This report is to update you on what's been happening! In early October, staff were involved with the YOUTH SUMMIT for the Oregon Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking. There were about 70-80 youth from Central Oregon involved in the summit. CHET staff assisted as facilitators during the youth breakout groups. The YOUTH SUMMIT gave youth an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns on underage drinking issues. One of the groups from Warm Springs continues to meet and work on areas identified during the conference. This group is currently called Navtive Youth Against Underage Drinking. The youth are currently meeting every Elementary School news have been: 4 Hewlett Packard color printers for classrooms; Big screen for movie projection in the gym; 200 padded folding chairs for the gym; Megaphone; 4-alamt fire truck for the playground. Winter Carnival The annual WSE Winter Carnival is scheduled on December 1 1 th, from 6-8:30 p.m. Once again there will be activities in the gym and several rooms in other parts of the school P.O. Thursday evening from 6pm to 8pm at the Vern Jackson Home on campus. Anyone wishing to become involved is invited to attend the group meetings. The youth are working to develop a plan that will support non alcoholic activities, and also address concerns the see within the community regarding underage drinking laws. CHET involved in County tobacco prevention program In November 1997 people in Oregon voted to increase the tax on tobacco products and to dedicate 1 0 of the revenue to tobacco prevention and education. This has lead to many programs within the State of Oregon working to address tobacco prevention and building. We will be having a cake walk, so any donated baked goods can be brought to the school office any time during the week of the carnival. There will be a snack bar, so you can come grab a hot dog! Proceeds from the carnival will be used to help build an all-weather track and purchase books for the Book Store. Projects aim at community involvement education. One of these places is Jefferson County. CHET will be involved with the Jefferson County Tobacco Coalition. Jeff.Co has identified the following areas they plan to address: reduce youth access to tobacco products ; Increase tobacco free environments f children & families; reduce advertising promotion of tobacco products. The Jefferson County Tobacco Coalition has been working on a vision statement, and development of objectives. Very active on this is the Coordinator, Kaline Vaughn, of Madras. Look for future updates on this coalition in future issues of Spilyay, and other info, about tobacco concerns. Several activities were planned in conjunction with our November Family Conference, which was held on Oct 31 and Nov 1. One of the activities, which ended up being canceled was the REZ REMOTE RACE! The race was rained out, again! Kids: this gives you more time to prepare for the next one! Maybe ask Santa for a remote control car for Christmas!! In October, a Halloween decoration making night was held to bring families together for a night of activity at the Community Center. Children and parents came out to make monster heads, and began scenery for the Little Monsters Halloween Party. The party was held on October 1 6th in the Center's Social Hall. What a night! Thanks to all parents for bringing your youngsters to the party! We were overloaded with guests and had to adjust the schedule a little! There about 100 people attending the Little Monsters Halloween Party! A very special thanks to the kids that showed up in costume to attend! The Little Monster's Halloween Party was to get everyone in the mood for Halloween. Thanks to Kelly Legget for doing the face painting! You are the Greatest! Carol and Carolyn would like to recognize Tony and Lillian and crew for being there early, and for your wonderful artistic talents! When HALLOWEEN finally did happen, it was the first day of the 1997 Family Conference at Kah-Nee-Ta. We had a great turnout of approximately 160 people in attendance. CHET staff would like to acknowledge the presence of Charles "Jody" Calica, General Manager for Natural Resources, for taking time to stop in on the conference and for his comments. Thanks, Jody, for your support, it was sincerely appreciated ! It's rare that we see our leadership taking time to let us know how we aredoing! We're glad you were able to hear Cecelia Fire Thunder speak. Keynote Speaker, Cecelia Fire Thunder shared some time with us and gave people a great outlook on her version of healthy families. Cecelia is always a treasure of knowledge. Everyone enjoyed her at the conference. Cecelia's message of wellness touched many participants. Be on the look out next year for the 2nd Annual Family Conference. Taking place in October of each year is the RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN. CHET staff handed out over a thousand red ribbons to commemorate Drug Enforcement Adminstration officer, Kiki Camcrcna, and the fight agains illegal drugs entering our country. Whew!! What a busy month October was! Well, CHET staff didn't slow dow n, as we jumped right into the next project, trie 1997 Gathering of Men III. This activity took place on November 18-19, 1997 at the Kah-Nee-Ta Lodge. We had about 75 participants attending the two-day conference. Continued on page 6
