Program

JUST AN UPDATE.
Periodically we would like to take this time to
update the community about the things the Lan
guage Program is in the process of doing and what
they are involved with. But first of all we want to
take the opportunity to welcome two new team
members, Rosalind Johnson, and Dana Smith. They
are working with the language program through the
JTPA program. They have been assisting with the
SpilyayKWSO lessons and doing a very good job.
Program staff; Myra Shawaway, Val Aguilar,
Suzie Slockish, Alice Harman, Arlita Rhoan, Dallas
Winishut, Wendell Jim, and Rosalind Johnson had
the opportunity to attend "Stabilizing Indigenous
Language Symposium", through the Charter School
Grant. It was held at Northern Arizona University,
Flagstaff, AZ.
The symposium brought together many im
portant leaders in stabilizing and maintaining our
Native Languages. Participants had the opportunity
to learn what's new and working for other tribes as
they attempt to either revive or maintain their Own
languages. There were workshops on 'Total Immer
sion', 'Total Physical Response', 'Political Issues',
'Indian Languages in the Schools', 'Teacher Certifi
cation', and many other important issues we face
today with our languages. We are also proud of the
fact that Arlita (and the elders she represented
from the Warm Springs Tribe) were honored for
their hard work in Language Restoration and Devel
opment The Charter School Project is still in the
works, with the Language Program Staff working to
developing materials for the upcoming school year
to begin teaching the language at the Kindergarten
level. We hope to spend most of the summer pre
paring for this big adventure. The Charter School
monies will be sending two people to the American
Indian Language Development Institute at Tucson,
Arizona to work on Wasco curriculum development.
This is one of the better and more intense training
that the staff has attended for their own develop
ment. Please stayed tuned to this area of the paper
for more updates on where we arc with the lan
guage program. And some time in the future plan
for yourself and your family to become involved
with some part of the language program. We en
courage the community to have input and sugges
tions as to what they would like to see done. En
courage yourself and others to learn, don't discourage!!!
