Wings of America held a Running Wings is a American Indian Youth and Fitness Camp, in Warm Springs development program of Earth Circle June 25-28, 1996 at the Community Foundation, based in Santa Fe, New Center. Mexico and was established in 1 988. Jefferson County All-Stars Major League Boys Going to District Baseball Tournament July 12, 13 and 14 in Hermiston Riddle going to Colorado Wings' goal is to reach Native youth and teach them about health, proper diet and the importance of exercise. Substance abuse prevention is also part of the curriculum. Over 2,000 Native youth have participated in Wings. College-aged Wings runners facilitate the camps. Martha Poolaw, a Seminole from Oklahoma, camp coordinator, stated "Coordinating the activities at camps is challenging because of the age difference." Poolaw has alot of experience working with youth by being a special education teacher. Gina Timberman, a Choctaw from Mustang, Oklahoma, is an English Literature graduate from! Oklahoma State University, plans to' attend law school at the University' of Oklahoma in the fall this year.Timbermans strong academic background makes her a good role model. Gena started with Wings in 1990. Chance Rush, HidatsaSioux, a student at Oklahoma Baptist University, is majoring in Social work. Rush is a three-time NAIA All-American in track and field. Chance has been involved with Wings program since 1991. Rush stated "Working with Wings gives me an opportunity to send a message to youths about staying healthy and drug-free by running or any other sport." Lenny Esson.Navajo, rrom Lupe, Arizona coaches basketball, cross country and soccer. Esson stated, "He enjoys being involved in Wings for he has a chance to work with youths from different tribes across the states." Recreation Director, Austin Greene, statedThere was a good turn-out of youths with 50 or more at the camp." Sponsoring this camp was Warm Springs Recreation. Eagle Spirits Tournament to be held 727-2896 The Eagle Spirits Co-Ed Slowpitch Softball Tournament will be held on July 27 & 28, 1996 at the fields behind the Warm Springs Com munity Center. This will be a true double elimina tion with a total of 12 teams. Entry fee is $223 and the deadline is July 22, 1996. There will be places 1st through 6th, all clothing awards, Sportsman ship, golden glove awards to one female and one male. Tom finals-bound Justin Tom, tribal member, son of Cheryl Tom and Lee Tom, has qualified for National High School Rodeo finals, held at Pueblo, Colorado July 15-18,1 996. Tom will be going as reserve Champions, along with his Team Roping partner Clint Hill from Merrill, Oregon. They will be leaving July 1 1, for the Rodeo. Tom overcame an injury this year, as his right thumb was completely cut off and reattached, Tom was told he would not be able to rope for four to six months, but was back in six weeks. Upon returning Tom and Hill placed first in Union and Mollala, they also placed fourth in Ontario. They were in second place going into the State Rodeo Finals held June 10 12 , 1996. With the top three teams 1 2 point from each other.from Saturdays show, Tom and Hill were in third place but a strong finish on Sunday gave them second place.This is Toms fouth year going and his last.due to Tom graduating from Madras Senior High. Trip to Belgium set for August 5-12.... Smith joins elite basketball squad of top players from around the Northwest. There are three teams going from the United States and this is the first year Oregon has a team playing in the European Games. Shasta will be the only Native American Indian on the Northwest squad, The team was chosen by Sports Challenge, she was nominated by someone who had seen her play basketball at Madras High School. Shasta then went to Portland to meet selection committee, where they interviewed her. The committee then selected players whom they thought best represented the United States. Shasta started playing at Warm Springs youth tournaments when she was eight years old and enjoys softball also but says basketball is her favorite sport. Smith is very excited about going to Belgium, When the team arrives in Belgium they will be going on a site seeing tour before they play any games. Shasta has expenses paid for but is fund raising for personal spending money, Information on fund raising will be posted later. - I - W . j l J T -" "7i .t i.f . st j Shasta Smith Shasta Smith, daughter of Frank and Shirley Smith is going to Belgium, August 5-12, 1996, as a member of the 1 5 to 1 8 year-old girls basketball team. This squad consist 4th annual Bustin1 Buffaloes Basketball Camp July 15-19 Grades 2-5 9 a.m. to noon Grades 6-9 1 to 4 p.m. Madras High School Gym $40 if pre-registered by July 5 $50 registration at the door. This team consist of Central Oregon 's top players, and Riddle made the team May 11, when try-outs were held. In Colorado they will be playing against other elite teams from all areas across the states. Riddle has received many awards in basketball, including first-team all state, first team Tri-Valley and Player of the Year for the Tri-Valley League. Madras varsity basketball coach Evan Brown stated "this is a great chance for Scott to show his talents off, because there will be scouts from most of the major Division One schools." Coaching this team is Sherwood High School head coach, Bruce Jorge n sen. The Pi-Ume-Sha Run was held Saturday June 29. The two-mile race had a total of 20 runners and the 10 K had eight runners. Warm Springs Running club member Gladys Squiemphen stated " The run was successful despite the heat." Also adding "It was nice too see alot of adults running this year.' The Running club would like to thank all the runners and volunteers who participated this year.
