Warm Springs, Oregon
Spilyay Tymoo
E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
Central Oregon needs a I T 0
freeway on highway 26, from G
just west of Warm Springs to
Madras, Oregon. And on highway
97 south from Madras to
Redmond. The present freeway
from Redmond to Bend, Oregon,
really takes the pressure off the
traffic conditions in that area,
from points north of Redmond,
OR., is another problem and
hazardous.
A very bad traffic hazard now
since the population has increased
the Central Oregon area. The main
accidents happen nearly are all
head-on collisions, as there are
some drivers who hold up traffic
and there are those who are very
impatient and try to pass a line of cars and the results are a traffic
accident. Most of the time it's the innocent who suffer the most
and usually get the most damage done to them. The results are
several bad injuries and sometimes fatal. Usually the impatient
driver gets away with out a scratch
A person driving along and knows he is holding up traffic
should have the courtesy to pull over and let traffic pass, but
instead of doing so he just keeps going along like if he was the only
one on the highway. Also the slow driver comes to a passing lane,
it never fails where he speeds up to where no one can pass and
went he passes the passing land he slows up once again and here
we go again the same old traffic line.
Another thing that is very frustrating is when a bunch of these
18 wheelers get together and travel down the highway, it is very
impossible to pass a whole fleet of trucks like this. To make things
even worse as these trucks are all lined up than here comes a bunch
of campers who get behind these 1 8 wheelers to really add salt to
the wound.
It would be a safer place to travel if we had freeways in central
Oregon, to make things even better we should have a freeway
right from Portland, Ore., right through Central Oregon. Yep! It
would put Central Oregon right down town Portland if there was
a freeway all the way over Mt, Hood.
Now that school has let out for the summer there are many
people who like to get out and do some camping and fishing and
where else is there to go but to the great Central Oregon with all
the high lakes and streams flowing freely. On Friday of each week
there is a constant flow of traffic leaving Portland, OR, where all
are going out camping and fishing. Than on Sunday evening the
traffic is going the other way, back to the city for another week.
But even with all the metro area people home for the week we still
have traffic problems here in Central Oregon that need attention.
Student Employment
Students are being dismissed for the summer months and will
be working around the Community at all types of jobs for the
summer. I
Each year all tribal department try to provide a job for students.
This can be very valuable to aistudent where heshe can see what
it s really like on the job during the summer months. It gives them
Love and prayers appreciated during the loss of beloved father
To the editor,
First off, please accept my apology
fortaking longat getting this letter of
love and support from all of the people
who extended their help and prayers.
I would like to thank "Hec-Kah"
(Gale Lawrence, Sr.). Because he
was the person who brought message
for our father, Charles Cleveland
Jackson, having his strokecoronary
on April 10.
I would give all my love and
support to my cousin who was our
Father's caregiver for these last 23
years, Fayc Jabeth Compo, Mr. &
Mrs. Gilbert Cutfingcr, Jr., Vesta
my niece, loved by us all, and their
daughter Michele and one of the many
adopted young men that loved and
spent time with our father, Richard
Mad Man.
One of the first people that I called
was our two grandmothers, Nettie
Shawaway and Sylvia Wallulatum
and they told me whatever 1 needed
they would do to help us. We could
not have made it without the love and
support from my two loving aunts,
whom I can call on and they are there
for us, Eliza P. Brown and Neda
Wesley.
One thing that I would like to
mention is that I know this was hard
on our two elders because it wasn't
long ago that they lost their sister and
yet they were with us in our time of
need and we very much appreciate
all their love, support, prayers and
words of encouragement that they
gave us. They came to Lewiston,
Idaho to make our Father's outfit and
sing such beautiful songs which I
know was hard for them and we love
and thank them from the bottom of
our hearts.
Eliza is more like a mom to me
everyday, because I can call on her
for just about anything, she's there
for my children when they need a
Kuthlas loving touch and embrace.
My children call her Grandma Truck
when we talk on the phone. I
especially would like to thank her for
helping us and her words of
encouragement and for bringing out
father's coffin and outer box to us.
And a huge thank you goes out to
my cousin Daniel Lawrence for
driving my aunt up to Lewiston,
Idaho. At this time I would like to
thank my other aunt whom would do
whatever she could for us and that is
Neda Wesley and my Uncle Jimmy
for ordering the coffin and outer box.
I know they wanted to be with us but
they couldn't.
I would also like to thank my
cousin Agnes (dime) Lawrence for
taking time to spend with us and
Daniel and Lil Danny at St. Joseph's
Hospital. Please be patient with me
because I'm not even halfway on my
list of thank you's.
I would like to thank my very
understanding manager at work for
giving me the time I needed to be
with my father, Aurolyn Watlamet,
GM, and my immediate manager,
Sandra Rolcne.
For those who don't know our
Father was given 48 hours to live, but
he lingered and passed away on May
3rd, 1996 at 3:45 p.m.
We had a traditional funeral for
him. I would like to thank my fellow
co-workers for the collection they
sent to us. I would also like to thank
John Brown for his help and support.
Thank you to Carlos Calica, my
nephew, and the Credit Department
for acting fast on my application.
Thank you to my Auntie Verbena
(Beans) Greene and her family for
sending prayers and calling to see
how we were doing because they
wanted to be with us and they could
not.
I would like to take this time to
thank Armond Minthorn for making
his trip from Pendleton, Oregon and
bringing his singers to sing during
our fathers dressing at Braurcr one in
Lewiston, Idaho.
A huge thank you to the Kicking
Women Singers and the families that
traveled from Montana to dedicate a
song to the family and for the services
we had at the hospital. I would also
like to thank the Scabby Robe family
for their prayers and words of
encouragement.
The hospital staff was very
supportive and understanding while
we had services for our Father. One
think I would also like to mention is
the othcrpaticnts at the hospital were
so sweet and understanding that the
first night of services we had at the
hospital before his passing. We would
start at 7:00 p.m. and people would
come in different groups because it
would be open service. The other
patients could hear our prayer
services and ministries from the
different church, so I would make
sure that they, along with family and
friends shared a midnight snack with
us and they were so happy to meet us
and thanked us for sharing with them.
At this time I would like to send a
thank you to my aunt Millie Col wash
and her daughter's for sending the
feathers, which made beautiful
boutonnicres and for sharing a bundle
for the giveaway after the funeral.
Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Lee
WhitePlume for opening their home
to the family.
I would also like to thank my
extended family in Lapwai, Idaho:
Mr. and Mrs. Lawyer, Loretta and
Wendell Antell, Jane VanPelt and
Faye's Shaker ladies who sang
beautifully at the hospital and at the
house.
I would at this time like to take the
time to say thank you to the Pi-Nee-Wahs
staff for opening the
Community Center and for keeping
it open and clean. For the good cooks

