Veterans groups from far and near Local Veterans meeting held A Veterans meeting held May 27, 1997, in the local VFW hall in regards to the Comprehensive plan. The future of all veterans here is a important subject. There should be some kind of recognition to all those who served their country in time of hostel conditions through out the world.. I. ..11.1 .4,twt ot.wI. i-athered to honor all those who made the Ultimate sacrifice during war time. The parade was headed by a U. S. Marine Corp. Color Guard, followed by the local V. F. W. and the American Legion groups both men and women. Among the visiting groups was the Northwest Indian Veterans Association (NIVA), which is based in the PortlandVancouver area, headed by Jack Quinsy, who works with the Veterans Affairs there. The NIVA Color Guard consisted of Dan Foster, a Klamath Falls Indian who is a army veteran retired, served in the Korean and Vietnam era., the next was Dave Smith, Navajo, served in the Vietnam War and received the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a door gunner on Helicopters. The other was Jack Quinsy, Chippawa, from Minnesota, served in the Vietnam war. Cheslcy Yahtin a member of the specifically spelled out for all veterans. However the group still needs Veterans participation in addressing the needs of the veterans here in Warm Springs. There are several areas that need action and with those who were in attendance felt there should be more on hand. At the last meeting there were almost a hand full of Veterans there. There is a call for veterans to attend the meeting ATNI Pass Reso, For Vets Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) The ATNI at their 1997, winter conference held in Portland, Oregon, passed one resolution relating to American Indian Veterans. The Resolution had to do with VA home loans to American Indian Veterans on Trust Indian Lands. Until 1992, American Indian Veterans could not receive a VA home loan on Indian reservations because not lending company or band would stand good fro a loan to American Indian Veterans for loans on Attention Tribal Fishers Increase your salmon sales! Smith was born on August 21, 1946 to Selma (Wicki) & Harold Smith, Sr. in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Smith was born and raised in the Southwest area and came to Warm Springs in 1958. He was an en rolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He was employed as a welder for Warm Springs Forest Products. In his spare time, he enjoyed all types of sports, attending powwows and big drum singing. He also liked to travel, along with spending time coaching Pop Warner football in tflmi'AM ?oti nrtr Chosen Few group of the Korean j War era was among the visitors in the J Parade. Cheslcy drew phrase from , that era. There were many other visiting groups in the first time parade : in Princville, which could develop into something great in the future. ; The parade made its way through ; the city of Princville, and wound up at Ochaco Park, where on the Bridge ; the group gathered and a wreath was thrown into the stream honoring all those who served in the Navy, Marine and Coast Guard. With the gun Volley,, and Taps concluded the services there. From there the group went to the Cemetery where services were held for all who served the country. In the parade there were a group of Vietnam Veterans who carried the U.S. Flag that flew over the Embassy in Saigon, Vietnam. The parade and gathering in Princville was one of many parades that was held on Memorial day across the country. May 27, 1997 but as usual the few show up. One person remarked, "I guess everyone is Ashamed to be a Veteran." There are several issues that look real good if enough participation from the local veterans would occur. For those who attend all the meetings should be commended well for their time and efforts. The next meeting will be June 10, 1997, to evaluate what has been discussed up to now. Since 1992 American Indian Veterans could get home loans on their reservation if there was an agreement between the VA and the Indian Tribe, i.e., the tribe would insure the home loan with the VA. Banks and other lending companies still would not insure home loans for American Indian Veterans. This was fora period of five years, thus, the VA home loan for American Indian Veterans will end September 30, 1997, unless extended by Congress. Warm Springs.
