We need a 1 500 bed medium
security prison here in Central
Oregon like we need a hole in
the head. We have thriving
communities here that are
handling the slow growth as
the population is increasing all
across the country. The
economic situation here is
growing right along with the
population and is holding its
own. Not too fast or slow but
just keeping up with the growth.
Now there is talk of building
a prison here near Madras, and
the way things look officials
are deciding things before hand
and to present it to the citizens
in the area with out their in-put
to the matter.
There are points both pro and con as to why there should be a
prison built here. Many argue that it would be harmful to the local
residents and schools. Some say it would boost the economic
conditions here in Central Oregon. The prison would bring in
about 500 jobs if it is built here and an increase of the population
at a very rapid pace. Where would these people live because of
housing shortage with-in the area is critical at the present time.
There are already people on' the waiting lists for housing in the
area. Most of the appartments are full at the present time. One of
the largest employers here is the Bright wood Mill with employees
in search for apartments to live in. With the population as it is now
and with the ever growing population the schools are becoming
over crowded also even with the new Middle school just opened
on the east side of Madras. Schools all over in the area are
becoming over crowded makes one wonder where would all the
new kids fit in with the coming of the prison.
Another major concern to many is the safety of the local
residents from the escaped convicts in the area. With sites in
question would be near the school and could be very unsafe for the
children. You don' t know what to expect from a person who might
be on the run. They could be very dangerous, by taking hostages
and this usually ends up by someone losing their life. Distinction
to property, stealing of vehicles and other properties.
Just recently an article in the paper reported by individuals who
have moved to this area because they wanted to get away form
living next to a prison. They experienced damage to their porperty
losing a vehicle and it was damaged and when they tried to get
reimbursed for the repairs the state refused to offer any assistance,
so they had to suffer the consequences themselves.
Those who are in favor of building a prison here are probably
those who will never have to live next to the establishment and
will never experience these conditions of property loss and
damage, or have to face the safety factors of someone losing their
life to one of those escaped convicts.
I believe everything should be thourly discussed with all who
are of concern, the residence other organizations and just everyone
before anything is decided one way or the other. Everyone needs
a fair shake and should have their say on something like this.
Annual Veteran's Day Powwow will not be held this year
To the editor,
The Ike family is sad to announce
that we will not continue with the
Veteran's Day Powwow due lo
family financial hardship.
We extend our undying respect
and love for our men and women
veteran's and their service to our
people and ourcountry. It is our hope
the recognition we sought for these
veteran's reflected the love and
respect of all our people, attending
visitors and dancers.
Our grandfather was killed in
action in World War II and with his
death, we lost all opportunity to know
him. However, the gathering to pay
respect to veteran's at the Veteran's
Day Powwow, gave everyone
comfort and pride. Not only to our
family, but to many who lost loved
ones in past wars. Also, to those
families who were grateful to the
safe return of their peace time
veteran's.
We want to voice our utmost
gratitude to the Tribes for past
financial sponsorship and all other
sponsors. We also want to express
our gratitude to our elders who gave
us guidance and support. In addition,
we thank all our veteran's and their
families for their participation.
We will pass on a statue that was
handmade by Archie Caldcra in honor
of the late Caroline Tohct to Tribal

Radio-Thon
rescheduled
Ballot Measure 34
As the voting is all over and the new term will start its trend
toward the twenty first century, we will carry on with everyday
life trying to better the future for the younger generations..
With all the Oregon Ballot Measues taken care of there is one
that's on my mind and that's measure 34, Bear, cougar hunting.
The measure fell during election 65 to 35. The measure
would repeal a 1994, ban on hunting cougars or bears with bait or
dogs..
They go from one extreme to the other, why couldn't there be
a clause in the issue of pest and property protection. There has
been a lot of Cougars seen near school grounds and if the law was
spelled out to meet these crises of protection and safety on killing
cougars I feel this would seem to be the matter and not to turn
hunters loose for pleasure of just killing these animals. If an
animal poses harm to anyones family or property than he would
have the right to kill the animal, and not go hog wild about the
whole situation, using dogs and bait to kill these animals.

of unwritten Tribal laws that mandate,
the First Annual Radio-Thon for the
Women & Children's Shelter, which
was September 2, 1996. During this
time two elders had passed on and
out of respect we rescheduled the
Radio-Thon for Friday, February 10,
1997 from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00
midnight.
Their fundraising campaign will
culminate from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00
midnight. The price is $1.00 per

I am disappointed with the
adoptees. At the meeting not one
mentioned what they would offer the
tribe or what they would like to learn
about the Indian ways of the Warm
Springs, they just wanted what the
tribe has.
They just dug their ancestors out
of their graves and said "they are my
family". There was no respect for
them.
They go out and marry outside of
tribes, non-Indians, that was their
choice. They made their bed, they
could lie in it.
