If The Madras White Buffalos girls' varsity team beat Sherwood Lady Bowmen 60-27 and improved to 3-2 in Tri-Valley league play. TaraLee Suppah had a game high 19 points, also pulled down eight rebounds and Deece Suppah a team high nine rebounds to go with six points to lead the Lady Buffs to victory. : Madras who won the Seaside tourney over the Christmas break, looked a little rusty in the first quarter, and lead only nine to seven after one quarter. T. Suppah had four in the quarter and Mary Murphy kept the Lady Bowmen in the game with four points also. In the second quarter, Madras team defense picked up and built a 23-8 lead. T. Suppah scored seven second quarter points to help Madras extend their lead. In the third, Madras' defensive pressure allowed the Lady Bowmen only three points in the quarter while scoring 20 points of their own to take a commanding lead of 43-11 at the end of the third. Deece Suppah became a factor in the game, with three steals, dished out four assists and scored six points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, TaraLee Suppah scored eight points of the Lady Buffs' 17 points and Madras won going away 60-27. The victory , was dampend by the injury of reserve guard Melanie Smith who injured her back with 44 seconds left in the game. Smith had to be carried off on a strecher. The extent of her injuries were not known at press time. For the game, Madras out rebounded the Lady Bowmen 39-31 with Deece and TaraLee Suppah combining for 17 rebounds. Madras was lead by CeCe Polk and Reina Estimo who each had 14 points on the night. Two other Madras players scored in double figures, Blanche Mitchell and Billie Suppah pitched in 10 and 11 points respectively. In the first quarter, Madras jumped out in front 24-6 and never trailed after that. Polk scored 1 0 of the Lady Buffs' 24 points. Estimo scored six, while Amy Suppah and B illie Suppah rounded out the scoring in the first quarter with four points apiece. In the second quarter, Madras scored 24 points in the quarter to lead 48-1 0. Janell King got hot and scored eight in the quarter. Lapwai defeats Yakama to win the Warm Springs All-Indian mens basketball Holiday tournament The Nez Perce Nation team won the 39th Annual Warm Springs All Indian Mens Holiday basketball tournament, held December 31 through January 3 1998. Lapwai defeated the Yakama Nation team in Championship 124-92. Mike Leslie, Lapwai, was named MVP for the tournament. Two new Queens were crowned. Edna David, daughter of Ellison and Jonathani David Sr., was crowned Senior court queen and Daleena Frank, daughter of Jeffcry Frank and Sandra Greene-Sampson, was crowned Junior court queen. Game one, WS Blackhawks 92- Chiloquin 84 Game one, Warm Springs BlackHawks defeated Chiloquin 92 84. The BlackHawks advanced to the quarter-finals. Game two was a forfeit NorthWest Cheifs advanced. Lapwai had seven players score 10 or more points lead by Mike Leslie's 30. Lapwai held a size advantage and when the Chiefs would double down, Lapwai went outside and made the Chiefs pay by making nine three pointers for the game. Lil' Foot Ellenwood made four, Bob Sobotta had three and Dave Cunningham made two. Mike Long and Marty B. lead the Chiefs in scoring with 24 and 26 respctively. Lapwai moved into the semi-finals of the lower bracket. Game eight, Swinomish 125 Magpies 85 Game eight, host team Warm Springs Magpies faced last year's champion Swinomish. Swinomish who rode the hot shooting of Jeff Miller who scored 48 points and won 125-85. Miller recicved help from teammates Mike Wilbur and Andy Leonard who scored 2 1 and 1 9 points respectively. Jerome Davis poured in 33 for the Magpies. Swinomish advanced to the semi-finals of the lower bracket. Game Nine, Santa Clara 91 Chiloquin 76 Game nine, Chiloquin played Santa Clara with loser being out. Santa Clara defeated Chiloquin 91 76 to move into the quarter-finals of the consolation upper bracket. Mike Jonathanes got loose for 36 points for Santa Clara. Steve Wahtah scored 24 for Chiloquin. Game 10 Warm Springs Red Star by