Is it alway's like that? When
ever the Indians are to get some
money where they couiu
become self-sustaining in their
own community the non-Indians
want to put a stop to it.
Yep! It goes clelar back to
when the treaties were signed
with all the Indian tribes across
the country. The Government
agreed to be responsible for all
the tribes across the country if
they agreed to move and live on
a reservation. They would build
hospitals, schools, homes and
other necessities for them to
make a living on the reservation.
Take the great Columbia River,
where the Indians lived for years
and years before the Whiteman
came to this country .The plan worked very well in the begenning
as the non-Indians were able to get all that fertile lands for
themselves. .
When they saw all that good buttom land for farming and
things like that, they wanted that land so they looked at a pile of
and some timbered land where they said the Indians would have
to move and thats herre in Warm Springs.
Time passes and timber became one of the leading products
across the country and the.Indians were beginning to prosper
from all this worthless land which put all the non-Indians on an
uproar. The Non-Indians tried everyway to get that land from the
Indians. Finally in the olden day's they came up with a plan
called, "Termination." With this plan they would buy out all the
Indian Reservations and they would have to live in the mainstream
like the rest of the citizens across the country.
Well, it fooled some who game up their reservations for a few
bucks, thus losing all their mineral and other rights of wards of
the government, which was a disaster because they had no more
righs as an Indian tribe. There were some who wouldn't fall for
the Termination plsn and fought to hold on to the reservation and
all the rights which was wise move.
Here in Warm Springs we experienced the bout with
Termination, but our elders ould not give in to where we kept our
reservation in tact. Developing a lot of our own industries to the
point where we could have gone on to be self supporting if
necessary. Our biggest income source was from the timber,
which went well enough to whare it was decided to give
everyone a per-capita payment each month. From this the talk
around the Non-Indian communities was, the Indians don't have
to work because the Government gives them checks everymonth.
This isn't so, all the income we receive is from our own funds.
Today the Indian tribes have ventured into another project in
Indian Country and thats in, "Gaming." Since some Indian tribes
have been very successful back east the gaming has spread
across Indian country to where Indian reservations could almost
be self sustaining, and now the Non-Indian. Now the Non-Indian
population is trying to put a halt to the gaming on Indian lands.
With the budget cuts are so bad they are almost cutting the Indian
Tribes funding right out and so what alternative do we have?
The Indians have made gaming work for their lively hood and
now the Whiteman is trying to find a way to stop this. He feels
his hand is not in the same pocket with all the Indians to get some
of that extra change. AHH-NAHH-Chi-TOON ! ! !

putme through college, I had a good position with this big firm.
My wife wanted me to make more money so I got into investments.
She spent more than I could earn and busted me. Finally a guy
ran off with my wife so here I am drinking cheap wine.
Tom: "Gulp," Maybe I'm the guy who ren off with your wife."

Grief isn't always about dying

Longhousc? I thought it was very
well done. Eightball and Wilson make
a great team. The behind the scene
action was wonderful to watch. The
kitchen folk putting on great meals,
Police, Fircmcdics, IHS, Utilities in
the cleaning, moving and repairing
of things. They also were making the
fried bread to boot. This was a great
Warm Springs team effort. And judg
ing by the laughter and talk this great
event is here to stay for the Seniors of

Or, shock, despair, and recovery? Or
how about numbness, pining, depres
sion and recovery? Each of these arc
given by some very smart doctors as
the process of going through grief.
GRIEF from my dictionary: sorrow,
mental distress caused by affliction
or loss, to fail, woe, affliction, tribu
lation, sadness, melancholy, trial,
suffering. Grief is not just someone
dying. It is an event that comes and
grabs a part of our life and pulls hard.
It will take us into different direc
tions of life. It will pull us a part. It
will cause us to become stronger.
Grief is a time to know that wc can
not be in control of our life at all
times. We need somconc.we need
family and friends who will listen to
us in our pain. And in the deep time
of pain we need our God. Matthew
5:4 "Those who mourn are fortu
nate! For they shall be comforted"
Grief causes us to turn to the Lord
and to grow into the image of Christ.
Our God was afflicted and suffered
too. Remember the word says "shall
be comforted" not maybe, or
somctimes...shaII. See you in church.

The extraordinary facts is that Mr.
Matthews has his Oregon State Bar
and has distributed many services to
the community of Warm Snnngs and
the Tribal Court as the Clnef Pros
ecutor for five years. Mr. Matthews
has gone beyond extent in his job
working along with the General
Manager of Public Safety, at request
doing civil work.
I had the opportunity to work side
by side with Mr. Matthews working
with victims of several different

I have known and worked with
Mark Matthews for 4 12 years and
during this period of time he has
always shown me that he is a hard
and conscientious worker, fair and
honest with everyone he deals with
and committed to justice. Mark is
very concerned about our judicial
system and the way that it operates.
He has always been a staunch sup
porter of getting criminals off the
streets and has ran into road blocks
along the way. In a different atmo
sphere such as Circuit Court Judge,
Mark will do an excellent job of
seeing justice served. I believe that
Jefferson and Crook counties would
benefit from having a fresh perspec
tive. So I urge you, the voters to join
with me and vote for Mark Matthews
and let's have a change.

To the editor.
V When I announced for Circuit
Judge in March I knew most observ
ers felt the odds were against me as I
prepared to challenge the longtime
incumbent.
Talking with Warm Springs vot
ers in these few weeks the one theme
I hear repeated again and again is:
"It's time for a change!"
My campaign is about our future,
not about the past.
Those voters that feel our judicial
system is doing enough to protect
our families, seniors and children
from the growing dangers of crime
can vote for six more years of the
status quo.
Those voters that feel we can do
more and need a change in direction
can cast their vote for Mark
Matthews.
As a criminal prosecutor, I felt
that our judicial system needs to be
more responsive to crime victims
and their families. As supervisor of
the Victim's Assistance Program at
