From fine-crafted antique basketry
to an "Anti-Barbie" doll, the August
exhibit at the Columbia Art Gallery in
Hood River will showcase the range
of artistic expression of the region's
first people and their descendants.
"Enduring Spirit, Native Arts of
the Columbia River" opens on Friday,
August 1, and will remain in place
until August 26. The work of con
temporary Indian artists from the
Columbia Plateau as well as heirloom
beadwork and basketry from the col
lection of Arthur Erickson of Portland
will illustrate the vitality of the arts of
the indigenous peoples of this region.
Erickson, nephew of gallery board
member Marie Dean of White Salmon,
is a recognized connoisseur of fine
American Indian art.
Jewelry, masks, twined bags and
other fiber arts, paintings, prints and
drawings, intricately beaded bags and
necklaces, and fine art photography
will represent the directions contem
porary Native artists are taking age
less themes. This will be the first time
many of these artists have shown their
work in the Gorge.

The public is invited to the open
ing celebration of "Enduring Spirit,
Native Arts of the Columbia River"
on Friday evening, August 1. The
show will open promptly at 7 p.m.
with a scene-setting tale by story
teller Ken Smith and short readings
by award-winning poet Elizabeth
Woody who is of Yakama, Warm
Springs, Wasco, and Navajo descent.
There also will be basketmaking
demonstrations at the gallery on Sat
urday, August 2 from 12 to 3 p.m.
The gallery is located at 207 Sec
ond Street in Hood River; admission
to all events is free.

Stand Down for Veterans Needs Volunteers
Volunteers are needed for the
1 997 Columbia River Stand Down
event for homeless veterans,
scheduled for August 13. This
year's Stand Down is being held
for one day only at the Kliever
Armory on NE 33rd Drive in
Portland, OR. More than 446
military and veterans organizations
are planning this year's camp.
Volunteers can help before,
during and after the event, Tuesday
through Thursday. They can help
set up and tear down equipment,
serve food, help with medical
services, haircuts, counseling,
child care, security, and income
tax assistance for the more than
250 homeless veterans expected
to attend. A more extensive list of
volunteer needs and contact
information is also available.
Stand Down is a military term
that describes the process of
withdrawing troops form combat

There is now a retail shop avail
able at the Plaza at Warm Springs.
Any Tribal Member interested in
obtaining a lease for this retail shop

face similar struggles for survival
on the streets with limited food,
lack of housing, physical and
emotional disabilities,
unemployment and other issues.
This one day event is for
homeless male and female
veterans from Oregon and
Southwest Washington. Veterans
will receive hot meals, health care,
legal assistance, hair cuts,
counseling for substance abuse,
post-traumatic stress disorder, and
learn about veterans benefits, tax
and employment services.
Transportation will be
provided from Portland, Salem,
and Vancouver. Parking is
available on site. Tri-Met bus 1 0
stops directly across from the
Armory on NE 33rd Avenue.
Donations of clean clothing for
men, especially denims, are
needed. Clothing can be put in
bags marked "Stand Down".

Ernest E. "Geno" Lillie II,
"Khznee", age 53 years passed away :
June 17 at his residence in Wapato,
Washington. Mr. Lillie was born
October 13, 1943 to parents Ernest
E. Lillie and Bessie McKinley in
Warm Springs, Oregon. He was an
enrolled member of the Confeder
ated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Lillie married Lucille Albert
Yallup Lillie March 10, 1979 and
made ; Wapato, Washington his
home. Geno worked for the Yakama
Nation for many years until his
medical problems began. He en
joyed the outdoors, the mountains,
huckleberry picking, root digging
and being around his family.' He
was always active with yardwork
and mechanics. He also enjoyed
attending the Longhouse for Washat
services along with the Shaker
Church. He was always willing to
prepare his sweathouse for his fam
ily and friends. He loved his pets
Cuddles and Smokey.
Preceding in death are his par
ents, daughter Melissa Lillie and
uncle Ernest Sconawah of Warm
Springs.
Surviving are his wife Lucille,
sons Ernest E. Lillie III & Michael
A. Polk of Wapato, Dixon Polk of
Warm Springs; daughters Tina a
Trena T. Lillie of Wapato, brothers
Theodore "Monty" McKinley, Ivan
McKinley, Deimar Geary and
Dempsey Polk, Jr. of Warm Springs,

Rhonda Clements, age 28, passed
away July 19, 1997. Ms. Clements
was born February 24, 1969 to par
ents Sandra (Gilbert) Clements and .
Donnie Holliday at Madras, Or
egon. She was later adopted by
Grant Clements, Sr.
Clements attended schools at
Warm Springs Elementary, Madras
Jr. High, and Ft. Apache, AZ.
She was known as a h?rd worker,
always helping others and loved to
grow plants.
Survivors include daughters,
Cassandra, Kaylyn and Clarissa
Wolfe, parents Sandra & Grant
Clements, Sr., long time compan
ion Conrad Queahpama, sisters
Helen Clements, & Annette
(Holliday) Polk; brothers Stacy
