Spino and Part teams get tangled up during the Wild Horse Race at the Donovan Danzuka Memorial. 1996 Joey Ortiz Memorial Road Warrior Biathlon is sched uled for Saturday, October 26, 1996 at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort, 9:00 a.m. All participants will ride a bi cycle, street bike or mountain bike, to the Industrial Park and back to the Kah-Nee-Ta Village. From the Kah-Nee-Ta Village they will continue by running eastward along the scenic 188 hole golf course, out to the 3.1 mile turn around point and back to the village for the finish. Pre-registered participant cost is $15 or team $30. Day of race cost is $20 or team $40. Divisions are Individuals-Men and women; team-men, women and co-ed (2 people, 1 biker 1 run ner) Awards will be given to Indi vidual and Team overall. This event was to honor Danzuka who enjoyed the Rodeo scene and who passed away last fall. Danzukas family and friends wanted to remember him in a special way, so they decided to hold this Wild Horse Race Memorial and hope to make it an annual event. The event for the men was the Wild Horse Race, for the women Barrel racing and the kids had Barrel racing and Mutton Bustin. There were sixteen teams enter in the Wild Horse Racing. The Jason Smith team won the first place jackets and beaded buckles. Spud Smith and his team, from Madras, went home with the second place jackets and beaded buckles. Receiving the Third place jackets was the Tim Hayes team from Prineville. The Buck Smith team left with the fourth place. The Barrel Racing was won by Snuffie Smith, Warm Springs, with Diane Greene finishing second. The kids barrel racing was won by Rene Steele from Redmond, with second JCMS sports start The Jefferson County Middle School fall sports schedule is as follows: 8th grade football on 10-2-96 Madras at Sisters, 10-9 Pilot Butte at Madras, 10-16 Madras at LaPine both 7th and 8th grades, 10-23 Madras at Crook County, 10-30 Culver at Madras.' The 7th grade boys Sisters comes to town on 10-1, 10-8 Pilot Butte at Madras, 10-16 at LaPine with the 8th graders, 10-22 Madras at Crook County, 10-29 Trinity at Madras. Taking home Third was Meghan Smith from Madras. Fourth place went to Rodney Smith III from Madras. Joella Smith and Jacoba Smith, both from Warm Springs, made good showings by winning the Fifth and Sixth spots. The crowd was entertained with the Mutton Bustin competition there were several youths signed up. Here are the winners from each age group: Joelle Smith, a three year old from Warm Springs, won the two to four year old age group. Winning the Five to Six division was Five year old Jason Begay, Warm Springs. Bobby Thurby, Warm Springs, held on to win the seven and up division. Kids ages 5-14 are eligible. White Buff Harriers win 1st a strong showing. The two were John Kalama and Koosh Selam. Kalama placed 24th, while Selam finished 29th. The Lady Buffs came from the Waldport Beach, Septemberl4, run with a first place trophy. Coach Lonnie Henderson stated, "This meet was a boost to our team morale, We set our sights ahead and ran very well considering the conditions. I am proud of this team, but we have our work cut out for us when we travel to The Dalles." Amy Hawes placed second with a time of 18:30. The next buff to come in was Brooke Alexander followed by Leila Woll 12th, Laura Riley 17th, Angela Sanders 18th, Madras lead the team score with 55 points followed by Crowe 73, Waldport 83 , Taft 87 , Jefferson 91, Regis 94 , and Harrisburg incomplete. Buff boys did not have a complete team, but did have two runners make Local makes team Warm Springs tribal member Wayne Gilbert, son of Doris Lewis, has made the cross country team at the Flandreau Indian School, in Flandreau, South Dakota. Gilbert is a senior there and is also involved in a school organization called Community of Caring, which goes around the community and shares a value system with other youths and community members. Cross Country coach Jerry Schochard stated "Wayne has improved his time two to three minutes from last year." Schochard also said "Gilbert is one of our finer students here and is a pleasure to work with as a student and athlete." On September 21, the White Buff Harriers traveled to The Dalles meet where they came in fifth place. "We had great performances from all the girls." Stated Coach Lonnie Henderson. He added "we have much work to do before the district meet." Hawes and Alexander ran right with the leaders. The boy's team was incomplete they had only one runner, Jon Klos. Hermiston won both the boys' and girls' meets. The Madras White Buffs came away from Estacade with there first league win last Friday, September 20. The win improves their record to 2 wins and one loss this season. The first half was a defensive game with no team having any luck moving the ball. The score was 0-0 after two quarters of play. In the Third quarter the Buffs final put to gather a drive resulting a touchdown. Jose Garcia scored from eight yards out, after a key 4th down 15 yard pass to Scott Riddle, making the score seven-zero with one quarter to play. The fourth was played the same as the previous three the defense dominating. Until Madras running back Seth Harris made a great run of 32 yards to the 1 yard line of Estacade. Michael Kirsh then ran it in from the one, Madras missed the extra point attempt making the score Madras 1 3 Estacade 0. Coach Deloretto stated "The defense held Estacade to 83 yards rushing, they did excellent job, I am proud of the way they bounced back from last week." The course is 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) and a 2.0 mile fun runwalk, on October 19, at the Kah-Nee-Ta resort. Race starts at the Village entrance at 10 a.m. , with pre-registration for the race set at eight dollars until October, 18 and ten dollars on the day of the race. Five dollars is the price for those wishing not to receive a T-shjrt. Also race day registration will be opened at nine am until at ten am. This was the first home game for the 1996 97 season. The defense dominated the first quarter with both teams unable to score. Then in the second quarter Seaside got the ball deep in the Buffaloe' s territory and running back Tony Putman ran the ball in from 10 yards out. A Madras turnover on their next possession gave the Seaside the ball again. Seaside pounded the ball in with quarterback Mike Little scoring from the 1 yard line. Madras's next possession they had to punt the ball. Seaside then drove the ball down field with a key pass that put them on Madras 5 yard line. Mike Little punch it in from the two for his second touchdown of the game. At half time the score read Seaside 21, Madras 0. After the half the scoring stopped until the fourth quarter when Seaside added seven more points with Chis Moes running the ball in from the 7 yard line. "This Seaside team has much experience and are well coached. They won a state title two years ago and were in the playoffs last year " Madras coach Chip Deloretto stated. Also adding "Seaside was big with their front line averaging 250 pounds and 16 seniors on their roster, but I felt that we weren't doing the things that we had too, to win this game." Coach Deloretto stated also adding "I am really proud of the team because they didn't give up and played hard until the game was over. Also, I liked the way they handled the loss-very serious." Seaside had 286 rushing yards on 47 carries. Mike Little passed for 109 yards, he was 6-12 passing. Madras rushed for 62 yards, Keller Chirstenson getting 57 yards of those yards on 19 carries. Madras quarterback Mike Kirsch passed for 66 yards, he was 3-12. Scott Riddle had two catches for 60 yards.
