4 August 29, 1996 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: Tfie way it is SVIhYkY SPifS The Black Hills, Well we are not in South Dakota, but we do have some Black Hills, for the time being that is. The hills turned black form the recent 120,000 acre Simnasho fire. Each year we seem to ha ve one major fire herein the reservation where a base camp is set up for all the firefighters that come in from various parts of the country. This year we have the Simnasho Fire that blackened some 120,000 acres of the reservation and it all started by man. The fire is still under investigation as to how it may have started but the blaze started between Simnasho and Red Lake. All other major fires have not been as large as this years fire and have not consumed any homes or structures at all. When the smoke sort of cleared out and the sky was visible once again there are always the, "IPs," "If We did this, or If we did that.' All those decisions to be made on how to attack the fire. There are times when a person makes a decision on how to go about containing a fire , there seems to be something wrong, or the wrong method has been selected to fight the fire. Decisions are based on many factors, the safety of the lives of fire fighters, the weather conditions, wind etc. When and where not to back fire. Yep! This year's fire tops all the fires in recent years of the size and the number of personnel, equipment of all kinds to fight the fire. The base camp set up in Simnasho housed all the fire fighters that were brought in which numbered to around 1 600 men, along with all the equipment of planes, helicopters, all those bull dozers, fire trucks and what ever type of equipment that was needed to fight this pesky fire. Several times it appeared to be under control but the wind would come along and wake up the fire where it covered a great area of the reservation. Crossing the Warm Springs River going on to Miller Flat area threatening homes in triot OfOO fi r 1 1 1 r Pii;Amn(t A r m tli i roll Air r Tf i frTn-kr uritU u.t i,..u.j OWuvF.5 uuwh u.w vauwjT wuii Fredrick Henson at Scripps Hospital such force with huge flames burning everything in it s way, where concluded that Rudy had a lung in it destroyed 1 1 homes on the reservation. In Dry Creek alone it fection He also had double pneumo burned trailer homes and other structures. There were a few people who stayed and fought the flames using wet blankets and what ever they could to beat out the flames. Had they left they probably would have came home to apile of ashes. When the wind gets hold of the flames in the dry grassy areas there's hardly anything that can stop the flames. The fire was spread out covering a large area where it was necessary to bring in all the Fire Fighting Crews as possible. Crews came from Florida, New York Pennsylvania and many other parts of the country.that sent in Hotshot Crews to fight the fire. We were very fortunate there was no serious injuries during the fire, as I'm sure everyone had the thought of the "King Mountain Fire," in the back of there minds that took lives of fire fighters in Colorado. Yep! Wild fires can be very un-predictable and dangerous when the wind changes. Especially where the grass is tall and dry, a good breeze can take a flame in no time to cover a large are. And If you are in its path you'd better, "Skadattle out of there as fast as you can." The Smoke and carbon substances can choke a person very easy and fast. A person should study the wind pattern to make sure not to get caught in its path. The plan of attack on range fires is a task, Many decisions have to be made. Sometimes it appears as if the wrong decision was made and makes other wonder where a person is coming from, but in the long run things work out. Sometimes to burn a few extra acres of land to save hundreds of acres works well. Fire Fighting is very dangerous if a person doesn't have the experience and ewe are lucky to have had experienced Hot Shot crews coming in to help with the Simnasho Fire. AHH-NAHH-CHI-TOON! ! ! Toe Ness Ole Bob lost hid job and his friend asked why did the foreman fire him? Bob said: "You know that a foreman is the one who stands around and watches others work," His friend, "Well, what's that got to do with it?" Bob said, "He got jealous because everyone thought I was the foreman." YIKES SS ss Bill told his buddy Ben, "Here lately I've been shooting golf in the low 70's. But if it gets any colder I'm quitting." YIKES SS SS There was this guy about to go on trial, a lawyer called him and said, "I'd like to defend you, and I have some dependable witness I can bring along." Dr.. Crcclman, at the Health & Wellness Center, has also released him, saying his recov ery is complete. It started almost two years ago for Rudy. He wasn't feeling well and he underwent a scries of tests in Bend. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong and Rudy continued with his hectic schedule as Director of the Public Information Branch, Chairman of the Gaming Work Group and later as the Chairman of the Gaming Board of Directors. In late June, 1995, Rudy was feeling more and more rundown and his cough was getting worse. In early July, 1995, the Warm Springs Health & Wellness Clinic speculated he had tuberculosis and treated for it while awaiting the return of tests. In early September it was determined that he didn't have TB and he re turned to work. The week after returning to work, Rudy traveled to Southern Califor nia with Tribal Council. Rudy col lapsed and awoke at Scripps hospital in San Diego. We would like to thank Jazzy Wewa for his help, as well as Lynn Davis and Tribal Council mem bers Delvis Heath., Mickey Brunoe, Irene Wells, Joe Moses and Jacob Frank, Sr. Mickey stayed over in San Diego and assisted us in getting lodg ing and a rental car. Can you understand yourphone bill?Does the bank send you small print docu ments that says your charge card or checking account, or your savings will be going through some changes? An education will get you thorough the maze of information being thrown at you. During the operation they found the infection had damaged his lung to the extent that part of the lung had to be removed. Rudy convalesced for a week before returning home. Rudy's problems persisted and was admitted to Ml. View Hospital in Madras three times and St. Charles Hospital in Bend twice. Finally, in early November he entered the Or egon Health Science University Hos pital in Portland. Doctors Caobanoglu and Ott, and a team of other doctors performed another operation to re pair leakage in the area of the lung that had been operated on in Califor nia. We have had so much support from the community during Rudy's illness and we are very thankful to all of you who helped, offered help and offered financial assistance. Our neighbors, Irene and Jack Towe, took care of our horse and watched our home when we were gone. ..Bob Pawalik, who hauled and got hay fro our horse. Especially touching was the collection of funds spearheaded by Norene Greene & Kate Jackson, Govenor Vic and Mr. Atyiah were very supportive. Our many friends from the Grand Ronde Reservation in the Willamette Valley, who of fered their prayers, good wishes and support. Rudy has been Master of Cer emonies of their powwow for the last few years, and as a result, we have many friends there. We appreciated their concern. Rudy's brothers and sister and their families visited him on numerous occasions, not only in Madras and Bend, but also in Port land. They were always there offer ing their support. Nettie & Sylvia were wonderful, coming to the hos pital in Bend and the hospital in Port land to perform special blessings for him. There are so many people to life choices. An education will cause you to ask questions to the doctor that fearand not knowing would have stopped you. An education puts an inner discipline into your life that causes someone to decide to learn to basket weave, or paint, or learn a language so that time will not allow a tradition or custom to disappear from life. An education calls a thief a thief. An education says to people in power-enough. Today is a good school day. Read a book, watch a bird fly over, ask an Elder for a story. Learn something new today.
