This is the month when
citizens across the country will
set aside daily tasks to
commemorate all the fallen
veterans. A day dedicated to all
veterans who gave their lives to
preserve our freedom.
Many communities will have
bands and parades, the twenty
one gun solute and other
activities as they take great pride
to honor the veterans on this
occasion for they put their lives
on the line to protect our country,
especially those who gave their
lives fighting to protect what
we have in this country today,
"Freedom".
Right from the battles of Bunker hill at the birth of our nation
to the trenches in France; to the landing on the tropical islands of
Guadalcanal, Philippine Islands to the top of Mt. Suribachi, Iwo
Jima; from the desert of No. Africa and up through Italy, from the
beaches of Normandy into Germany; From the big siege at
Changjin Reservoir, in northern Korea to Pork Chop Hill,
I leartbreak Ridge, the Inchon Landing. The first troops landing
at Cam Ranh Bay, to DaNang, Saigon, the Battle of Khe Sanh,
Quang Tri, Plaiku, Bein Hoa; to the Desert Storm and all the small
skirmishes we have been in, the Veterans were willing to put their
lives on the line. No matter where the action took place on all eolp hw nwnfr

Hello from Pastor Rick. A lot of coach or gang members exposed the

Why HcHc Longhousc? Why? Why?
Why ? And the big question is why do
the kids act this way? How docs a
single child with all the smarts and
love a child can have join other chil
dren to become something that can
hurt people and the community?
To mc the answer is not just
parenting and drugs. Those do play a
major role in the life of a child. To me
the answer is in the character of a
child. What is character? From
Webster's Dictionary-thc complex
of mental and ethical traits marking a
person or a group-moral
excellence... We all have character
but what shape is it in? Joe Pctcrno of
Pcnn. State Univ. said that football
or for that matter any sport does not
build character but exposes the char
acter that is in a person. Long ago the
character of people was challenged,
exercised and put into great shape.
They were called the debate team,
speech class, writing class, art work,
dance, music, language. These arc
the areas of education and the com
munity where the character of the
children is shaped and nurtured. It

character of a young adult that per
son could act as a human being and
not as an animal. No, not an animal,
animals have character too. So what
do we do?
First off a reminder that the facts
of life is that good children with
good character can still do dumb
things. But with good character in
the lives of our children we stand a
much better chance of seeing growth
instead of destruction. Stop protect
ing your children from every pos
sible event that might bring them
some discomfort in their lives. Push
your child with a lot of live to do
other things in their lives. If your
child is having a hard time at school
do not thing that it is (he teacher's
Eroblcm of not understanding. It may
e your child. Remember not under
standing something is why we have
schools. Learn new things with your
child. And talk to your children, talk
lo your children, talk to your chil
dren. Finally, Spirituality is the great
est of all exercises of character. It
speaks to the very heart of who we
are in this world, the character of a
loving God becomes your character
for life.
See you in church.

To the editor,
To the parents; I am concerned
parent about the JCMS. I have ques
tions about certain issues, that maybe
someone could hclpanswer. The sub
ject: 'DISCIPLINARYMISCON
DUCT ACTIONS'
One subject is the Parent Notifi
cation. Are we, the parent notified
BEFORE your child is taken out of
class room, for each incident that
may occur? Does the school staff
follow this procedure each time? Or
are you notified after your child is
already pulled out of the class? Does
the school staff also inform you if
they decide on ISS for the child?
Second subject: Who designed and
approved the ISS ROOM? And is the
purpose of this solely for disciplin
ary actions? Was it the people of the
community who voted on it or who?
Also what staff decides on the dura
tion period for each child? Is it the
teacher, vice-principal, person in
charge of the room? And how do
they expect the child to maintain and
upkeep their homework? And also,

battle fields everyone knew there was that chance they might not
return. This is the one thing all veterans have faced, if a bullet had
his name on or not.
In May this special day, Memorial day, is set aside to honor all
the veterans across the country. As you pass all the cemetery's
you can see all the small American Flags blowing in the breeze,
along with fresh flowers.
There were two days set aside to honor the veterans and they
are in May and in November. The day in November was first
known as Armistice day, and after time passed and so many wars
the title changed to Veterans Day. Now we have another Armistice
day and that day is July 27, to commemorate the ending of the
Korean War, in 1953. The Korean war is known as the forgotten
war until a couple of years ago when President Clinton signed into
law that July 27 was set aside as the Korean Armistice day.
Here in Warm Springs, the people take pride on memorial day
to observe everyone of their family members who have passed on.
A day when everyone goes to the cemetary and cleans the graves
and decorates them with fresh flowers. The Fathers, Mothers,
Brothers, sisters and everyone of the relatives are remembered.
Here, some of us call it, "Decoration Day". We all go to the
cemetery and sometimes tell stories of those who have passed on.
Usually they are comical stories that we always remember which
brightens the day as we visit the graves. We remember things we
should have done with them while they were still alive.
There is one thing I regret and that was to pay more attention to
all the stories they told about the reservation, the two tribes who
settled here in Warm Springs in the beginning, and how they fore
saw many things that are at hand at the present time. For years and
years after the signing of the treaty of 1855, there were just two
recognized tribes that lived here on the reservation, the two river
tribes that were moved out here from the Columbia River. Stories
of what it was like in the early days of life on the reservation and
being sent to the boarding school. Yes, there were so many stories
that was told of the transformation from a fisherman to try to learn
to farm for a living, or to learn a different kind of skill or trade in
order to get along in the world in them days. It wasn't until the
twentieth century that the Indians became citizens of the United
States, and even up to the World War I, the Indian men were really
not required to go into the service but many volenteered to fight
for the country. And so after the first world war the Indian people
recognized Memorial day as a day set aside to remember all those
of their family members
Today I hear a lot of stories from supposedly historians and
many things were not mentioned in all the stories told by the Old Happy 1st Anniversary to my Sweet Pea 143.
i nners.
Them days were not as easy as the stories are told today. Well,
like this article is on Memorial day, when we all refresh our
memories of those who have passed on... Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon!!!
BEING HEARD, and if placed in
ISS why isn't just for that class pe
riod? How come it has to be half day
all day-times, how many days? Is
this suppose to help them with their
actions or what? Sound proof, no
talking, just sit.
My opinion: When I walk thru,
seeing the Indian children in the ISS
ROOM, first thing that comes to mind
is "The beginning of reservations."
IS OUR CHILDREN REACHING
OUT FOR US! Calling for us. We as
parents have got to help them! How
can they survive and cope with the
future? Not only survive, but becom
ing and making the best person they
can. And is this ISS there way of
discipline? I feel sad and hurt when I
walk by. And feel like this is some
kind of abuse. EMOTIONAL
ABUSE! Ourchildren need our help,
they can't handle life, if life can't get
started.
Any response, I would really like
to hear.
Thank you for your time.

To the editor,
I have been involved in a never

found something I would like to share
with my family as well as other fami

that bind your true family together
are not always those of blood, but of
joy and respect of one another."
