Red Wolfe Natives women's slo
pitch softball team of Warn Springs
came home with the top prize from
the 1997 N.I. A. A Men's and
Women's Slo-Pitch Nationals held
September 25-27, at Fort McDowell
Indian community near Phoenix,
Arizona. Lyle's Gals, also from
Warm Springs, won fifth piace.
There were 16 lady teams in the
two day tournament. On their way to
first place the Red Wolve Natives
defeated Red Nation of Phoenix, War
Hawks of New Mexico, and
Instigators. They next faced Dine of
Page, Arizona and lost. In their next

The Jefferson Countv Middle
School volleyball team eighth grade
team won its first match against Pilot
Butle September 23, at Pilot Butte.
The 'B' team won 15-5, 15-0 and 15
6. The 'A' team won 15-5, 15-1 and
15-7. The seventh grade 'A' team
won 15-7, 15-10, and 8-15. The 'B'
team lost 15-9, 10-15 and 5-15.
Madras played Crook County
Thursday, September 25. The JCMS
eighth grade 'A' team won 15-3, 15
7 and 7-15. The 'B' team score was
15-12, 15-4 and 11-15. Scores were
not available for the seventh grade
teams.
On Tuesday September 30,
Obsidian came to JCMS. The JCMS
eighth grade 'B' won two matches
and lost one, the scores were as
follows 15-5. 14-16 and 15-2. The
eiehth grade 'A' team won one and
lost tw o, 1 1 -1 5. 3-1 5 and 1 5-1 1 . The
seventh grade 'A' and 'B' teams
recorded two wins and had one loss.
Thursdav October 2, the JCMS
Lady Buffs'travcled to Pilot Butte to
face Pilot Buttes second teams. The
seventh and eiehth grade teams from
JCMS won alfof thier matches. The

"For A Change of
Pace" 10-K runsetfor
October 18
KahNeeTa Tall I () K run is set for
October I X. at the KahNeeTa Village
& Spa. The Warm Springs Recreation
department will be sponsoring the
KahNeeTa fall I O K run "l or A
Change of Pace" (6.2 miles) and a
two mile run.
Starting time will be I0:(K) a.m.
for both races. lintry fee is $5no T
shirt and $8with T-shirt, and $10 on
the day of the race.
I'rc-registration will be at the
Warm Springs Community Center
from 8a.m. to5 p.m. Monday through
Fridays. Deadline is Friday October
1 7. Race day registration will be from
8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the KahNeeTa
village Patio.
The age groups are as follows:
6&under, 7-12 years, 13-18 years.
1 9-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years
and 50&ovcr for both male and
female.
The course will start at the
KahNeeTa village as the 10-K
runners start out in a eastward
direction on a paved road through
rolling hills adjacent to the scenic 18
hole golf course and the trout-filled
Warm Springs river. The runners will
turn around at the 3.1 mile mark.
Runners will return to the starting
point at the village. The two mile fun
run will also start and finish at the
KahNeeTa village.
Each divisional winner will
receive awards for placing. All ,
entrants will receive a T-shirt and a
raffle ticket. Raffle items will be
donated from local merchants.

championship game. In the
championship game the Natives
defeated Dine twice to win first place.
Lyle's Gals won their first two
games and lost their last two, on their
way to winning fifth place.
The Red Wolfe Natives received
first place jackets and a trophy. Lyle' s
Gals received fifth place trophy and
T-Shirts.

won 15-9, 15-0 and 15-5. The seventh
grade 'A' team won 15-6, 15-5, and
15-9. The 'B' team won with scores
of 1 5-10, 1 5-3 and 1 5-5. Eighth grade
coach Lorinda Lowe stated "It was a
great night once the girls got over the
bus ride."

White Buffs
The Madras White Buffaloes beat
the Lstacada Rangers 45-8 on
September 26. Brian Miller past for
1 42-yards and had four touch-downs
passes. Madras also moved into (he
top ten rankings in the AP polls for
class 3A football, Madras is now
ranked ninth in the state.
Madras scored 14 points in the first
quarter, neither team scored in the
second quarter.
In the third quarter Madras
exploded for 28 points. Going into
the fourth Madras had a 42-0 lead.
The game was delayed 40 minutes
after Johnson hit a 20-yard to give
Madras a 45-0 lead. The Madras
players and coaches thought that the
45 point rule was in affect for the
game, but the refcrres said that the
game will continue. When play
resumed, in the fourth quarter,
Madras was hit with penalties for
delay of game. So the Buffs had to
kick-off from their own 10-yard yard
line. This set up the Rangers only TD
of the game a two-yard run. Estacada
added two more points to make the
score 45-8.
For the game Madras had 255
yards rushing. Keller Christensen
carried the pigskin 23 times forl47
yards. Shawn Wollin hadeightcarrics
for 93-yards and had a 62-yard TD
run. Johnson caught five passes for
107 yards with one TD catch. Miller
passed for 142-yards with four TD

Slo-Pitch Nationals
received MVP honors. June and
Juliane Smith were named to the All
Star team from Lyle's Gals. Each
All-Star received a bat bag.

