4 September 25, 1997 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: The way it is Well the Indian fighter, Sen. Slate Gorten, RWash.. has backed down on his proposal to Congress, the issues of allocating funds, and the sovereign status of Indian tribes across the country. "Is he the only Indian fighter today?" Sometimes one wonders who is lerking in the dark shadows just waiting for a chance to pounce on his prey. And I'm sure there are more out there that would like to join Sen. Gorten. Just recently Senator Wydcn, was in Madras, Oregon, for a town Hall meeting and the first matter brought up was the proposals by Sen. Slate Gorten. Makes one wonder what our neighbors in Central Oregon are thinking. There are so many things today's society don't understand and one of the most important one is the treaty of 1855, between the U.S. Governmentand the Warm Springs tribes. Most people only know that the Indians live on a reservation with out recourse. They feel the Indians live there and should remain there especially the population of today. During the signing of the treaty of 1855, the Indian leaders made some wise decisions. The Indian leaders agreed to move on to the reservations only after reserving certain rights and privileges. The most important one was that millions of acres of prime land was ceded to the government but the tribes retained the rights to hunt, fish, and gather fruits and vegetation in all accustomed places, along with the mineral and water rights. There are so many little things the general public don't understand about the American Indians. Many feel that we receive their tax money to live on, many think the government gives each tribal member a paycheck each month to live on. The pile of rocks they put the Indians on have paid some dividends. Yep! they didn't want this forbidden land where they couldn't grow anything. The timber and the natural resources have done fare for the Warm Springs Tribes Enough to where we have a little bank account. And from our natural resources we have some income and from the surplus we et a little per-capita. Just because the checks are written on government checks the general public think the government pays us money. Yep! Like I said, there are so many unseen ties which are bound by the treaty people are now trying every way to find a loop hole to break our treaties with the U. S. Government. And the Indian Fighter Sen. Slate Gorten, RWash. is one of the main leaders in that department. There must be some reason he has backed down. He must have another scheme on the drawing boards because he wouldn't back out if he didn't have something else on his mind. So we must watch every step he makes and I hope our leaders never give in on anything or promises made in the future. I feel that he is leading up to some kind of loop hole and will spring the trap when the time is right. Yep! I'm sure he is trying very hard to find that certain loop hole to break the treaty between the Indians and the U.S. Government. His interpretations of allocating funds to the Indian reservations was really miss leading to the general public, and the media published the allocations to each were paid out in per-capita, to reservation. Some tribes who have no resources are in a bad situation but the allocation was not ment that way. There are several programs that operate under these appropriations on the reservations where the funds are ate up in no time at all. Yep ! We' ve got to watch everything we have pretty close or we will be losing what we have if we don't look out. TOE In the judges chambers the judge told the opposing lawyers "I have been presented by both of you with a bribe." You Attorney Papa gave me $1 5,000, and you attorney Peters gave me $1 0,000. The Judge reached into his Robe and pulled out a check and handed it to Papa. I'm returning $5,000 and we're going to decide this case solely on its merits." YIKES SS SS After committing a daring bank robbery, the tow Not-So-Bright bandits peeled out of the Bank parking lot. The driver told his friend, look back, see if the cops are following us. How will I know? They'll have their flashers on. After looking back for a few minutes, he answered, "Yes...No...Yes...No...yes...No... WOW, I was very impressed by the teachers who talked about a more aggressive education. To get the job done and to understand why. To understand that excellence is the goal. To have our children be good communicators. And most of all, teachers who spoke of teaching children about life. Most of the teach ers offered their home phone number. To prepare for the great advantage called LIFE. Our teachers are calling our children to high levels. I ask that the community leaders of Warm Springs call us to higher levels. I am in the process of organizing a study group at night school on Tribal history and culture, fortunately our bookstore has a good stock of native books and TV documentary programs have been recorded over the past months, but we have no information on present times and future activities, so it is important that we know than half a way of life. Any help you can give will be much appreciated. There was adisplay of Hand Crafts and costumes at our local book store, on a special event week. It gave me the opportunity to meet people who are interested as I am. Best wishes to everyone. We look around us and see young people from 18 to 24 or 30 just doing noth ing with their lives but looking for the next drink or high. Us elder people are the victims to them for money or to hock something too. We're all auntie or grandma then, how sad it is to watch all that of our young people. And only to pray for their safety and cry. Love, Jeanette Meanus . Reward Offered! Lost: Trophy saddle won by late Matt Wewa. Horse got loose and showed up with no saddle on him.