To the editor,
Hello, you all once more. I'm
learning a lot more where I now am
about life that I'd love to share with
you all some very importance of
summer weather.
It's summer and we should all
drink plenty of water through it.
Water is a very healthy drink.
Look at it, it's also not so expensive.
It drains all the bad that may be
inside of us by urinating it out.
In the summer drink plenty of ice
water, it's cook and very healthy.
Thank you.

what we would have done.
All my love and respect goes out

Clay Jack Starr, Jackson Mitchell and
Ryan Windyboy.
Even though we got one night of
practice a week, I am glad that these
kids improved quite a bit. The one
thing I stressed the most was whether
we won or lost, Sportsmanship was
the key factor in all things. We re
ceived many sportsmanship awards
in different youth tourneys. Another
thing I stressed was that we were to
all stay on ONE team and to be switch
ing to the best team like I've noticed
a lot of teams that "LOAD-UP" just
to "WIN". A lot of our Indian kids
are shut our due to "COMPETI
TION". There isn't enough room at
the community center for them. So a
lot of our Indian kids got to go prac
tice outside the community. All in
all, I believe all of our little Indian
kids have the ability to excel in sports
and for the kids that don't have the
opportunity to play very much on a
team that is what our All-Indian
Youth Tourney is all about. Special
thanks to Reva who bought $1,170
worth of t-shirts.
We hope to see you all next year.
Thank you,

1 would also like to thank all the
drummers and singers who held a
beautiful service.
Again please forgive me fortaking
so long, getting this letter out as
some of you may know it has now
been two years since we lost our
beloved mother, which was during
my little Betty Lou's Birthday (who
just turned 17) and is still my baby
girl, although she is a beautiful young
lady.
At this time I would like to thank
my Dad, Frank C. Lucio and my
sister Esther Lucio for their love and
support and prayers. I would also
like to take this time to thank my
sister- and brother-in-law Mr. and
Mrs. John G. Holum. I would also
like to thank Levi, Chct, Tiger and
Marella & Robert and Lillie (Ittah)
for (heir love and prayers and for
sharing their picture of the original
Magpie Basketball players picture. I
would like to thank my daughters for
being patient with me, Eva (Babes)
and Betty Lou (Boopers) and for
being helpful and caring for their
brothers Charles Ralph, and Louis
Frank and for Joseph Queahpama
Tewee, whom I love and appreciate
trying to understand what was going
on.
Louis Frank Tewee, Sr. for being
supportive and understanding why I
just loaded-up all my children and
left, little knowing at how long I
would be gone.
Again, please forgive me for
taking so long at getting this letter
out.
If I have forgotten or left someone
out please try and understand I will
remember you during our fathers
memorial, which I will acknowledge
you then. Again, please accept this
letter with love and respect to all.

Go ahead with
adoption
election
To the editor,
First of all that article by Mr.
Wallulatum was his own and not the
Tribal Council's and I cannot agree
with any of his views except that his
questioning of the Constitution and
By-Laws. However, as long as I have
sat in this chamber, I have never seen
the residence clause work on the
automatic enrollments except in some
cases.
The Tribal Council role is to call
for the vote of the people and let the
people decide who should be
enrolled. His opinion should have
been in the editorial page with Big
Rat or Big Rat's opinion should have
been on the front page. My personal
opinion is to go ahead with this
election then see if the people want
to change. I have other ideas but they
are too long to into now.
On our officers of the Council, the
chairman took over the job
responsibility for what the
Constitution and By-Laws call for
and I would like to point out that he
was appointed to the Vice Chairman
by acclamation.
The Council did not look at the
Vice Chairman by sex but as a person
we were comfortable with and felt
that she would be responsible to
Tribal Council should the Chairman
be tardy or absent.
