"We've flown nearly 4,000 pa tients during our tenure, our mem bership program enjoys the strength of over 14,000 household and busi ness members and we're building a new hangaroffice facility," Bartley says. "But most importantly, in the ten-plus years we've flow, we've never had an accident or an incident. Flying safe has always been our goal.'' Back in 1985, when Air Life be gan, all "expert" signs pointed to failure; it was said than an air ambu lance service would not be cost ef fective over such a sparsely popu lated yet large geographical area. But studies indicated that people living east of the Cascades faced a two-and-a-half times greater chance of dying in an accident than those living west of the mountains. The main reason had to do with patient trans portation times; thus, Air Life was born. The need is apparent; in just over 10 years, Air Life has logged over 7,000 hours of flight time, this trans- Court Notices- Ramona Smith Petitioner Warm Springs tribal member seeking employment. In addition to its life-saving mis sions aboard the Bell 222 helicopter and Cessna fixed-wing aircraft, Air Life contributes to community edu cation as well. Child care seat safety clinics have been extremely success ful in various communities, and the flight team also takes time to train groups in preparing patients for air transport. "Air Life enjoys its success be cause of so many supporting agen cies and concerned citizens," Bartley says. ""For example, local ground ambulance crews, paramedics, fire departments and first responders provide the necessary care to people facing illness or accidents, prior to Air Life's arrival. Also, they help us secure a safe landing zone; without their cooperation and teamwork, we couldn't function." Additionally, over 100 Air Life volunteers donate their time and tal ents in outlying areas. Within the 70,000 square-mile service area, volunteers provide necessary infor mation and act as goodwill ambassa dors for the service. "Air Life will continue to give back to the community in 1 996 via its educational programs and other special projects," Bartley says. "This is a community effort-type program, and we so appreciate the public's support." For more information about Air Life or its membership program, call 541-385-6305 or 1-800-522-2828.
