Speed limit 55 or 75? There is a
lot of controversy over the speed
limit today since there was a bill
passed to raise the speed limits across
the country. Well no matter what
the law says there will always be
those who travel 85 mph, especially
on the freeways.
Oregon's speed laws differ, de
pending on where you are driving
and the type of vehicle you are
driving. The Oregon law says, "If
you drive at a speed that is unsafe
for existing conditions in any area,
you may be given a ticket for violat
ing the basic rule. The basic rule
says you must drive at a speed that
is reasonable and prudent at all times.
The basic rule applies on all streets
and highways. To obey the basic
rule, you need to think about the other traffic, the surface and width of the
road, dangers at intersections, weather, visibility and any other conditions
that could effect safety and your driving speed. You can violate the basic
rule even though you are driving slower than a designated speed or posted
speed if a lower speed is needed for safety.
The federal maximum speed limit is 55 mph. This limit applies on the
urban interstate and in other rural locations except on the rural interstate I
84 and 1-5. On the rural interstate, the limit is 65 miles per hour unless a sign
is posted for a lower speed.
At all indications Oregon will stick with the 55 mph unless otherwise
posted along the highways where the basic rule applies. So if a person drives
at 60 or 65 and has his vehicle at a controllable state and obeys all the basic
rule conditions he is not liable for a speeding ticket. But if he drives 60 or
65 mph recklessly and not watching other traffic he is in violation of the
basic rule.
Around here those big 1 8 wheeler rigs are abig problem and have caused
many car accidents in the past. They travel a such high rate of speed and get
away with it here on Highway 26. When an Indian drives to Madras he sure
is watched and is stopped for any excuse there is. And now that the
Hispanics are coming into the area they are a big target for the cops around
here in Central Oregon.
At diversity meetings I've heard cops say they don't really know who
is driving a vehicle when they stop them and claim that they are not stopping
a car because it is a Native American or a Hispanic. You drive along with
someone who has a scanner you can hear the cops in town, "Here comes
a car load of Native Americans, better keep an eye on that car. It's a ...so
and ..so kind of car. Or if a car load of Hispanics are on the road they keep
an eye out for them.
Yep! The only way they can be truthful is they don't know who the
Native American is or who the Hispanic is but yet they know its a minority
car.
What we need is a freeway from the top of the grade west of Warm
Springs clear through Bend, this would include Madras and Redmond. The
traffic sure has improved since they put a freeway between Redmond and
Bend. Just think what the traffic would be like if they didn't improve that
stretch of road..
The speed signs should be increased between Bend and Burns because
there isn't anything there at all and a driver is able to keep his car under
control at all times with out hampering other motorists.
The traffic sure gets heavy from Portland on highway 26, and is getting
worse all the time. Especially on holidays when people go out for weekend
trips . By the year 2010 we will really need freeways around here and that's
not very long way off.
Well in the mean time we will just have to sit back and watch what goes
on especially since the Republican Party has taken control of the reigns of
the country. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOO ! ! !

and others, I must admit those things
publicly if I ever expect myself to

The middle of January already. Hey,
I was listening to this great tape the
other day. It said that any addiction,
any addiction was a terminal disease.
That means if you don't stop using
and abusing you will DIE. Yet addic
tion is one of the few terminal dis
eases that has a path to healing. You
will die yet you will live. It sounds a
little like the Bible. What is the path
to life?? The path from addiction is a
team effort of you and your coun
selor, you and your pastor, you and
your support group, you and you,
you and your God. Some miracles
are just plain hard work. The team is
here in Warm Springs. Come get a
miracle and discover life.

Mine was OK way down this way
in the Duck City, Eugene, Oregon.
It's that time of the year to make
resol utions for ourselves. We should
also give many thanks for all the
good that has happened to us in the
year that has passed.
We should all look at the positive
side in our life. I know there were
many DUIIs this past year in 1995,
but you should all be thankful that
you live through it and didn't have an
alcohol related automobile accident.
There may be many who are in
jails locked up for something that
has to do with alcohol but look at the
positive side of it: You're not buried
under the ground six feet or so.
We should all make a resolutior
for ourselves in our new year ol
1996.
We, who are alive, should be very
grateful that we live through the yeai
of 1995.
We can have our new year be
good for us if we all make and have
resolutions for ourselves.
