E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
Can you imagine two Ice q 0
Rain storms in one month? Well
it happened here causing haz
ardous driving conditions for
local motorists, and causing
school to cancel classes in the
509-J school district. Some high
school athletic activities have
been put on hold and re-scheduled
for another date.
Yep! Never saw this much
freezing rain in one season
around here. The freezing rain
followed a heavy snow storm
over the last week-end where
several inches of snow was
dumped covering the whole
countryside. Now can you
imagine what might follow? Maybe a little flooding. Well lets
hope it don't flood because we've already had our feet wet once
this year.
Not only did the motorists have difficulty getting around, it
was equally as bad for those afoot. Several spills by individuals
on the slick icy surface on the sidewalks and pathways. Yep!
we've all had our ups and downs slipping down. I've had my
share of spills from the slick sidewalks. Yep! I really hit hard on
my North end when I was going south.. I decided to look for
chains for my shoes, fortunately I was lucky and found some at
the Western Auto Store in madras. A pair of cleats that I buckle
on my shoes, so now I can walk on any icy surface with out
having to worry of slipping down.. Some of those spills I took
hurt pretty bad, worst than being bucked off a bronc.
Well we still have a couple of months of Winter yet to go so
this might just be a start. So be extra careful while out in this
weather and I hope you don't bounce on your North Side.
Tournament receives good response
(icipanis could play in mcir own age
To the editor,
We received good response to fill
a 10 team bracket. Neah Bay pulled
out due to a funeral and Bthele, Wyo
ming got snowed in. Host team was
the Olc Oregon Travelers, Burns
Warriors, Yakima Chieftains, Satus
Cowboys, Pendleton Wildhorse,
Muckleshoot Casino, Sprague River
Ducks, Nespelem Tribe and Indian
Pride from Salem, OR were still able
to make it. Our hats off to all the
teams making this tournament pos
sible. We were commended on the
tournament and the awards and hope
to make this an annual 40-Ovcr tour
nament. Our special appreciation goes out
to all our sponsors for this one time,
worthwhile event. Also to all those
who assisted in the tournament, mak
ing it a success, along with the refer
ees, and to Chas Mitchell, Jason
Smith, Carlos Northrup who stayed
behind and assisted clean up. Next
year we decided to have Olc Oregon
Travelers 40-Ovcr. It will start on
Thursday, Friday, Finals to be on
Saturday afternoon with a one night
powwow for participants and who
ever gets interested. Giving Sunday
as a traveling day for the teams. We
were commended forgiving the tour
nament that powwow surroundings.
We're the first to do so in sometime.
A special comment was made by
one of our elder committee mem
bers, Mr. Tom Begay. On how great
it was to see all these teams playing
40-Over and keeping themselves in
great condition. Because most tour
naments are for young men and kids.
That he was glad to put this memo
rial 40-Over Tourney on. So the par-
group. Hven though some still play
against the younger generation yet
and is in favor or making this an
annual event. A chance for every
body to get together each year, slack
ing up memories.
I'd like to say thanks a lot to my
nephews, the F.agle Thunder Drum
Group for showing up: Carlos Calica,
Greg Arquette, Otis Johnson, Gary
S witler, Chips Kalama and Curt Jim.
They sang first an Honor song for all
our sponsors, participants, commit
tee, Jcri Eaglestaff, Luana Macy,
Veterans, ciders, tribe, referees, and
our precious resource, our children.
Their next son was to honor the
wives, girlfriends, etc. for their great
support during our activities. Some
having to get permission to attend
our activities from them. While we
as the committee were going over the
tournament results, Eagle Thunder
kept the people occupied with some
intertribal. Satus Cowboys chipped
in some pop money for the drum, so
did the committee, in appreciation of
these good songs and lime. After the

After Mr. Tom Begay sang a song in

safe New Year and trip home.
I made a comment to the younger
people, "knowing who you are, what
your are, and where you come from,
Indian Identity, along with the Cre
ator in their lives, is 13 of their
success towards their future." Being
Indian first and proud of it. That they
must start now preparing for their
futures. For whether they believe it

Prep basketball in the state is on the down ward trend toward
the finals in each district before all the play-offs start, and the
winners on to State. This year the 3-A class basketball tourna
ment will be held in the Chiles Center at the University of
Portland, in March.
As each week passes by all sports minded folks have their eye
on the weekly rating polls. Just recently the Madras White
Buffaloes were rated No. 4, and they worked their way up to No.
2, behind Douglas. Douglas was upset and lost a game and that
put the Buffaloes in the No 1 , spot in the state. And for two weeks
now the Buffaloes have been rumbling over the state as the No.
1, team, as voted by the AP polls.
The Madras White Buffaloes earned their right to the No. 1,
spot with convincing wins over The Dalles Indians by the score
of 83-60, and rolling past the Gladstone Glasiators 81-58, to
receive the No. 1, spot for the second week in a row now.
What does the No. 1 , ranking do for a team? Well for sure all
the schools will be looking for that big chance to knock off the
No, 1, team in the state.
Yep! After hanging around long enough the White Buffaloes
finally made it to the top in the weekly ratings. Being No. 1 , can
have its effects on a team. It puts pressure on the boys to hold that
position each week, and all the school will be looking for that big
chance to down the No. 1, team in the state.
Not every school has that chance to become the most voted for
team in the state, which is a great honor for the players and the
towns people and parents are proud of their team. "Good Luck"
for the rest of the season Buffaloes!!

Reminder to love those who love you
their wedding. They heard the words
"in sickness and in health" and started
To the editor,
Hello from Pastor Rick, how about
a devotion....
A well dressed couple and beauti
ful flowers. Marshall and Stephanie
promised their love to each other for
life. Guests released helium balloons
when the couple left the church. It
was a wonderful wedding.
But just hours after the decora
tions were gone, the groom came
down with the flu. In the middle of
the night Stephanie went to find medi
cation for Marshall. She stayed up all
night caring for him. When Marshall
felt better, they watched a video of
laughing. "I didn't realize how soon
I'd be tested on that promise," said
Stephanie. "Maybe what happened
to us is a better picture of a good
marriage than any wedding picture
feeling what the other one feels, tak
ing care of each other no matter what. "
Just as Stephanie shared in Marshall's
sickness, Gos is so close to his people
that he hurts when they hurt. Look
up Isaiah 63:7-9. This was a reminder
to love those who love you....
See you in church.

Forgiveness asked
To the editor,
My dear relatives, I feel this is the
right time to say what I feel to my
people. I have gave my life to God
and one day everyone will give their
life to God. 1 John 1:9.
For my people who believe in
Jesus Christ birth, and why he was
born. Jesus is.the real reason for
giving thanks.
I have asked God in 1 John 1:9,
forgive me, now I ask everyone that
I hurt in anyway to forgive me for all
my wrongs.
I believe in God, through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Now a warning, Messiah is com
ing sooner than you think. My people
it is time to wake up, we are in the
Revelation's of Jesus Matthew Chap
ter 24, Mark Chapter 1 3, Luke Chap
ter 21.
I'm praying for all. I love you all.
