Eagle Spirits 6'
The Eagle Spirits 6' and Under
Men's basketball tournament was a
"good success" according to tourney
director Ricky Minlhorn. "We had
teams from Washington, California,
Idaho and Oregon. It was good to see
the talent from all overlndian country
to come play."
The Lapwai team won first place,
Pendleton went home with second
place and Yakama took third place.
Host team Eagle Spirits placed fourth.
Following is a game-by-game
account:
Game one pitted Pendleton against
Granger. The Pendleton team had
eight players score in double figures,
with Rcmo Smith pouring in 2 1 points
for the winners. Granger was lead by
Forrest Elie's 22 points.
Yakama Bucks played NW Chiefs
with Yakama coming out on top by
the score of 97-69. The games top
scorer was Donnie Bagley, NW
Chief's, and for the winners was JoJo
Mesplie with 22.
The third game had Yakama going
against host Eagle Spirits. The Spirits
used the inside play of Shawn Shaw
who scored 27 points to lead the
Spirits to victory. Rick Price scored
18 for Yakama.
In a high scoring affair, game four,
Lapwai out ran the Wapato team by
the score of 1 05-93. Lapwai had five
players with 17 or more points, with
Bob Sabotta hitting 28. Glenn Jones
had 22 for Wapato.
Game five the Scouts played Eagle
Spirits. The Spirits ran away by the
score of 102-38.
Game six pitted Seattle against
Pendleton, with Pendleton winning
by the count of 69-62. Rcmo Smith
scored 21 for the winners.
Game seven Yakama defeated
Sutherlin 95-61. John Takes No
Enemy had 24 for Yakama. Derek
Kimbol scored 22 for the losers.
Hoopa came up short in game
eight aeainst Lapwai in the next game
losing 88-82. Wayne Nezhad31 for
the losers, but Bob Sabotta poured in
34 and Jason Yurock added 25 points
for Lapwai.
Game nine had NW Chiefs
defeating Seattle by the score of 60
59. Seattle lead at half-time 40-28. In
the second half the Chiefs came and
out scored the Seattle team 32-19.
Kanim Smith poured in 32 for Seattle,
while Donnie Bagley scored 16 for
the winners.

For the Mens Long Drive, Pal Kelly
won a $50 Savings Bond from U.S.
Bank of Madras. Janell Smith won
the ladies KP 1, Bill Endicotl won

Bears in the next game, 10, with
Southerlin winning by the score of
73-63.
Hoopa played Granger in game
1 1 . Hoopa came away with an 8 1 -43
victory. Wayne Nez, Hoopa, scored
a game high 25.
In game 12 Glenn Jones scored 36
to lead Wapato to victory over the
Scouts of Warm Springs. The final
score read Wapato 113, Scouts 52.
Game 13, first quarter-final game,
Pendleton defeated Eagle Spirits 80
70, lead by James Scott's 27 and
Remo Smith's 21. The Spirits were
lead by Shawn Shaw's 19 points.
Yakama Bucks and Lapwai played
the next quarter-final game, G-14,
with Lapwai winning by the score of
85-74. Bob Sabotta had 27 points to
lead four other players in double
figures for Lapwai. Jon lead Yakama
with a game high 27.
The N W Chiefs and Hoopa played
in Sundays first match-up game-15,
with NW Chiefs putting out Hoopa
51-40. Lester scored 20 to lead the
Chiefs in scoring.
Game 1 6 pitted Southerlin against
Wapato, with Sutherlin winning 76
68. Game 17 had Pendleton and
Lapwai playing for the right to move
onto the championship game. Lapwai
won the hard fought game by the
score of 91-88. Bob Sabotta poured
in 36 for the winners and getting help
with four other players scoring 1 2 or
more points. James Scott got loose
for 26 for Pendleton.
Yakama and NW Chiefs played
game 18. Yakama edged out the
Chiefs 68-61. Jon and Alex each
scored 16 points apiece for the
winners.
Game 19 had host Eagle Spirits
running away from Wapato by the
score of 78-95. Jaime Henry lead a
balanced attack with 32 points for
the Spirits. Glenn Jones scored 26
for Wapato.
In the fourth place game Yakama
defeated Eagle Spirit 79-70. Doug
scored a game high 26 and Jon added
21 for the Yakama Bucks. Jake
Suppah and Shawn Shaw had 23 &
1 8 respectfully for Eagle Spirits. By
winning Yakama moved to the third
place game and Eagle Spirits received
fourth place.
The third place game had Yakama
and Pendleton playing. Pendleton

