K "11 I I 1 J ' .'V.V ?! ljlfl tourney WE BAA AD. to host 12 & under ' "1 V: Jr; ft ft Taralee Suppah makes two freethrows during a game against Panthers The Madras Lady Buffs took fourth place at the Redmond Holiday Classic. Which included Madras, the host team Redmond, Burns, Sisters, Cottage Grove, McKay and North Bend. Madras lost the first game to Redmond 34-57, despite Taralee Suppahs 2 1 point outburst. The Buffs played even basketball through the first quarter of play, tied at eight. The second and third periods hurt the Lady Buffs by being outscored 35-11. Redmond Panthers took control of the game and won the game by 13. The second game Madras played Sisters and won going away 67-34. The first quarter the Lady Buffs came out hot scoring 26 points to the Outlaws' eight points. Madras' lead at half was 36-22. In the second half, Madras scored 31 points to the Outlaws 12, to take the win by the score of 67-34. Katie Christenscn scored 1 1 and Suppah had nine to lead the Buffs in scoring. Everyone scored for the Lady Buffs in the game. Coach John Peterson stated, "We had an advantage in scoring off turnovers." Madras played McKay in their last game, winning by a score of 44 32. Madras opened the first quarter fast and outscored McKay 16-4. Madras never gave up the lead they built in the first quarter and won the game by 12 points. "Our defense clogged up the middle and we rebounded very well, with everyone contributing something to make this a total team effort," stated coach Peterson. The Lady Buffs will travel to Valley Catholic on January 7, to resume league play. LaSalle Defeats Lady Buffs 51-36 The Lady Buffs hosted the LaSalle Falcons on Friday 20. Madras gave the LaSalle team a big lead in the first quarter and could not overcome the 13-3 lead that the Falcons had. Madras coach John Peterson stated, "It is a hard lose to swallow. We did a fine job in getting back into the game, but we expelled to much energy getting there." The loss dropped the Lady Buffs record to 3 2 in league play and 4-2 overall. The Lady Buffs outscored t' LaSalle team 27-12 in the second and third quarters to take a 30-25 lead going into the final frame, but were outscored 21 to 1 1 in the fourth quarter. LaSalle's Rosebrook was eight for eight at the free throw line during the fourth Quarter. Rosebrook had 1 8 on the night to lead all scorers. Madras was lead by Gregg's 13 points. Suppah had ten points, while Hawes pitched in eight. Travelers to host 40 & over The Oregon Travelers are set to host the first annual Jim "Dugan" Macy and Bob Eaglestaff men's 40 & over basketball tournament on January 1 7-1 9, at the Warm Springs Community Center. Entry fee is 250$ payable to Oregon Travelers Tourney, P.O. Box 1255, Warm Springs Ore, 97761. Youth suicide prevention girls 12 & under tourney will be January 10-12, at the Warm Springs Community Center. The entry fee is $ 1 25 and is due as soon as possible. Second place will get hooded sweatshirts, ihira will receive crew-neck sweatshirts and fourth will receive t-shirts. 12 All Stars will be selected. Also a Miss Hustle and an M.V.P. Madras boys lose first league game The Madras boys traveled to LaSalle on Friday 20, and lost their first game in the Tri-Valley dropping their record to 2-1 in Tri-Valley and 5-1 overall. It was a match up of the two top teams expected to play for the Tri-Valley League title. LaSalle won a close game 53-50. Coach Evan Brown stated, "We didn't play with the composure a championship team needs to win a close game as this one was." Madras lead after one quarter the B uffs held on to a slim lead of 1 4-1 3 . Early in the first, the Buffs were,' ahead 12-6 but the Falcons stormed back to close the gap to 1 4-1 3 . In the second the Falcons outscored the Buffs 14-9 to lead Madras 27-23, which prove to be the turning point of the game because they played even basketball the rest of the way. In the third Madras scored 13 to LaSalle's 14 and the in fourth both teams scored 14 point's. Madras had a chance to win the game but a costly turn over gave the ball back to the Falcons. Then the Buffs were forced to foul. The Falcons made both free throws to secure the win. Coach Evan Brown stated "We were disappointed that we did not leave here with a win, but to play badly and still have a chance to win is a good sign." Riddle and Kirsch lead the way with 13 points apeice. LaSalle's George lead all scorers with 2 1 points. i - I ..' fv - " v'v " - "'"""j Monty Larson teaches children to pass the ball to their teammates. Children stretch their leg muscles before playing basketball Larson holds B-ball camp. The Monty Larson basketball camp held December 27 at the Warm . Springs Community Center gathered many participants for both age groups. Children age 6-1 2 was held in the morning and ages 13-17 was held in the afternoon. Monty is here to play in the annual holiday basketball tournament. Andy Leonard arranged for the basketball camp to happen. Madras Boys Take Third place at Seaside Madras boy's basketball team traveled to Se;::idc to participate in the Seaside Tournament of Champions and took home third place. Madras won the third place game against defending state champions Tillamook, with Scott Riddle leading the Buffs by scoring 13 of his 35 in the first quarter. Coach Evan Brown stated. "Riddle played a great game for us and did a fine job on the boards also." Madras held a 2 1 -1 7 lead after one quarter of play. In the second quarter both teams played even, with each scoring 1 5 by Madras and 1 4 by Tillamook. Madras outscored the Chcesemakers 20-14 in the third, but were outscored 20-1 2 in the fourth as the Chcesemakers tried rally. Brian Miller added 14 points for the Buffs. The Buffs lost the Friday nights semifinal game against Junction City by the score of 77-69. Scott Riddle scored 33 points for the Buffs, but Junction City's Ty Rothenberger had 43 points to offset Riddle's points. In the first. Junction City jumped out to a 29-1 8 lead and held on for the win. Madras coach Brown stated, "We just got off to a very slow start and had a lack of focus, effort, and enthusiasm." Madras is 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Tri-Valley. They will host Valley Catholic. January 7. at the Buff Dome.
