Madras defenders watch a unidenfied Sisters player gets ready to
won
The Astoria Fisherman showed
why they are ranked 1 in class 3 A,
in defeating Henley 60-53 on Friday
night and defeated Sisters in the
championship game to win the Bob
McKenzie boys 'memorial basket ball
tournament held at Madras High
school December 5 & 6.
In the first game Astoria defeated
Henley 60-53 to move into the
Championship game.
In the second game Sisters beat
the host White Buffs by the score of
79-60. The first quarter, .of.. play,
Madras played right with Sisters at
the end of the first the scoreboard
read Madras 21, Sisters 20.
In the second quarter Madras got
off to a slow start and Sisters scored
the first five points of the quarter, to
take a lead of 25-23. Sisters ne,ver
trailed again. The score at half-time
was Sisters 41 Madras 32.
In the third qaurter Madias could
not buy a basket and Sisters started to
use its size advantage with Jon Justin
6'3", Walter Gager 6'6" and Kle
Corce 65" doing most of the damage.
At the end of the third Madras was
down 42-63. Madras might have been
down by more if reserve sophmore
guard Jorge Mora didn't have six
quick points on three steals.
In the fourth quarter Sisters ran
November Fitness Challenge won by
Indian Head Casineo
Results of the 1997 November
Fitness Challenge.
The overall winners for the highest
point total in minutes of exersize
went to the team from Indian Head
Casino. ......
The point average and Second
place overall went to the Warm
Springs Fire and Safety team.
The Early Child Education Pod-A
excrsized their way to third place and
Pod-E earned Fourth place.

Madras next played the Henley
Hornets in the Third place game,
with the Buffs edging out thee
Hornets 72-68.
In the first quarter, Madras great
. play from TJ Moschetti who, had a
team high 1 8 points. Madras Idad 21
19 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the game
seesawed back and forth with the
Buffs holding onto a four point lead
at half time 36-32.
The game remained the same
through out the third with Madras
still leading 53-48 at the endof the
third.
In the fourth qaurter Jason Cordes
scored Madras's last seven points to
help the Buffs hold off Henley 72
68. The Hornets looked like they
were going to steal a victory away
from the Buffs. The Buffs Cordes
had different ideas scored a three
pointer, a two point lay-in and added
two free throws to preserve the win
for Madras.

For the game Madras connected
on seven treys with Moschetti hitting
two and Cordcs had three.
Tim Frost, a 6'9" senior, lead the
Hornets with 20 points.
The championship pitted the top
ranked Astoria Fishermen and the
Outlaws from Sisters.
Sisters started out strong and lead
16-13 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, Astoria used
the inside play of 6'9" senior Austin
Houghtaling and took the lead 37-33
at halftime. .,
' ' In the third quarter, the Fishermen
built its lead to 55-44 going into the
final frame.
The Outlaws rode the hot shooting
of Matt Everson, who made eight
treys on the night, to close the gap to
with in four points. But the Fishermen
would not bend and won 72-68.
Houghtaling lead all scorers with
26 points and recieved help from
teammate Justin Kalar who pitched
in 14 for the winners.
Sisters was lead by Everson who
had 24, eight treys, and Jon Justin
added 18.

Basketball Tournament is set for December 31
to January 1. At the Warm Springs Community
Wellness Center.
Madras Buffs lose 1st
League game, fall to 1 -3
The Madras boy's varsity
basketball team opened its 1997-98
Tri-Valley league play with a loss to
the Gladstone Gladiators. This was a
match up of two of the top four teams
from last year. The final score was
77-62.
In the first Madras trailed right
from the start with Gladstone taking
command with its height advantage,
four of the starting five over 6'0" and
the tallest being senior Brian Newton
6'5". Madras trailed 1 6-1 9 at the end
of the first. Peter Johnson scored
nine of his team high 20 points, to
keep Madras close.
In the second quarter, the
Gladiators started to pull away and
lead 37-28 with 46 seconds to in the
half. Madras score five points and
was down 33-37 at half-time and
looked like they might have some
momentum going into the second
half. In the third quarter, Madras used
the strong play of Jason Cordcs and
JV holds off Gladstone for a 51-44 win
The Madras JV boys team took
control early and lead the whole game
to beat Gladstone 51-44.
Madras was ahead 1 3-9 at the end
of the first. The Buffs rode the
shooting touch of Sophomore Alex
Hillerwhohadagamehigh 13 points
and six in the first'half.
In the second quarter Madras lead
grew to 11 points at 27-18 at half
time.
In the third, Madras maintained
its 1 1 point edge and were ahead 38
27 going into the final frame.
In the fourth, the Gladiators made
OSAA passes
Madras High school has a new
rule that states that if a player or
coach is ejected by an official. The
athletic director of the school of the
ejected player or coach and the
commissioner of of ficials shall notify
the OSAA by fax of the ejection by
the next work day. Ejected coaches
must leave the contest immediately
and shall not be allowed further
contact with the team members for
the duration of that contest. It shall
be the responsibility of the school to
disallow the ejected player or coach
from participating in the next

