REFLECTIONS ON THE DESTRUCTION
OF WORK AT THE LANGUAGE TRAILER
July 28, 1 997
If one was to compare the feelings generated
over the vandalism that has occured at the
Langauge Program...Imagine if you were a child
who had created something that was beautiful,
took it home to share, only to have the parent
caregiver destroy it in front that child.
We, the staff of the Language Program feel simi
lar, having came to work this morning and
discovered the violation of our work, which has
become a priority in our service to the commu
nity. The vandalism that has occured will not
only affect the staff, with the many hours
they've devoted, but the community loses also.
The devastation that has occured will not be
easily replaceable, we will not be able to go out
and buy a book to replace the curriculum de
veloped for the three languages. The down time
this creates, gives less time to produce and
revive our languages in written material.
Please consider becoming more forceful, hold
ing persons accountable for their actions or the
actions of their children. It's as if the whole
community has been violated, because the ma
terials that had been developed was for the
Tribal Members.
We are very saddened over the loss of the com
puter monitors and the destroyed disks that
stored language information crucial to the
development of
materials used in
teaching the three
languages.
