also threatened by the fire; there was
no tractor available so the man pro
tected his family's house, born, cor
rals and outbuildings by hooking a
harrow onto his pickup hitch and
circling the area then watering down
the ground for additional protection.
Another incident involves a local
hotshot crew, supervised by a tribal
member. This relates to the Simnasho
fire that had jumped the Warm
Springs River near the fish hatchery
and was raging down the hill toward
Upper Dry Creek. Because the fire
was moving at an incredible speed
down the hill, this supervisor made a
snap decision to do a backburn to
slow the fire down, something that
requires management approval.
Knowing that human life and homes
were in extreme danger, a backburn
was lit which delayed the fire long
enough for residents to be warned of
the impending danger and the need
to evacuate.
In the same circumstances, an
employee in a tribal department was
put in charge of a crew to help fight
the fire because of his prior
firefighting experience. Without
prior approval an considering the
circumstances, he ordered his crew
to initiate a backburn around
Sunnyside subdivision, had this not
been done, lives and homes could
have been lost.
A fire broke out near Mill Creek
canyon, just east of Highway 26 in
Wasco County. The residents pre
sumed that authorities were aware
of the fire, but apparently were not,
as they were concentrating on the
Simnasho fire at the time. The fire
burned through the canyon and
jumped the canyon into a large stand
of trees north of the canyon. Two of
the residents called in at different
times to report the fire to headquar
ters and a recon plane was immedi
ately dispatched to check out the
status of the fire. In the meantime,
the fire was roaring through the dry
grass, trees and sagebrush above the
canyon. Pine trees could be seen
bursting into flame one after another
and coming closer to highway 26.
Headquarters sent one helicopter to
dump water on the base of the flumes,
which helped, but didn't seem like
enough. One of the tribal member
loggers with years of firefighting
experience and knowledge of the ter
rain called headquarters and asked
permission to immediately start
building firetrails with caterpillars.
His request was denied, and lie was
told the dozer bosses to wait, but he
hung up the phone and proceed to
disburse his cats and crew to the fire
without permission. Two homes were
in immediate dangcrif the fire jumped
the canyon and went northwest. There
were no pumpers nearby to protect
homes; they arrived later. He also
called another tribal logger, told him
the situation and to bring his cuts to
the fire. At one point, the first logger
cat driver disappeared into the smoke
and flames to complete his trail. Help
was called for, to rescue him, but he
eventually reappeared and contin
ued to double cut the trail. If the fire
had jumped Highway 26, there was
the possibility of involving our for
est and creating a bigger fire. The
potential also existed of homes and
lives becoming endangered. From a
vantage point near Highway 26, we
saw firefighters show up on the scene.
It was a relief and comfort to know
that ground crews had arrived and
caterpillars with skilled operators
were lined up making a firctrail and
several blades wide.
I am not writing this article to
encourage people to become heroes,
nor to put their lives on the line. But
I do know there are such exceptional
individuals in our small but close
knit community who will do what
their hearts and circumstances tell
them must be done. Although our
three tribes do not necessarily see
eye-to-eye on many issues, it is di
sasters such as floods and fires that
bring us closer together that we
know we have common goals which
are to protect our people, resources
and land base. It is catastrophes such
as this which activates humility
among our people. It is a time to put
aside pride and reflect upon how
euch of us can make a constructive,
positive and lasting difference in
Wurm Springs during the time
granted euch of us as a gift of life.
What arc you doing with your life?
How can we repay this Tribe for
what it has done for us? As yourself
these questions; and answer them
truthfully. We have so much for
which to be grateful, in a world where
many other people do not have even
the basis necessities to sustain life.
It serves as a calming effect to
know we have people like these
among us who truly care about the
reservation and in theirjudgment will
do the right thing at the right time.
They don't do things for publicity or
money, but rather because of a need
to preserve and protect. You know
who you are. By your own choice,
you will never be subjects of head
lines in the newspaper or media, but
you have the satisfaction of knowing
that you were the best you could be at
the time, under the circumstances.
That is your reward. You look in awe
at a child or another person, a house,
a subdivision, a resource, and marvel
at its existence. The least we can do
is to write a note of appreciation to
you, the anonymous, uncelebrated
defenders.
This will serve also as an expres
sion of gratitude to the many local
tribal firefighters, tribal departments,
and those from other states and agen
cies who came from far and near to
Warm Springs to help contain the
Simnasho Fireof 1996. Withoutyour
assistance, dedication and persis
tence, the fire could have taken a
worse toll. If you ever come back to
Warm Springs, under R & R circum
stances, we welcome you back to
enjoy our popular recreation area and
other inviting amusements. Because
of the role you played, we have
learned to more appreciate the place
we have chosen to live our lives,
Warm Springs, Oregon. Hopefully,
you will then see our place in a color
other than black, preferably green,
when you return.