forfeit Game 12, the Magpies won by forfeit Game 13, Yakama 131-WS Blackhawks 122 in OT Game 13, Yakama played the Blackhawks in the first champship semi-final, Yakama won in overtime 131-122 the tournaments only overtime game. In the first quarter, the BlackHawks look charge behind the play of Remo Smith who 12 first q uarter poi nts to lead the B lackhawks to a 33-25 first quarter edge. At halftime the Blackhawks were ahead 63-53. Don Jonathanes kept Yakama in the game by scoring 14 second quarter points, Jonathanes recieved help from Jonathan Takes No Enemy who pitched in 10. Steve Stone and Kelly Wechter helped the Blackhawks stay on top with nine & eight points respectively. In the third quarter, Yakama out scored the Haw ks 28-1 2 and lead 8 1 -75. JoJo Mesplie lead Yakamas' come back by scoring 10 of his 16 points in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Wechter scored 1 9 of the Blackhawks 34 point as the Hawks out-scored Yakama 34-28. The game was tied at 109 at the end of regulation. In the over-time period Yakama made 16 out of 21 free throws and made three field goals enroute to a very exciting 131-122 victory. Jones and Takes No Enemy scored 31 and 38 points respectively to lead Yakama. The Blackhawks were led by Wechter and Smith who scored 34 and 29 points respectively. Yakama moved into the championship game while the Blackhawks went to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket. Game 14, Lapwai 109 Swinomish 81 Game 14, Lapwai went against Swinomish with Lapwai coming away with a 109-81 victory. In the first quarter, Lapwai lead 29 to 17 with Dave Cunningham leading the with eight first quarter points. In the second quarter, Mike Wilbur of Swinomish scored nine points to kept Swinomish close, but Mike Leslie scored eight points to kept Lapwai on top by the score of 51-42 at the half. Harold Joseph scored six points for Santa Clara. In the second quarter, Red Star outscored Santa Clara 19-11 and lead at half-time 34-33. Will Spoon Hunter lead Red Stars comeback by scoring 12 points in the quarter. In the third quarter, Santa Clara and Red Star went basket for basket and at the end of the third the score read Red Star 57, Santa Clara 56. Santa Clara advanced to the semi finals of the consolation bracket and Red Star was eliminated from the tournament. Game 16 Magpies 86-NW Chiefs 82 Game 16, the Magpies outlasted the NorthWest Chiefs 86-82. In the first quarter, the Magpies jumped out to a 16-9 lead. Jerome Davis and Gary Sampson each scored five points in the quarter for the Magpies. In the second quarter, the Magpies extended its lead to 19 points and lead 46 to 27 at half-time. Sampson scored 12 points in the quarter and made two of his four three pointers. In the third, the Magpies maintained thier lead and were ahead 66-50 going into the final frame. In the fourth, the Chiefs made a comeback lead by Larry Scott who scored 1 9 fourth quarter poi nts. Scott made three of his seven three pointers. The Magpies made 12 of 15 free throws. Davis was 10 of 1 2 from the line. The Chiefs comeback bid fell short and the Magpies held on for a 86-82 victory. For the game Sampson scored 28 and Davis 23 for the Magpies. Game 17, Santa Clara 96 Swinomish 83 Game 17, Santa Clara and Swinomish played in the first semi final of the loser's bracket. In the first quarter, Joe Hutt of Santa Clara scored eight first-quarter points to lead 24-20. Tandy Wilbur matched Hutts eight points with eight of his own. In the second quarter, Swinomish out-scored Santa Clara, but Santa Clara still went into half-time with a 49-46 lead. Bob Attle-Berry scored eight points in the quarter for Santa Clara, he made two, three-point goals. Tandy Wilbur and Randell Cook scored eight points apiece to keep Swinomish close. The Blackhawks made 12, three-pointers, Kelly Wechter made six, while James Scott and Remo Smith had three apiece. In the first quarter, Wechter, who made three treys, helped the Hawks build a 32-18 lead at the end of the first. Jerome Davis had 10 points in the first quarter for the Magpies.
