The 1 1 th Annual Jefferson County
Sports & Recreation Show will be
held April 1 1 , 1 2, & 1 3 at the Jefferson
County Fairgrounds, in Madras, Or
egon. This show has grown to be the
most popular show ot its type in our
area. The show includes all aspects
of sports and recreation, as well as
having some entertaining events,
such as a Dutch Oven Cook-Off, a
large Carnival, Kid's Free Fishing
Pond, an Elk Bugling Contest, an
Odds n' Ends Sports Auction, the
famous Reptile Collections that
OMSI has exhibited in the past, Rich
Steber, Author and Narrator of sto
ries of the west, a Soccer Game Con
test, and demonstrations by the sev
eral Search & Rescue organizations
in the Central Oregon area, plus
many, many more things to do.

Loyal fan immortalizes Elvis
Skilled beadworker, Dorothy
"Pebbles" George has turned
Elvis Presley into an art form. An
Elvis Presley fan since childhood,
George made a handsome beaded
purse with Elvis Presley's face.
From start to finish it took her
nine months to complete the bag.
George learned to beadwork
as a child. She started with
necklaces-stringing beads then
she started to make other kinds of
necklaces until she began making
other items. Her fine work is sold
in local art & crafts shops or by
special order.

Bryant, came across an Elvis
Presley picture in a waiting room
magazine. He said, "Pebbles
would love this. She's an Elvis
Presley fan." He tore the picture
out and brought it to her.
George said, 1 his is a round
picture, what am I going to do
with this Sam?" She then decided
to make it into a purse and came
up with ideas for the other side.
Her daughter Johnnie liked her
idea to make a purse and she
bought her the cut beads to start
the beadwork of the Elvis Presley
purse. She matched the beads to
the picture she received from
Ernie.
One side is Elvis singing into a
microphone with a record album
background. One side has the
ICB-Taking Care of Business
emblem on the top, he had this
OTiPicm on his euitar, the name
Elvis across the middle and a
teddy bear, for the song, at the
bottom; all on a vellow

"Springs Clean Up" month
The Housing department's work group, with the assistance of tribal
sanitarian Nancy Collins, has taken the initiative to designate the entire
month of April as the time for the annual "Springs Clean Up" for our
tenants.
April 1 to 4 "Garbage Bounty Week"
We have set a goal of 1,000 bags of garbage to be picked up in
the month of April. The Housing department will provide five
garbage bags (free of charge) to individuals for picking up
garbage along side our units or along the roadside. If all goes
well and wc find the financial support, we will then pay a bounty
for each bag of garbage collected. We will do our best at keeping
track of who collected the most garbage and at the end of the
month have a grand prize for the most active individual or group.
April 7 to 1 1 Large ApplianceFurniture pickup and disposal
If people have large items (washer, dryers, couches, etc.) that
they are tired of looking at and would like removed, we will do
our best at getting to your home and take the unwanted items to
the dump.
April 14 to 18 Tree Limb removal and "Garbage Bounty Week"
The Housing department will be concentrating on West Hills,
Tcnino Apartments, Campus units and the Senior Citizen
units for removal of dead and down tree limbs. We have asked
for assistance from the Fire Management Staff and we are
awaiting their response. Because of the large amount of limbs,
we may try piling and burning of these limbs to reduce our
workload and make our goal easier to achieve.
April 21 to 25 Abandoned Car Roundup and Crushing
The Housing department will be continuing the Abandoned Car
removal project. The Warm Springs Police Department will be
assisting the Housing staff by placing stickers on those cars
deemed "abandoned". If individuals have a car that they would
like removed, contact the Housing department. All cars removed
will be at no cost to the owner.
April 30 "Springs Clean Up" Picnic
The staff is planning a picnic for this day to celebrate our
victory. At this time, awards (donated by local merchants) will
be given to the individuals or groups who have taken the most
active role in the "Springs Clean Up" project. The picnic will be
held at the Housing office.
The Housing staff is committed to making a strong effort in
carrying out the "Action Part" of our plan. If you are interested in
volunteering, would like to sponsor a prizemake a donation or have
different ideas that would help us, please contact the Housing
department at 553-3250.

Water Board announces public meeting
The Water Board has announced a public meeting will be held
at the Agency Longhouse on Thursday evening, April 3.
Community members are invited to attend and share their
comments with the committees that will.be present.
The Water Board, Land Use Planning Committee and the
Range and Ag Committee are working with the Water and Soil
department and Planning department gathering information
that will assist Tribal Council in developing a flood ordinance.
The flood ordinance will not allow houses, commercial build
ings or industrial buildings in the flood plane.
Your input is requested. The meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m.,

each end of the strap she has the
year he was bom and the year he
died.
The inside of the purse has
cotton fabric with Elvis Presley
images.
When she heard that Elvis
impersonator Dave Moore was
going to perform at Indian Head
Casino last year, George decided
to" get moving on the project. She
worked diligently and completed
as much as she could before

finished his performance she
showed him the unfinished
purse and he said, "Wow, would
Graceland like to see that!" She
told him she would like to show
Graceland.
George had front row seating
at Moore 's performance. He sang
her favorite song, "Suspicious
Minds," and she cried after he
put the handkerchief around her
neck.
George will enter her purse in
the Tribal Member Art Show in
the changing exhibits gallery at
The Museum At Warm Springs,
May 9 to June 29.
