Works selected for this category must
be available for sale.
Following are the Tribal Member
Art Show guidelines:
1. Applicant must be 18 years of
age or older and must be a member of
the Confederated Tribes of Warm
Snrings.
2. Applicant must submit no more
than five pieces of art. Applicant
may submit slides or photographs of
their work. The slides must be num
bered and labeled with name, title,
media and dimensions. If slides or
photos are not available, the work
may be brought to The Museum.
3. All entries must be no more
than five years old and have not been
exhibited in any other shows at The
Museum At Warm Springs.
4. Submitted works must remain
in the show for the duration (May 9th
through June 29, 1997).
5. After the jurying, artists will be
notified which of their pieces have
been selected and when to bring them
to The Museum.

The Jefferson County Veterans
Service Office has moved to the
Madras Senior Center, located at 680
SWMadison, in Madras. Office hours
are Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. and
Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
While I'm in the office, the phone
number is 475-5228. Other than of
fice hours, call 475-2449, the
Jefferson County Commissioners
Secretary, to leave a message or
schedule an appointment.
At the present time, appointments
are helpful for the Veterans' ability
to be assisted when their time is
limited. Walk-ins are usually able to
be helped upon arrival. Occasionally,
there can be a short waiting period,
while others are being assisted.
To clarify a couple of definitions.
Veteran, in general terms, is anyone
who has completed 90 days or Basic
Boot training in the military forces of
the United State of America and re
ceived some type of separation from
the military organization. Military

Memorial Wall sections, when

approximately five feel high at its
vertex.

Legion Post No. 29 and Auxiliary
and the Sons of American Legion

Memorial Day Committee arc proud

Stress Disorder, Agent Orange
Syndrome, and chemical sensitivity
relating to Persian Gulf service.
Through a nationwide network of
coordinated hospitals, a unique
population of patients and a uniform
database, the VA health system
provides an outstanding opportunity
to conduct large-scale, multi-center
organizations also include the US
Coast Guard. It you completed less
than 90 days, you may still be
qualified as a veteran.
The term veteran, for this County
Veterans Service Office and many of
the benefits, include the veteran,
spouse, surviving spouse, chldren and
heirs. Parents, grandchildren and
grandparents should also feel free to
explore areas of question or interest
concerning their veteran.
Under certain circumstances and
conditions, veterans eligible for
benefits include Merchant Marines,
personnel of several other civilian
organizations and service personnel
of forces that arewere allies of US
forces curing declared conflicts, wars
or times of crisis.
The last item, Carl Whaley, MS,
team leader from the Salem Vet
Center, comes to Madras and Warm
Springs to provide counseling for

passed away March 2, 1997 at Ma
dras, Oregon, sne was y i yeais. wu.
Mrs. Johnson was born April 26,
1905 on the Grand Konae inuiau
Reservation to John Warren &
Cecile Leno. She lived in Grand
Ronde with her family before relo
cating to the Warm Springs Reser
vation in 1930, where she resided
until her passing. Pauline attended
crhnnl in thp. f!rand Ronde area.
She later married the late Reverend
Orin Johnson and helped pastor the
Full Gospel Church for many years.
This marriage lasiea over uu yens,
ending qnly when Reverend John
son passed away in July 1989.
Pauline started a missionary oui
renrh in which she would travel to
all the western states and Canada.
She was very well known, bvery
where she went, she was known as
"Grandma" by all. Some nevereven
knew her real name.
Besides being a Reverend, Mrs.
Johnson was a homemaker, raising
one daughter, Cordelia Kneeland
of Dalles, Oregon, 4 adopted grand
children, extending into caring for
great-grandchildren. During the
Second World War she was a certi
fied welder at Swan Island. Follow
ing the shipyard duty, the family
returned to Warm Springs. In her
earlier years she lived on a farm and
helped out with whatever needed to
be done raising horses and cattle.
She was a very good horse rider,
riding everyday to check on the
livestock and fencing. Mr. and Mrs.
Johnson moved to the Agency area

The Madras Senior Center is lo
cated just south of the Catholic
Church on Madison, on the west side
of the street. Easiest direction from
4th or 5th streets (the one-way streets
through Madras) are: Go west on "J"
Street (at Prince's or Taco Time),
continue past 3rd, 2nd and 1st, then
the next intersection is Madison. The
Catholic Church is on the S W corner.
Turn left (south), go past the church
and the open field. The next building
on the right is the Senior Center. This
is a beautiful new county building
with plenty of parking.