Madras defense closes in on Gladstone runner
The Madras White Buffaloes
defeated the Gladstone Gladiators
35-6 on October 3, to improve it's
Tri-Valley league record to 3-0 and
"5 - 0 overall. Madras head coach Chip

his scrambling abilities."
The Gladstone Gladiators hurt
themselves with five, first-half
fumbles and Madras made them play
on three occassions. The first was
when Jarod Moses recovered a
G.ladjajprs . fumble .near mid-field,

Scambled 23 yards on a play which
loooked like he was going to be
sacked for a loss. On the next play
Miller ran a quarterback bootleg for
a 17-yard touchdown. The first
quarter ended with the scoreboard
reading Madras 7, Gladstone 0.
In the second quarter the Buffs
widened its lead to 21-0. At the start
of the second the Gladiators
' quarterback looked as if he ran for a
TD, but a clipping penalty brought

Four Professional Wild Horse
Race teams from Central Oregon are
heading to the National finals held in
Billings, Montana October 14-18.
The Jason Smith team of Warm
Springs, leads the standing going in
to this event. Team members include
Smith, Mark Tobiasson and Joe
McLean. The Spud Smith team, of
Madras, is in fourth place. Spud is
joined by brother Rodney Smith and
Ricky Lyons. The team of Edison
Yazzie, Ed Simpson and Jarrod
Horner from Prineville, are in sixth
place in the standings. The last team
from Central Oregon is Jeff Solesbee,
Jim Bailey and John Seely of.

Johnson picked up a Gladstone
fumble and ran it in from 11-yards
out. Johnson added the point after
the score to make the score 14-0. On
the ensuing kickoff Gladstone could
not handle the pigskin. Madras took
over on the Gladiators 22-yard line.
From there Keller Christensen
rambled 31 -yards to make the score
20- 0, Johnson added his third extra
point on the night making the score
21- 0 with 8:59 left in the first half.
Gladstone ran three plays then had to
punt. Madras also was unable to move
the ball and was forced to punt. Once
again Gladstone couldn't find the
handle, Madras recovered the ball on
Gladstone's 22-yard line. Two plays
later Miller made a great 2 1 -yard TD
pass to Jerold Rico to make the score
28-0, after Johnson made the extra
point. At half time the score was 28
0 infavor of the Buffs.
In the third Madras wanted to put
the game out of reach. Keller

Six boys and girls from Warm
Springs were among the winners of
the Punt, Pass and Kick contest held
September 30 & October 1, at the
Warm Springs Community Center.
The winners now advance to the
sectional finals at Tualatin Hills Park
in Portland on October 1 8, beginning
at 9 a.m.
The participants scores are taken
from three football skills, passing,
punting and kicking. The highest
score in each skill will be added
together when the contestants are
done.
The boys winners were:
Age 8-9, lst-Vaughn Prow,
Madras, won with a score of 206.
Rodney Katchia, Warm Springs, was
second with a score of 158. A score
of 156 score earned third place for
Albert Adams, Warm Springs.
Age 10-11, 1st went to Patch
Adams, Warm Springs, w ith a score
of 244. 2nd place honors went to

on the night a 12-yard TD. Johnson
added the extra point and Madras
lead 35-0. The visitors did not quit as
they drove the ball to the Buffs 4 yard
line, but the Buffs goal line defense
stop the Gladiators at the 3-yard line.
Madras ran the clock out to wend the
third quarter.
In the fourth, with game out of
reach Deloretto put most of the
starters on the bench and let his
second stringers finish the game.
Gladstone put one good drive together
and scored on a 1-yard TD run by
Rodney Cook. The games final score
was Madras 35, Gladstone 6. j
Christensen rushed for 1 3 1 yards,
recoverd two fumbles, and had two
TD's. Miller completed one pass for
21 -yards and one TD, he also rushed
for 60-yards and one TD. Johnson
had one TD and five extra points.
Madras recoved six Gladstone
fumbles. Johnson, Zarate, Cordes and
Moses recoved one. Christensen
recovered two.
Madras will travel to Portland
Christian this Thrusday October 9,
Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Simon Jim, Warm Springs, with a
score of 203. Manuel Greene, Warm
Springs, turned in a score of 164
which earned him third place.
Age 12-13, 1st place went to
Brandon Mitchell.Warm Springs,
with a score of 189. Scott
Kalama, Warm Springs, placed
second with a score of 171.
Age 14-15, Jackie Shadley,
Madras, won with a score of 303, the
highest score for the contest.
Girls winners:
Age 10-11, lst-Sasha Mitchell,
Warm Springs, with a score of 241.
Jaylcen Main, Warm Springs, placed
2nd with her score of 162. 3rd place
was won by Cyrille Mitchell, Warm
Springs, with a score of 99. Age 12
13, 1st place was won by Nicole
Main with a total score of 257.
Age 14-15, Reina Estimos' 279
earned her 1st in her age category.