7 1 -66. At half time the score was 35
42 in favor of Pendleton. Remo Smith
poured in 23 first half points, making
six trey's. Smith finished with a game
high 33. Yakama placed third while
Pendleton moved to the
championship game. In order for the
Pendleton to win championship they
must beat Lapwai twice.
In the championship game Lapwai
faced Pendleton, the winner of the
back door bracket. Lapwai used the
shooting of Bob Sabotta and John
Yurock who had 24 & 21 points
respectfully, to win 85-70. James'
Scott scored 24 for the second place
Pendleton.
Warm Springs wins ladies 8-ball division
In Redmond, Oregon on April 24,
the long exciting Redmond Pool
League season ended. Twelve of
Central Oregon's best teams
participated in the event. The
competition was fierce even though
these Warm Springs gals lead
throughout the season the
championship was a nailbiter as it
came down to the wire and the last
game of the season.
Three evenly matched top teams
vied for the title. After the suspenseful
smoke cleared the Warm Springs gals
representing Redmond American
Legion 1 stool alone, on top.
They played their hearts out almost
flawlessly under pressure and
prevailed as undisputed pool
champions of the Central Oregon
High Desert area. While dethroning
the former champs, 2nd place City
Slickers 1 and 3rd place VFW 2
(Lillian Smith team).
This American Legionl Sobriety
Team was originally formed by (arm
injury) Rita "Patches" Marchand and
featured team members: MVP,
Selena Boise, "Rookie of the Year"
Seegray, Peggy "Metolius Kid"
McKinnis, Captain, Jeri Smith, Betty
"Boop" Bagley and sixth man Mi-Mi
"Hot Shot" Hairy bull.
Congratulations champs. Great
job. The team was happy to see good
sportsmanship throughout the season.
May 3 Reservation Relay results given
ThclOlh Annual Reservation Relay,
was May 3, 1997, at the KahNecTa
Resort 14 teams participated this year.
Fouryouthleanis, l ive co-ed adult teams
and five udult male teams participated.
All the youth teams were locals,
Willamette Valley Stridors brought many
adult teams and local udult teams made
up the rest of teams, plus one Bend team.
Coming in first for the adult male,
also overall winner, was Willamette
Valley Slriders-The Faults, from Salem
finishing the 58 mile course in six hours:
14 minutes: seven seconds. Team
members we as follows-Gabriel Ccja,
captain, Jesus Ccja, Jose Moreno,
Salvador Garcia, and Paul Gazea.
Second adult male, 3rd overall, went
to the team of "Semi-Mixed" of While
Salmon, with a time of 6hr, 37min and

captain Alex Mortcnsen, Shcrm Rouse,
Julius Robertson, Kristen Frost and
Brandon Ohncmus.
Taking third in the adult male class
was Willamette Valley Siriders-Leg 1
Wannebee's, Salem, with a time of
7. 1 4:00. Team members were as follows
captain Eric Olson, Mick Evans, Todd
Wilson, Eddie Franz and Joe Dang.
Willamette Valley Striders-"See Ya
There...", Salem, finished the course in
7.17:18 good enough for fourth place in
the adult male class. Captain Kevin Pelky
was joined by Rich Torassa, Greg
Burgess, Jeff Bcmrosc and Brent Pelky.
"Reservation Road Kill "turned in
a time of 7.43:03, good enough for Fifth
place adult male, Bend. Team captain
Chad Brindlc, Douglas Dean, Michael
Collar and Doug Williams.
First co-ed adults, second overall,
was "Bagel Burners", from Willamette
Valley Slriders, Salem. Turning a time
of 6.27:56. Team members were as
Baseball skills
Diamond skills competition will
be held on Saturday May 10, at the
Warm Springs Community Center
starting time is 3 p.m. and at the
Madras High School at 12 p.m.
The contestants are judged on
three different skills, throwing
accuracy, running timed from second
and hitting off a tee for distance.
The age groups are 7-8, 9-10, 11
12 and 13-14, for both boy's and
girls. The winners will move on to
Sectionals TBA at a later date.
Regionals will be at a Seattle
Mariners game and the finals at the
1997 All-Star game.
You may pick-up entry forms at
the Community Center, Warm
Springs Market and at Housing.
