The Indian Warrior, The Veterans Corner Public Hearing for Minority Veterans A public hearini; for minority Veterans was held on May 20, 1997, at the Portland VA Medical Center. Auditorium, in Building 101, second floor. The Theme was, "II You don't Speak, We Can't Hear." One of the most concerns was Communication, between their staff and the Veterans outside. They said they never knew of the meeting and learned about it by accident. There was nothing in the news papers or radio or TV. The meeting was presided by the Congress Appointed advisory committee on Minority Affairs. The needs of minority veterans in such areas as compensation, health care, rehabilitation, outreach, and other VA administered benefits and programs, in a report to be submitted to Secretary Brown, with recommendations for improvements. This report along with Secretary Brown's response will be presented to Congress. There were several testimonies by Veterans that were present, and most were about the services they have received in the past, which was not good reports, One stated they gave him an appointment for 9:00 a.m,., and when he arrived there were many, many more with appointments for 9:00 a, in. and the waiting began. Hopef ully with the new facilities things will change, but communication still stands out for the Veteran who needs helpandcan't seem to find it when it is necessary. Among those who were present from Warm Springs were Llton Greeley and Charlotte Herkshan. . m kfwMMMi liSr. a'- Hydrologist needed Hydrologist needed for Natural Resources. Collect hydrological data. Lola Sohappy Chief Judge, Warm Springs Tribal Court There was a tour set up for the local Veterans of the new Veterans Administration Hospital in Portland, Oregon, on May 16, 1997. The time was set for 10:30 a.m. The Bus left Warm Springs early Friday morning with just a few Veterans making the trip. The tour was set up mostly for the minority Veterans group. Mainly the Native American Veterans who are located in the rural areas of the reservations across the country and usually are overlooked on things like this. There is a great effort from personnel who are trying to close the gap and bring in the Indian Veterans as well as all the other Veterans who have served their country in the armed forces. A new modern facility that replaced the old VA hospital, near the University of Oregon Medical Hospital in Portland. The new facility serves the Veterans in about every capacity from Health care, Education, and Research. Just about what ever the Veterans need in today's world. The Patients have a panoramic view of the city and the whole countryside including the Cascade Mountain range. A person can look to the north and see the Mt. St Helens, to the east Mt. Hood stands bright and clear. The tour was set up by DeBorah Williams who is the Director, Minority Veterans program. She explained that the facilities were there for all Veterans. Discussion included service from the Pharmacy which is available for the Veterans. Once established there are some cases where prescriptions can be processed with out much waiting like in the past. Mr. Elton Greeley arranged for the Senior Citizen Bus to transport the Veterans who made the very worth while trip to see the new facility. While there those who were present were able to register with the VA Hospital and received identification cards for use as needed for services in the future.
