..Spilyay Tymoo
E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
The fire season is here upon us
once again and with a pretty good
growth of range grass there could
be some hot fires to warm things up
this summer. Each year we have a
big range fire and last year it was
the LeClaire fire that charred hun
dreds of acres of land, threatened a
lot of home sites on the reservation.
Areas in danger were Wolf Point,
and Sunnyside area in Dry Creek
and even gave Kah-Nee-Ta lodge a
scare burning right down to its bor-';
der lines.
Things we don't like to remem
ber but can't help it was the terrible ;
fire in Colorado where nine crew :
members from the Prineville Hot
Shot, crew lost their lives. That was ' '
a big tragedy, actually there were
14 in all who lost their lives in that blaze and the nine were from Oregon.
Yep! Fighting fires can be a real dangerous task especially when the
wind comes up and changes directions constantly. Things happen so fast
that a person doesn't have time to make any kinds of plans to avoid the
flames to protect himself. A grass fire can bum right across a field in no
time at all and it is pretty hard to out run when there's a little breeze behind
it.. We've had some terrible accidents with grass fires around here one was
at the Kah-Nee-Ta lodge as crew members went down the hill to fight the
fire when the wind suddenly changed and caught the men in the flames..
You can see as the grass fire goes up hill the flames stretch out to be 50 feet
some times and everything goes up in smoke in its path.
With the fairly moist summer we have some pretty good stands of grass
in the hills that could burn pretty fast if started. We have had some
lightening storms but luckily we have had some pretty heavy rain falls
putting the fires out.
Conditioning one's self is very important to be a member of the Hot
Shot crew. A person must be able to with stand a lot of walking and running
as a member of the Hot Shot Crews. Those high hills can be very steep to
climb and the trails can be long and winding where it does prove a person
must be in good condition in order to keep up with the rest of the crew.
In the olden days it was a must to hike into the hills with a back pack and
bedroll to fight fires as there were no roads like there are today. Also no
helicopters to take people into the rugged areas where the fires usually are.
Today there are so many logging roads all over the country where there is
not much hiking to be done anymore. Like a drive up fire fighting. "Huh".
POCAHONTAS
The animated movie by Disney Productions has stirred quite a contro
versy among many Indian Tribes across the nation. There are some people
who feel that the way Pocahontas appears is not the real Indian..
Speaking of Pocahontas, I was asked the question at the Native
American Journalists Association (NAJA) annual convention. The ques
tion: "Do you think the image of Pocahontas is appropriate of the Native
American Women?"
My answer was, "Yes, Why not, this brings out the beauty of the Indian
people." I went on to say, "I would rather see that than some over-weight
woman." I went on to say, "There are a lot of over-weight women who run
for princess at the pow-wows, which makes me feel that these should be
called talent shows and not beauty contests."
"Pocahontas," After-all it's just an animated movie, might as well go
for it. Might as well have the best for once and not be the bad Indian.
Because in most movies the Indians are the bad guys. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOONM!

Warm Springs
Hello from Pastor Rick,
Came home from a trip last week.
I went to California to see my family.
I spent five days doing work projects
at my mother's home. My family
lives in.San Jose, California. ...Yes, I
grew-up learning how to dive under
tables because of earthquakes...For
so long my world has been the
community of Warm Springs.
Suddenly, to be in another Safeway
store where the price of fresh corn is
written in five different languages.
WOW, talk about brain
expanding... Your life is pushed open
Help dying boy's
Dear Friend,
I hate chain letters, I don ' t believe
in chain letters-Please don't ever
send me CHAIN LETTERS! That
being said, this particular request hit
the soft spot in my heart. I am for
warding this to you and asking you if
you can simply continue the chain or
if you can take the time (which we all
understand), please collect as many
business cards as possible and for
ward them to the address below.
The request comes from the Make-A-Wish
foundation. Seven-year-old
Craig Shergold has a brain tumor and
little time to live. His wish is to have
an entry in the Guinness Book of
Records for the largest collection of
business cards by an individual. This
a relatively minor inconvenience on
our end through which we will help
fulfill a little boy's dream.

Gerbils Stolen
from school
Dear Parents,
If your child came home Friday
evening July 7, 1 995 or SaturdayJuly
8, 1993 with three gerbils and a two
compartment habitat connected by
multi-colored plastic tubes, should
know that they were stolen from my
classroom in a break-in that took
place that weekend.
None of the items were
particularly valuable, but I think we
would all agree that that is not the
point. They were classroom pets that
my students and others in the school
enjoyed watching, playing with and
just being around. We can't do that
anymore.
