Grief, suffering can be avoided if we all Editor's Note: The following article was written by Guy Wallulatum, a psychology major at Oregon State University. He recommends that local resources be utilized if help is needed. He suggests Warm Springs Community Counseling, school counselors, church leaders, longhouse leaders, elders or other people who are trusted. There are probably many families here in Warm Springs that recognize the symptoms, problems and family pain that accompany the abuse of drugs. It doesn't matter what drug it is, be it alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines or some other drug, they are all dangerous. Today, the risk and danger will be even higher because the drug will be abused in combination with another drug (alcohol crank marijuana coke). This will make them more dangerous to your brainmind and heartbody. Methamphetamine, also known as crank, crystal and speed, is highly addictive and its use is on the rise in the United States. It is especially on the rise in the Western states and its impact is being felt in Indian Country, as well. Methamphetamines are the most widely illegally manufactured, distributed and abused type of amphetamine, a class of stimulant drugs. Cocaine used to be the number-one abused stimulant, but because of its shorter time-period effects, one-half hour or so as compared to one to five hours or even days depending on the Tymoo ; : ' ' ' . . cBk . -J 1..- , v j I Patch Leonard tries to advance i-. I, i i mi mv , y individual's body chemistry, and cost, methamphetamines are becoming the drug of choice of addicts. The danger to mind and body is just as bad, if not worse, due to the manufacturing. A stimulant drug is alluring to individuals because of its effects, which include intensified emotions, increased alterness, altered self-esteem and euphoria of a feel good state or "rush". Methamphetamines like crank, crystal or speed have very similar effects. In today's fast-paced world, family values are not easily taught, because both parents have to work or a single parent is trying to teach these values by himherself. Alcohol and drugs induce qualities which adults, parents, try to teach to kid. Alertness, motivation, self-confidence, socialization, excitement, ability to work long hours, to be active, to have trim bodies, etc. are all enhanced, so the user feels, by drug and alcohol abuse. These desirable qualities soon give way to the negative effects of depression, anti-social behavior, paranoia, violence and can lead to suicide, in severe cases. As tolerance to the drug takes place, more of the drug is needed just to maintain "being normal". You need more of the drug to avoid the "big crash" as a deep depression will be one of the first symptoms to occur. Methamphetamines, like all drugs, affect the central nervous system, which is the main computer and integratorof information for the mind and body. It's literally "you" and controls your bodily functions and P.O. The principle organ of the central nervous system is the brain, with the spinal cord a valuable structure connected to the brain. These two valuable structures have pathways and nerves connected to every part of your body. In trying to keep this simple: Alcohol and drugs can reduce or cut off information going to any region of your body. One nerve impeded, out or disconnected, can cause bodily disfunction, be it numbness, dizziness, blindness, deafness, paralysis, lack of feelings emotions or overload of emotions, such as anger, sadness, rage, hate, you lose all control or it leads to death. You lose control, because you gave it to the drug. The biggest concerns in the abuse of drugs, specifically methamphetamines, is that meth use is being linked to the rising cycle of violence. In the brain, and brainstem, the lower part of the brain, meth cuts off communications to these parts of the brain where judgments are formed and where emotions, like happiness, sadness or anger, are controlled and regulated. Paranoia can set in, mistrust, nervousness, agitation, anger, strike out at own family mainly because you're around family more. You've lost your common sense to drugs. Friends will notice problems and change in behavior also. Examples from articles researched: An easy going, non-violent man hit his girlfriend while on a meth high. He said, he "didn't mean to, but ECR WSS Postal Patron Warm Springs, OR 97761 at, a i ' I A I University of Oregon Library hi''" , . V Fifth and sixth grade coach Scott Moses talks to team stay away from drugs...." the meth put me over the edge." A woman killed her seven-month old son, by feeding him meth. She said, "she was responding to a message from God". (Delusions, hallucinations). A man working overtime on the job, used meth to keep up with the pace. His use got out of control and he started abusing his children and spouse, as they were the blame for his losing sleep, eating problems, health and work problems. With meth use or any other drug, you risk or gamble to lose your mind or can develop severe psychiatric disorder problems. These are some signs of methamphetamine abuse: Severe weight loss, body sores, grayness of skin, exaggerated physical movements, dilated pupils. Prolonged alteration in sleeping, eating or sexual habits, marked mood swings. Rapid and excited speech, decreased attention span, restlessness, fear and anxiety. Increased isolation from friends, problems at workhome, financial difficulties for which unusual explanations are offered. Delusional behavior, impulsive, repetitive projects, take on tasks that never seem to be completed. Child, spousal or animal abuse, acts of violence, frequent expressions of anger, paranoia, depression and suicidal ideation. This is a short summary about the affects and dangers of methamphetamines. Meth is being peddled and sold in Warm Springs and in neighboring areas right now. Let's hope and pray our families, friends and neighbors stay away from all drug use. One article I used was titled, "A demon stalks the land". Let's hope it's not a family member, friend or neightbor under the influence of some drug, not being their true self. The grief and suffering can be avoided if we all stay away from drugs and support each other as friends.
