day care and medical support.
Other services will include conva
lescence, kidney dialysis and hos
pice care.
Construction of the Center is ex
pected to be completed by early next
year.
509-J budget to
be discussed
A school district 509-J budgeting
workshop will be held tonight, Thurs
day, March 12 at 7 p.m. at 445 SE
Buff Street in Madras. The public is
invited to learn about the budget gath
ering process and budget document.

rangement. Budget committee delib
erations will begin March 16.
On Monday, March 16, at 7:30
p.m., Jefferson County School Dis
trict 509-J will hold the first public
Budget Committee meeting for the
purpose of receiving the Budget
Message and Proposed Budget Docu
ment for fiscal year 1998-99. The
meeting will be held in rooms 12-A
and 12-B At Madras High School.
The public is welcome and encour
aged to attend. Copies of the pro
posed document will be available at
the meeting.

Districts nominate Council
March 2, 3 and 5 were busy
nights in Warm Springs.
Tribal members gathered at
their respective longhouses to
nominate Tribal Council
candidates.
The Seekseequa District
members met March 2 for
nominations. Nominated
were Lee Tom, Theron
Johnson, Joe Moses, Brenda
Scott, Delford Johnson, Myra
Johnson and Jazzy Wewa.
Scott was not present for the
nominations, but Chief
Vernon Henry accepted the
nomination. Scott has not
indicated what she plans to
do.
On Tuesday, March 3, the
Agency District members
met. Nominated were Zane
Jackson, Jeff Sanders, Sr.,
Daisy Ike, Mark Jackson,
Garland Brunoe, Norma
Smith, George Clements, Sr.,
Nathan Jim, Ramona
Tanewasha and Bernice
Mitchell. Tanewasha accepted
her nomination by letter, but
