Warm Springs Summer
Recreation Program is in progress as
of June 24 and will run until August
9, 1996. Daily activities for children
6 years & older are conducted by
Recreation Department staff and
summer recreation youth workers.
All participants must have signed
consent waiver. A Summer
Recreation schedule may be picked
up at that time.
Kids at the Community Center
that choose not to participate in the
program will not be supervised.
The Summer Food Service Lunch
Program will be served in the Social
Hall during the noon hour Monday
through Thursday. No outside food
allowed at this time. No food is taken
outside.
All Recreation staff participating
during water activities are certified
in lifesaving and or Water Safety and
Rescue. All Summer Recreation
youth workers are certified in
Emergency Water Safety.
Children who would like to attend

Recently, I attended the Memo
rial Dedication in Prineville for the
fallen Hot Shots who didn't survive
the South Canyon Fire in Colorado.
It was quite moving I must say. There
were Hot Shot crews from all over,
including our very own Hot Shots,
who came and paid tribute to our
fellow brothers and sisters who
fought a good battle, but unfortu
nately, did not survive. Many of the
parents of these fine young people
spoke of their feelings....some of them
have healed and others have not. The
Memorial itself is truly a work of art,
to say the least. If you are ever in
Prineville, do yourself a favor and go
visit it. The sculpture depicts wild
land firefighters as they are:
hardworking, proud and full of life.
It was a day of mixed emotions. I saw
many old friends, including myiold
buddy, Smokey the Bear, and new
friends. Some of whom I will never
see again. The next time you see pne
of these fine people, remember that
they put their lives on the line every
time they go on a wildfire. I can only
hope and pray that a tragedy like this
is never repeated again.
Pi-Ume-Sha weekend is just
around the corner and I want to re
mind everyone to have a really good
time, but PLEASE, BE SAFE, NOT
SORRY!! And..need we say more
about the Fourth of July ????? Please,
please, be careful with your fire
works. The grasses are pretty tall and
getting drier by the day. Use only
APPROVED fireworks, but think of

Friday field trips must sign up by
Thursday and have consent form
signed by parents. Trips are on a first
come first-served basis. There will
be no Friday morning sign ups.
Children 6 years & older are welcome
to sign up. The Summer Food
Program will prepare sack lunches
for the children attending field trips.
No thongs, stereos or walkmans
allowed on any field trips, no
exceptions. Kids are not permitted to
bring glass containers (pop bottles,
etc.) to the Community Center or on
field trips.
Any child leaving the center on
the Field trip or special event must
return with the Recreation group.
Unless prior arrangements are made
by permission slip signed and turned
in by parents or guardians prior to
departure.
There are eight Friday Field Trips
on the schedule, they are: The Cove
State Park, The DallesPetroglyphs,
Oaks Park, Juniper Aquatic Center,
Enchanted Forest, Clackamas

Getting away
You have been caught on the spot
before. You innocently approach the
desk of a co-worker to ask a simple
question, and before you know it,
half of the office has convened on the
spot and joined the conversation.
Although these informal gatherings
can be useful at times to help break
up the tension and monotony of the
work day, they can also be useless
time drains. Here are some ways to
get out of the early morning huddle
before it's time for lunch.
State the obvious. Simply mention
that you have work to complete and
therefore must get back to it. The
direct method is often the most
effective because no one can be
offended by your lack of participation
if other work awaits.
Ask to be excused, if co-workers
continue to linger over certain issues
that no longer concern you, simply
ask them to excuse you and make
your way back to your desk. You
might want to say something like,
"This really isn't my area of expertise,
so I think I will get back to my phone
calls."
Be aware of the time. This will
help you to realize just how much of
your day you are wasting. It never
hurts to remind co-workers that the
day is slipping away. Simply wait for
a pause in the conversation and then

awareness may remind other
colleagues that they, too, have to get
going on their various projects.

you see you are being dragged into a

The Warm Springs Summer
Recreation Program is pleased to
announce that the SMART reading
program will be offered throughout
the summer. The purpose of the
SMART Program is to empower
children to become confidentreaders.
The program is based on a one-on-one,
30-minute, session.
Volunteer adults and summer
workers will be assigned to sit and
read with their partner. The reading
can be adult to child, child to adult, .
or partner reading.
A daily log will be updated after
each session to chart progress.
Children will receive two books a
month from their partner readers.

Sisters attend Oregon State Penitentiary gatherings

During the past 15 months, Warm
Springs tribal members Sylvia
Wallulatum and her sister Nettie
Shawaway have been entering the
Oregon State Penitentiary and lead
ing the Lakota Oyate-Ki Club in
opening prayer at our club's gather
ings. Hearing them speak in the
Sahaptin language and snaring words
about the Creator's blessings have
been a special blessing in itself. We
are thankful that Grandfather has
blessed us with their presence.
The Native American prisoners at
OSP and the families who bring their
children to Lakota Club powwows
look forward to having Sylvia and
Nettie at our future gatherings. The
Warm Springs people are gifted to
have such Elders as these two and it
would be good to listen to what they
have to offer Indian people when
they speak and lead in prayer.