Gerald Rico who helped Madras to
pull within one point at 47-48 with
six minutes left in the third. Madras
was held without a field goal and the
Gladiators went on a eight and 0 run
to lead 56-47 at the end of the third.
In the fourth, Newton got some
assitance from teammate Casey
Pilcggi, a 6"2" Sr, who scored eight
second half points to help the
Gladiators build a 62-52 lead with
five minutes left in the game.
Gladstone kept the pressure on and
was ahead 72-62 with 1 :34 left in the
game. Madras did not score after that
and lost their first league game. The
final score read Madras 62, Gladstone
77.
For the game Johnson had 20
points, Cordcs had 14 and Rico
pitched in 15 for Madras.
Newton scored a game high 22
and Pileggi had 12 for Gladstone.
Madras next game will be at
Portland Christian December 20, then
will travel to Seaside Tournament
December 29-31.

basketball team won its first Tri
Valley league game against
Wilsonville December 9, at the Buff
Dome. The score was 47-42. Madras
record now stands at 3-1.
The game started out slow with
the score at the end of the first quarter
being 9-1 1 infavor of the Wildcats of
Wilsonville.
In the second quarter, Madras out
scored Wilsonville 13 to six to take a
22-17 lead at half-time.
In the third quarter, Katie
Christensen scored four points to give
Madras a 28-25 lead with three
minutes to play in the third. Madras
went on a nine point run to make the
score 37-27 at the end of the third.
In the fourth Madras looked like it
might put the game away, but
Madras Lady Buffs takes Burns tournament
fhe Madras Lady Buffaloes girls'
varsity basketball team won the Burns
Invitational basketball tournament,
December 5 and 6, at Burns High
School. Joining Madras was host
Burns, Nyssa and Bonanza.
In their first game the Lady Buffs
dismantled the Nyssa Bulldogs and
won going away by the score of 76
26. In the first quarter, Madras out
scored the Bulldogs 22-6 and never
looked back.
The Buffs lead at half time 39-14.
In the second half the Buffs
defense held the Bulldogs to 12
second-half points while scoring 37
points.
Madras had five players in double
Figures in scoring lead by Kea Wyatt
and TaraLee Suppah'sl3 points
apiece. Deece Suppah and Marie
Kalama added 10 points apiece with
Heather Klos pitching inl I points.

overtime,
improve to 3-

The Madras freshman boys team
won its first Tri-Valley league game
with a thrilling overtime 75-65
victory over the Gladstone Gladiators
and improved to 3-1 overall. Madras
rode the hot shooting of Chasen
Walker who had a game high 29
points.
In the first, Madras looked to be
nervous and trailed 14-21 at the end
of the first quarter.
In the second, Madras picked-up
its defense and out-scored the
Gladiators 19-1 4 to take a 33-3 1 half
time lead. Leading the charge were
Walker and Tony Green.
In the third quarter, Madras build
its lead up to 49-43 going into the
fourth.
In the fourth, Gladstone brought
some defensive intensity and got back 1
into the game. Madras was holding
onto a four point lead with a minute
left in the game. When the Gladiators
scored the game final four points of
regulation to tie the score at 63 apiece.
In the over-time Madras went on
a 10 to two run and won a thrilling
game 75-65.
Madras was lead by Walker's 29
points. Aaron Greene had 14 points
and Tony Green pitched in 2 1 points.
The Madras freshman tema roster:

within 48 hours of the ejection to set
aside the next game suspension of
the penalty. The Executive Director
shall refuse to hear appeals of the
judgment of an official. If the
Executive Director hears and denies
an appeal, that denial may be appealed
to the Executive Board, which shall
hear the appeal at its earliest
convenience and issue a final ruling.
Implementation of the next game
suspension may be postponed during
the time that an appeal is pending.

Wilsonville had other ideas. Jenafer :
Draney, a 5' 11" senior, scored eight
fourth quarter points to help the
Wildcats to close the gap and tie the
game at 38-38 with four minutes
remaining in the game. Madras got
great defense from Deece Suppah ,
who had two steals in the last two
minutes and clutch shooting from
TaraLee Suppah who had three points
in the fourth. Heather Klos had four
points in the quarter her last two
secured the game for the Buffs. The
final score was Madras 47,
Wilsonville 42.
Madras lost at The Dalles 52-47
on December 12, and played
Gladstone on December 16,
Information on the games was
unavailable at press time.
Madras next game will be Portland
Christian at Madras December 19.
The Buffs played Burns in the
championship game who got by
Bonanza 67-37 for the right to play
the Buffs.
In the first quarter, Madras lead
14-13.
In the second quarter both teams
played evenly and score at end of the
first half the score read 29-28 Madras.
In the third Madras defense
stepped up a notch and held the
Highlanders to five points while they
scored 20 third quarter points to lead
48-33 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter the teams
played evenly with Madras scoring
14 to Burns 13 and Madras won 63
46. Madras was lead by Taralee
Suppah and Deece Suppah who had
1 8 & 1 2 points respectively. Heather
Duff added 1 1 points for the winners.
