Both of her grandfathers Chief Patahanashat Queahpama and Chief Simtustus were Warm Springs tribal members as were her mother Minnie Simtustus and father Frank Queahpama Sr. All were born and buried on the reservation. But Hazel, whose Indian name is Pasali, after her great, great-grandmother, was born on the Yakama reservation when her mother and father were at White Swan. Her parents were encouraged by Olncy relatives over there to reg ister Hazel into the Yakama Tribe, even though she is 1516 Wyam (Warm Springs Tribe) and 116 Umatilla. At the age of six, Hazel and her parents moved back to Warm Springs onto the Simtustus home site of her grandfather where she has lived ever since. Most of her adult life, Hazel has wanted to become a member of the Warm Springs Tribe to be joined with her relatives. Now, with the help of Lenora Starr of Vital Statis tics and Tribal Council, she has fi nally been able to attain her goal. One of our oldest elders born De cember 3, 1906 has become one of the Warm Springs newest members in January 1996. A good beginning for the year 1996 for Pasali and truly a time of celebration! Some are needed at the Village, the Lodge and at the Casino. Must have all appropriate licenses. The Rate is $1 Ofor single day booths and $30 for multiple day booths. Unfortunately, throughout the school year there are times when students are more susceptible to illness and stay home to recuperate. If your child is not ready to fully participate in the school day, they should stay at home that extra day. Students and teachers need their recess break. By OEA contract teach ers are allowed two 15 minute breaks and a one-half hour lunch break which are duty free. Mrs. Smith, the princi-' pal, will call inside recess when weather conditions cause it to be too uncomfortable for all students out side. Remember to send your child with appropriate clothing given the weather conditions. Interested people sought Museum At Warm Springs Ex hibits Coordinator Roxanne Casey is forming a local committee of inter ested tribal members and other indi viduals to begin the planning for a School of Arts in Warm Springs. The Warm Springs School of Arts will be a completely separated entity from The Museum and is envisioned of being dedicated to serve both young and old, who are interested in arts. Ctr; Myrtle Snowden 553-3257 King Artists receive WESTAF awards The Western States Arts Federa tion (WESTAF) announced today that five traditional fold artists in the West are recipients of technical as sistance and funding awards that will help them improve their abilities to market themselves. The awards were made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Fold and Traditional Arts Program. The recipients are Amauta, a Latin-American musical group from Law Vegas; Rebecca Etukeok, a Tlingit drum maker from near Fairbanks; Max Godfrey, a cowboy rawhide braider and poet from Riv erside, Utah; Pat Courtney Gold, a Wasco Indian basket maker from Scappoose and Jeronimo Lozano, a Peruvian retablo maker from Salt Lake City. Each of the five recipients will work closely with a consultant who will help them evaluate their promo tional needs, then they will receive $400 to help produce promotional; materials. "We are pleased to be ale to help traditional artists compete in the; marketplace through these awards.; We hope that through this assistance; more community-based fold artists; will be able to share their work with ; the world," said Elaine Thatcher,' WESTAF Folk Arts Program Direc-; tor. 5 Howlak Tichum Donovan R. Danzuka Apologies I apologize for driving under the influence and endangering other people's lives. Charles Dick I am writing this letter to my people of Warm Springs to apolo gize. On December 2, 1 was found to be poaching. I went to court on January 26 and I was convicted of hunting out of season. And I apologize for this. William J. Clements Donovan R. Danzuka, age 26, died January 31, 1996 as a result of an automobile accident on the County Line Road off of Highway 26. Danzuka was born November 2, 1969 to Donald Doyle & Marjorie (Gunnier) Burns at Portland, OR. He was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs. He attended schools in Warm Springs and Madras. He was an enrolled member of the Con federated Tribes of Warm Springs. J To the community, justice system and people of Warm Springs, I'm sorry for making a bad deci sion to not only put the community in danger, but my own life as well by committing an unlawful offense by drinking alcohol then drive automo bile while intoxicated. Known as DUII, not only did I commit the crime but also paying consequences by doing time to have me realize, not thinking about what I done is danger ous. The positive side of this is I'm working towards a better life for myself cause I will be rewarded after my work is done. Please accept this apology. Lowell Quinn Cemetery. Marena Miller Marena Miller passed away Feb ruary 2, 1996 at her home in Warm Springs due to natural causes. She was 80 years old. Mrs. Miller was born October 10, Gibson Lawrence Danzuka. Also surviving are sister, Donetta Danzuka j of Canada and brother, Victor Smith, j Jr. of Warm Springs. Preceding him in death are his mother, Marjorie, who died in 1981 ; and stepfather, Victor Smith, Sr. who; passed away in 1995. ; Dressing ceremonies were held; Friday, February 2, at 2 p.m. at the; Bel-Air Colonial Chapel then was; transported to the Agency Longhouse; for overnight services. Funeral ser-; vices were held February 3, at 10; a.m. at the Warm Springs Baptist;. Church. Burial was at the Agency 1915 to Charlie and Annie (Tuckta) Frank in Warm Springs. She was an enrolled member of the Confeder ated Tribes of Warm Springs. She loved children and enjoyed taking care of them. She enjoyed beadwork, making yarn belts and crossword puzzles. She was also a memberof the Warm Springs Shaker Church. Survivors include her children, Marilyn Wagner, Ramona Tanewasha, Doris Miller and Norma Miller of Warm Springs. Brothers, Delbert, Jacob and Alvis Frank, and Olney Patt, sisters, Lydian Murphy and Margaret Suppah, along with 21 . grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death are hus band Floyd Miller, died 1973; broth ers Atkins and Thodore Frank, and William Patt, sisters Nora Frank and Minnie Patt, children Miles, Myra and Larry Miller and grandson Jaime Miller who died in 1995. Dressing ceremonies were held Saturday, February 3 at 3 p.m at the" Agency Longhouse. Overnight seN vices followed with Louise Hellori officiating. Burial was Monday, Fer ruary 5, 1996 at 9 a m. at the Dry Creek Cemetary in Warm Springs. - I I I
