4 October 24, 1996 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: 77a? way Y w The elections are coming up XT 0 for the National, State and Local G seats. There are some real important issues to be considered that all the candidates will be addressing. Some of the top priority one's are dealing with the Native American rights. This is something for each Tribal Member to be thinking about. The Native American vote is just as important as anyone and it counts. We have to look out for what little we have left and even at that there are people out there trying to take it away. Everyone is out to get what ever they can especially our treaty rights. We are being backed further and further into a corner, but we must hold fast and not give an inch in our treaty rights. Those promises made in the treaty of 1 855, are binding and that's the only treaty we recognize with the United States Government. Don't listen to sweet talk and big promises from people who would stab you in the back to get what he wants. Yep! He could make you feel real important with convincing words but watch that fine print, many, many people speak with the forked tongue. He will try to make you feel obligated to give up things in order to put you up on the pedestal. If a politician makes big promises that sounds good and at the present time he expects nothing; watch out for the future action from them. They can be pretty persuasive and convincing that where he could sell salt to a thirsty person in the middle of the desert even if he is about to die of thirst. We've got to get away from this attitude of saying, "Why should I vote, they already have their minds made up and will do what they want anyway." That's a very poor attitude to have. Remember every vote counts no matter who it is. There are some good candidates who have lost by a very slim margin and if all Native Americans would pool together and vote, things might turn out differently. And there are some who are very Anti-Indian who seems to find ways to get elected, that's why I say we should all stick to geter, the Indian vote and never give up, remember we live in a democratic world. "A Government by the people for the people." And we are people. Would you want to lose our rights we have enjoyed all down through the years? The rights we have been enjoying of hunting, fishing gathering all foods at accustomed places as it was agreed upon in the treaty of 1855. And now we Thanks for the wonderful Caribbean Cruise nirs (which were wonuenuuy encap; To the editor, This letter is to acknowledge and thank Indian Head Gaming for the wonderful Caribbean Cruise. We were treated like royalty on the cruise and had a wonderful time. We began our cruise after a complimentary overnight stay at Ft. Lauderdale on September 7, 1996. Bruce of the Ju niper Travel provided a complimen tary "$25 starter package" at the Ship's Casino, which I won $250 after spending $5. It was hot during the entire cruise and we didn't en counter any hurricanes, except Harry's participation in every pos sible event. We spent all our free lime near the swimming pool. Harry entered several poolside contests, including a Mr. Macho contest which he places second and the Cruise Olympics. There was an abundance of activities, food,, and wonderful hosts. We visited Jamaica and had eight hours to sight-sec, shop and bargain with the local residents. Much of the bargaining was "saying no" because they were aggressively try ing to peddle their goods; Grand Cayman Island where the blue water was clear and warm and the bcauli ful beaches were covered with snow white sand; Cozumcl, Mexico, where we spent the day shopping for souve- and had a fun-filled time at the local spots that catered to the cruise lines. After another day at sea, we arrived at Key West. It was on this part of the trip, that I received word of my mother's death, we were in the middle Thanks everyone To the editor, We, the Lawrence family would like to thank everyone for their sup port and prayers. There were greatly appreciated. We also want to thank Gladys Thompson and family, Larry Dick, Mona Starr, Evelyn Sam, Laura Stwycr and Margaret Boise. Special thanks to Daisy Ike. Also, would like to thank (he cooks and the Spine family for the deer & elk mcut they brought. Once again, thanks to ev eryone who showed up at the Longhouse. God Bless you all. I he Lawrence family Services need upgrading To the editor, Dear Tribal members and com munity of Warm Springs. "Who Cares!" Just recently the department I work for was informed of a 13 cut in their budget, in excess of $300,000!! This will put a drastic strain on a community already in need of more PoliceFireAmbulance services. We don't need these services cut to bare bones, we need them up graded to meet the growing needs of this community. Can we reasonably expect the al ready short staff of safety officers to protect us with one officer on duty covering an area the size of Warm Springs, who will go unattended? A domestic situation, a vehicle acci dent, a sick child, an elder, a home on fire, how will we set who is the prior ity? Can we reasonably expect the already short staff to protect us, to provide critical services without the support of equipment like vehicles and communication devises? I won't want to tell a person in need of a fire or medical service that there is no one I can send to help. If an emergency resulting in the loss of you re nweaioanena r fun filled day You are personally invited to join us November 2 1 at the Warm Springs life occurs, please don't blame safety officers who truly care about your health and safety. Our hands will not only be tied but cut off by a budget decision made by managers who don't realize the terrible cost of lives, welfare of the people, safety on the streets. And general protection of a community who don't need a sky box, who don't need to send manag ers to high priced meetings all over the states. We don't want to be losers in a game designed for politicians. Our Fire & Safety Officers have worked long and hard to build a fine depart ment of dedicated caring people. If we lose even one tiny part of the services they now offer, it could mean the loss of the life of one of our loved ones. Please, my people, don't let this happen. Talk to your Tribal Council representative. Talk to each other. We have a right to be protected. We have already paid the price too many times, too many lives lost, too many members of this reservation at risk because someone got greedy. Take care my people. I care about you. Billie Jo Bagley (McConville) of the ocean waiting to port in Key West. I tried to get off the ship and find alternative transportation home, but it was impossible. At Key West, to keep occupied and my mind clear, we toured Lrncst Hemingway shomc (beautiful-I'm a writer too) and ate at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritavillc Cafe. fMv mother enioved Jimmy Buffet. so I stayed there as long as I could). Grandchildren Will Hear, Begins Remember now that there is this issue of the 1865, treaty ini$ Hea floating around in the minds of the state legislators. This is JtaoTt something we don t wantjto be dealing with. Instead of them story telling, jump up, jam down, trying to make things right and do away with that treaty like laughing and crying experience. Just Senator Mark Hattie d sueeested. to make thines r dir. once and DnnJL yur "P. vour mina- , C3- for all. But no, they want to deal with this fraudulent treaty. I'm sure you all know the issue that's in question. The question of voting goes along with all issues the Confederated Tribes face today. We have special elections on certain issues of importance to all the tribal mambers and half the time most of the people don't get out to vote and everything is no fee administered. This is brought invalid, fcacn one or these special elections cost the Tribes a lot of t0 you by c.h.e.t. and Healthy dollars and when we don't all get out to vote, that's just money Nations down the drain, and people talk about spending money foolisly, this is one good example where money is wasted when people dont take the time to get out and vote. So make it your duty to get out and vote. Seems like everyone is only interested in pow-wows, a pow wow for this and a pow-wow for that. If everyone would get out and vote and do whats right for the tribes and when good things comes out of that, than that might be the time to really have a big blow out of apow-wow. Yep! That would be the time to have a real pow-wow. Just remember, "Let's be on the winning team..."Winners never quit, and quitters never win." AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! !
