"Good" fire chars 1,310 acres of sage, juniper
When a wildland fire is burning just beyond the edge of your back yard, it's more than
difficult to think of it as good. But that's exactly what local fire officials have called the
1,310-acre Kuckup Fire that had some reservation residents hopping July 9.
The 7 p.m. fire, the cause of which has still yet to be determined, quickly spread in a
south, southeast direction, from the Trailer Courts. The blaze burned mostly sage,
juniper, bunchgrass and other rangeland vegetation.
Sixty to 80 people helped control the fire. The interagency effort consisted of crews
from Warm Springs Fire Management, Warm Springs Fire and Safety, the US Forest
Service, the BIA, BLM and the Jefferson County Rural Fire Protection District. The fire
was completely controlled by July 14.
Fire officials urge all residents to use caution when outdoors.
