Head Start Mini Powwow

ECE Bucks can be used to buy
various items at the ECE Bucks Store.
The ECE Bucks store is located in
the front office area, contact Versa
Smith or Suzie Moody when you are
ready to spend your ECE Bucks
earnings.
The ECE Bucks has been
successful through the donations of
parents, staff, and local community
businesses. The program is
continuing to seek more donations,
so that this project can continue it's
success. Thank you all for your
donations.
A letter to parents
Dear Parents:
We are thankful for the Early
Childhood Education Center being
available to us for another year.
For our employment and other
parent responsibilities, the ECE has
helped make this possible. To
continue an ECE service as it has in
the past, us parents, must become
involved with ECE, more than
bringing your loving children to ECE
and picking them up after work and
other parent responsibilities.
We have an ECE PARENT CLUB
that meets periodically and discuss
fund raising ideas and other ECE
concerns. We need more parents to
become involved. This is necessary
for all the children that attend ECE..
For the love of our children we
are planning a Valentine's Bake Sale.
Watch for flyers on the event and
attend our next meeting, January 3 1 ,
1996,5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m..

The program would like to extend
their appreciation to the Culture and

A Louse in the House:
Head lice are infesting Oregon's
school age children and resisting
extinction.
Call it the big itch.
For whatever reason, Oregon is
having a banner year for head lice. ;
Not only are cases increasing, but
parents say the usual remedies do not
always work, prompting talk about a
drug-resistant "super-louse."
Things are so bad that even
Portland School Superintendent Jack
Bierwirth found himself looking for '
nits - lice eggs - in his kids hair. ,
"It's a frustrating problem,"
Bierwirth said. "Never again will I -even
for a second - have the feeling
of impatience and want to tell parents,
"Just go home and take care of it."
There have been 1,500 reported
cases of lice this school year in nine
Portland metro districts, said Dee
Bauer, the director of school health
services in Multnomah County.
That's an increase from 1,000 during
the same period last year and 500 the
year before, she said.
Elsewhere, infestations are spotty.
Bend and the North Clackamas
District, for example, report nothing
out of the ordinary. But Beaverton
has a problem, and so does Eugene.

Overall, said Karen R. Stefonek,
a nurse epidemiologist with the
Oregon Health Division, the lice
problem seems to be getting worse,
judging from the calls to her office.
Because the division keeps no
statistics on it, the evidence is mostly
anecdotal, she said.
ECE understands that parents
experience grief, panic and distress.
When they are contacted and notified
of their children having been found
with Head licenits.
The program procedures are as
followed:
All ECE classrooms do routine
head checks on all children on
Mondays and Fridays. Head checks
may also be done if staff observes a
child frequently scratching their scalp
or if the child complains of itchiness.
As a certified Child Care
Preschool Facility, ECE complies
with State requirements for the
exclusion of children with
communicable diseases. Head Lice
Nits falls in the category.
1)A child with Head Lice andor
nits will be excluded by an ECE
program supervisor, pod supervisor,
ParentHealth Coordinator or Social
Service Coordinator. Parents
Guardians will be contacted and
expected to pick up their child right
away. The exclusion form will be
attached to a hand out and given to
the parentguardian upon arrival.
Children with head licenits will
be excluded from ECE until they
have received treatment and no
evidence of lice or nits in their hair
can be found. Children can be
readmitted by an ECE program
supervisor, pod supervisor, the
ParentHealth coordinator or Social
Service coordinator. The signed
readmittance form should be returned
to the child's classroom staff so they
know the child has been checked.
2) The second time a child is
excluded for Head LiceNits a
suspension warning notice will be
attached to the exclusion form along
with another handout.
3) Each third time a child is
excluded for Head LiceNits, within
a six (6) month period, a suspension
notice will be attached to the
exclusion form and a handout A

On Saturday January 20,
retirement dinner was held at Kah-Nee-Ta
vacation Resort for Bob
Smith, who has served eleven years
as a volunteer for the Fire and Safety
department in the Warm Springs
community. Smith, and his wife
Gloria, reside in the Kah-Nec-Ta
Hamlets area where he has responded
for medical and fire calls many times
if not on a daily basis.
"The staff at Fire and Safety are
sad to see him go because of his
dedication to the community and to
the department. Things will not be
the same without him," says Fire
Chief Raneva Dowty. Whenever

kind, Dowty says you could bet
money that Bob Smith would respond
no matter what time of the day oi
night it was or what the weather was
doing. "In our line of work we don't
see too many people like Smith, A
person that would just volunteer their
time to help others in need is rare
indeed," says Dowty. He will be
missed a great deal by many.
In addition to the retirement
dinner, Smith was given awards of
appreciation for the many years he
has given and served as a volunteei
here in our community and the Kali
Nee-Ta area.
