Miss Culler is Canadian and her Visa expired, she is returning to British Columbia, Canada. During the government strike her paperwork was not processed so her visa was not renewed. Culler was honored as one of the many teachers who pulled together to sec that children made it home safe during the flood in February. All the teachers rode buses with the children to their homes. They wanted to be sure their parents or someone was there waiting for them. For many teachers this is the first time ever leaving the Campus area and going into the community. Teachers are now beginning to participate in community gatherings and activities to learn w hat the Warm Springs people are about. By doing this they feel they are getting a better understanding of where the children come from and what their environment is outside of school. The children's cultural upbringing makes a difference in their behavior at school. The community involvement helps the teachers understand that in the children. Not only have the teachers come together during the flood but during the illness of Dawn Smith. At the end of the year each teacher will be recognized for their commitment to the school and children. May 3, 1996 will always be remembered by all fourth graders of the Warm Springs Elementary School, because on this day they witnessed a tree planted in their memory of their last year in the Warm Springs school. School Principal Dawn Smith was also at hand to assist and be with the kids on this memorable day. The Lund tree was donated by Kah-Nee-Ta Resort and will be an annual event for all 4th grade students here at Warm Springs Elementary. According to Tom Hopper, Kah-Nee-ta Resort grounds employee, the tree was donated to them by PGE and will grow about 10 to 12 inches a year and will provide plenty of shade in years to come. A big thank you goes out to Francisco and Mark who helped dig the hole and also another huge thank you to PGE and Kah-Nee-Ta Resort for the donation of the tree from all the 1996 Warm Springs fourth graders. "According to interpreter Teresa Nakajima, the series began 13 years ago and parts of the series have been filmed in five other locations on the Warm Springs Reservation. The producer Mr. Kamata, really likes this area and would like to continue to come back ind film in the future for parts in the series. Mr. Kamata and the entire film crew have enjoyed coming to Warm Spring in the past because of the warm welcome they've gotten. In the scene shot near Shitike Creek, two young boys (Haruhiko Kato and Ryu Nakamura) are seen on horse back coming down a hill delivering two horses to a ranch. The two boys and another man (Ikko Furuya) are the main actors. The two boys are on a journey to find their real father (Ikko Furuya) who they have not seen since they were very young. From Warm Springs, the Fuji Film crew will head to Bend, John Day, Portland and back to Japan. It's uncertain of when, if ever this part of the series will appear in the United States. fr , VI..
