The Buffaloes rode the arm of starting quarterback Senior Brian Miller, who passed for 17I yards and one touchdown, for a 17-7 win. In the first quarter Madras's Johnson made a 26 yard field goal to put Madras ahead three to zero. After a Lapine turnover Madras scored on a ten yard pass from Miller to Peter Johnson, making the score 1 0-0 after Johnson's extra point. At the end of one quarter of play the score read Madras 10, Lapine 0. The Buffs last score was a ten yard run by Brian Miller in the closing seconds of the second quarter again Johnson added the extra point. This touchdown was set-up by a fumble recover by the Buffs defensive-end Jarcd Moses. Miller passed for 121 yards in the first half, with Johnson leading the way with 101 yards on six catches and one touchdown. Kyle Wyatt had one catch good for 20 yards. 21 had 10 yards on one catch. Keller Christensen carried the ball 15 times for 68 yards. The Buffs defense was the key in the first half holding the Hawks to 16 yards total for the half. Hawks had seven yards rushing and nine yards passing. In the start of the third quarter the Lapine Hawks looked like they were going to make a run at the Buffs when Robert Meier returned the second half kick off 95 yards to make the score 17-7 Madras. The Buffs threatend to score on their next possession when Miller connected with Johnson for a 45 yard completion, Johnson was stopped at the two yard line. Christensen rushed in the next play which looked like the Buffs were going go up by six more, but a penalty moved the Buffs back to the Hawks' 12-yard line. On the next play Miller hit Johnson in the end zone, but Johnson could not hang on to the ball. Christensen was stopped at the one-yard line and the Hawks dodged a bullet. Lapine took over on its own one-yard line. Neither team threatend to score after that. Christensen rushed for 77 yards, in the second half, to help Madras keep control of the football, Madras time of possession in the second-half was 18:48 compared to the Hawks 5:12. In the second half the Hawks Bend, boy's & girl's win team titles The Madras cross-country varsity boys and girls hosted the Madras Invitational cross-country meet there were 13 girls teams and 16 boys teams. Bend ran away with both boys and girls titles. The Bend girls placed seven runners in the top 12 places, with Abby McCallister getting the top spot with a time of 18:40:25. In the boys division Bend took 2nd through 9th places, lead by Jeremy Bloom's 2nd place. Madras girls placed 7th lead by Brooke Alexander's 19th place. Other team members were as follows: Jenny Wilcox-23rd, Leila Woll-26th, Laurie Riley-9 1 st, Nette Rankin-99. Team places were as follows: Bend-1 st with 25 team points, Crook County-2nd with 97 points, Hood River-3rd 137 points, Redmond-4th with 142, 5th-St. Helens with 177, 6th-Burns with 183 and Madras 7th with 285. Bend boys won first place with a score of 20. Second went to the team from Rainier with a score of 149. Crook County scored 175 good for 3rd place. Redmond placed 4th with a score of 1 90. St Helcns-208, Burns 213 and Wahtonka-28 1 rounded out the top seven teams. Madras was lead by Michael Manning's 1 1th place, next was Lee Zumwalt-97th, Justin Miller placed 140. The next runner for Madras was Craig Graham-167, David Fuentcs followed at 174 and James Johnson was the last Madras runner coming in at 179. quarterback Daniel Kerr completed six of eight passes good for 5 1 yards. The Hawks rushed for 38 yards. Madras got 77 yards from Christensen on the ground. In the air Miller was two for six good for 55 yards. Johnson had one catch for 45 yards. The final game stats were as follows: Madras passing Miller ten .. for 20, 1 7 1 yards and one TD. Madras ran the ball 38 times good for 154 . yards and one TD. Johnson caught seven passes for 146 yards and one TD. Christensen rushed 29 times for 133 yards. Shawn Jace lead the Madras defense with 1 2 tackles, four unassisted and four assisted. Madras was called for 17 penalties for 160 yards. Lapine: eight for 1 1 good for $6j t yards passing. Lapine was limited to"" 44 yards rushing. Lapine had six'' -; penalties for 45 yards. A Madras varsity volleyball team share title with Sisters The Madras White Buffaloes girls varsity volleyball team started the season off with a good showing at the Burns tournament September 6. They , tied with Sisters for the title due to, the fact that no game may start after, 7 p.m. becuase of OSAA time, restrictions. Madras then made short; work of Sherwood Tuesday, September 9, beating Sherwood 15-: 2 and 15-3. At Burns, the Buff girls first played; a pool round. In pool play they faced, Lakeview and dropped both games 3-15 and 6-15. Up next was Burns,! the girls lost the first game 1 5-1 7 and the last 10-15. Madras then came alive against Marist beating them 1 5-1 1 and 1 5-1 2. Madras was seeded 7th out of eight teams when the bracket play started. Madras first played Ontario, the Buffs won this match up 15-7 and 15-12. In the semi-finals Madras faced Marist. In the first game Marist won 11-15. Madras responed by winning the next two games 15-7 and 15-7. Madras, was to play Sisters in the title game but due to OSAA rules no game may be started after 7 p.m. Madras and Sisters were named co-champions. Coach Gail Dubisar credited the following players Jody Nartz and Anna Collins with good efforts. Nartz had 33 kills and Collins 29 kills. Servers Liz Weigand was 5 1 -54 with four aces. Katie Christensen was 4 1 -48 with eight aces. Tuesday 9, at the Buff dome Madras hosted Sherwood both teams first league game. Madras made short work of Sherwood winning 15-2 and 15-3. Madras coach Gail Dudisar stated, "We really did not get a chance to play, they had problems returning our serves." Jody Nartz had five kills, with Katie Christensen and Sherie Johnson each adding three kills apiece. Keji Wyatt had a good game serving she was 16-16 with three aces. Johnson added two aces with one a serve out game. Wyatt a setter also had 16 assists. Up next for Madras is Portland Christian September 9, at the Buff dome starting time is set for 5 p.m. Flag football to begin September 15 Attention boys and girls ages 3rd through 6th grades Flag football sign up forms will be at the Warm Springs Community Center, Warm Springs Market, Post Office, and the Administration building from now until Friday September 12. The cost will be $ 1 5 per player or $25 for two or more. Practice will start September 15, 4:30 p.m. behind the Community Center. The first game will be September 20.
