Warm Springs Family Planning
Clinic wants to remind everyone that
we are still situated in the basement
of the Vern Jackson home. The clinic
is open every Tuesday afternoon from
2 to 4:30 p.m. and services are avail
able to Tribal members and non
Tribal residents.
We continue to offer a wide vari
ety of services, including Family
Planning exams, STD exams for men
and women, birth control dispensing
and counseling, Emergency contra
ception and anonymous or confiden
tial HIVAIDS testing.
This is a cooperative effort be
tween the Confederated Tribes of
Warm Springs and Jefferson County
Health Department, but all services
are completely confidential. Please

Oregon Trout needs volunteers
Please join other Oregon Trout ball caphat and a raincoat. Leather
volunteers on a fence building
project. Following is a list of corre
sponding dates, times and number of
volunteers needed for each day.

Volunteers will be building barbed
wire fence. Each volunteer should

Mid-Columbia River Powwow set for Oct. 27-29
Museum at Warm Springs conducting membership drive
The Museum At Warm Springs is
conducting a membership drive to
bolster support for the award winning
facility that houses many of the
treasures of the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs.
"The local community is one of
the audiences we have targeted to
encourage becoming members of The
Museum," said Dora Goudy,
Museum Development Officer. The
benefits are many, including
discounts in The Museum's Gift Shop
and invitations to special exhibits,
classes, performances and hosted
receptions for artists and scholars,
she said.
'"Baby Carriers of the Plateau', is
our newest changing exhibit where
there are beautiful pieces of work
displayed," she said.
The Museum offers educational
programs throughout the year
including the Living Traditions
program during the summer months.
Currently Antoinette Queahpama is
teachi ng a Cedar Root Basket Making
Class that has had tremendous interest
and response.
On November 17, 1995, the
Portland Opera will give two
performances of "An American
Magic Flute", an event with a Native
American theme geared especially
for children.
"The Museum offers a broad array
of events for you to select from
throughout the year," Goudy
continued. "It is a way for you to
become involved and to appreciate
and support the arts of the community.
"The Museum was once only a
dream for the people of Warm Springs
and now it is a dream come true,"
Goudy said. She added there are many
treasures stored at The Museum and
each has stories that go with it. "It
offers a rare and educational
opportunity for people of all ages to
learn form the tribal perspective, its
history, traditions and culture.
"A goal of The Museum is to
make it the finest cultural institution
in the world and we invite your
support to become a member and
join our quest to achieve that goal,"
Goudy said.
Memberships start at $25 for
senior citizens and students; $35 for
individuals; $45 for families, along
with other membership options.

Matilda Mitchell
Eighty-nine year old Matilda
Mitchell of Simnasho, Oregon
passed away October 17, 1995 at
the home of her daughter in Portland
due to natural causes. She was born
July 4, 1906 in Simnasho to Frank
and Ski-eampt (Swan) Queahpama,
Sr.
She married Louis Mitchell on
December 11, 1925.
Matilda was a lifetime member
of the Simnasho community. She
was an elder and a highly respected
woman in the Pacific Northwest.
She was very knowledgeable in
traditional Indian ways including
crafts, medicines, folklore, rituals
and food. She is the daughter of
Chief Queahpama and as such
assumed many responsibilities of a
daughter of a chief. She officiated
at many traditional Longhouse
rituals. She appeared in many
posters and brochures to promote
her heritage. She was an enrolled
memberof the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs and served on
many of their committees.
Survivors include her children;
Pierson Mitchell, Patrick Mitchell,
ameson Mitchell, Freda
Wallulatum, Roma Jean Joe all of
Warm Springs and Darlene Foster
ot Milwaukie. Sisters; Nettie
Shawaway and Sylvia Wallulatum
of Warm Springs. She has
numerous grandchildren and great
grandchildren. She was proceded
in death by her husband Louis,
daughters; June and Violet
Mitchell. Also preceding her were
sisters; May Bruno John and
Catherine Queahpama, brothers;
Oscar Queahpama and Clayton
Queahpama.
An all denominational Prayer
Service was held Wednesday,
October 18, at Bel-Air Colonial
Funeral Home Chapel. Dressing
Ceremonies were held Thursday,
October 19, at 4 p.m. at the
Simnasho Longhouse with
overnight services following.
Burial was held Friday morning,
October 20, at sunrise at the
Simnasho Cemetery.
The family suggests Memorial
