'Yep! There were a whole lot of happy people especially those in Europe, when the Allied forces lib erated them along the way. Hitler's forces were defeated all along the front lines as the allied forces were steadily progressing forward on all fronts. Stories say all the people were thankful the U. S. Troops ar rived because they gave them food and shelter. Yep! VE-Day, A day everyone was looking foward to during WWII, and when it finally happened there was Celebrating all over the coun try. Those who can remember those dark dreary days of the WWII, where everything seemed to brighten up when the Germans surrendered to the allies in Europe. For a while it was like a dream, but when the headlines on the news papers, !'Germany Surrenders; War In Europe Ends:" Local GI's started to return home, there was a great time, people dancing and having a great time. How many people can remember the tunes like, Sentimental Journey; I've Heard That Song Before;Sunrise Serenade; Tangerine; Moonlight Serenade; Begin the Beguine; Stardust; Little Brown Jug; That Old Black Magic; and many others also band leaders as Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, and of course Ole Frankie. Today there are just a hand full of people who remember those days of happiness and how great it was for all the GT s to be coming home. : There was still the war in the Pacific Theater going full blast as the troops were taking Island after Island getting ever closer to the mainland of the Japanese Empire. Yep! Now days all the young people just read of all the war stories in the history books and think nothing of what a lot of people went through during them days of the war. Yep! the Flag is America, and many boys put their lives on the line to protect the Stars and Stripes that so many take for granted today. And to think of how people tear the song apart when they sing the Star Spangled Banner during sports affairs, why couldn't they just stick to the regular tune and say the words the way they should be said, for the Land of the Free and the home of the Brave, instead of making a "Dumbo," of themselves. SS SS SS The temporary gaming operation is underway right on schedule. The ribbon cutting ceremonies went on time with all the glorifying talks the doors were opened to the Tribal members at 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. when the the operation was opened to the general public, May 7, 1995. There approximately 150 machines available for the publics use. With all the bright colorful machines beaming away the eager players tried their luck. ; Yep ! The new gaming establishment added more employment here on the reservation. There are some jobs that people need special training in order to fill them. Before the opening there were some quick lessons given to the new staff members from the experienced person nel on hand. There are a lot of ripples that need to be smoothed out before things will work smoothly. At the opening night there was a lot of confusion amidst the whole event. One of the biggest problems now is the parking situation. Something definitely needs to be done to ease the problem. Like they say the customer is always right, and if you want his dollars you'd better treat him right. Rudeness is not the answer in something like this. There is talk of a shuttle service from a parking area where some People would call unsafe. No lights in the parking area or shelter for customers. Now who wants to be out in the dark waiting for a shuttle bus let alone wondering if his car will still be intact when he returns. After all these years the parking was first come bases and all of a sudden room numbers have been painted on each parking space. Who's dumb idea was that? If they want parking elsewhere why don't they open up a valet service for the room customers and open up the parking area for the gaming customers because thats where the dollars are going to be coming from. However no matter what way things go there needs to be a brightly lit parking area that is patrolled by the security regularly, make sure the vehicles are not stripped while in the parking area, or we could end up with a huge room full of idol gaming machines. There are reports already where people were turned away from parking so they left with out entering the establishment never to return. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON ! ! ! YIKES Dear Tribal Council, As a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, I feel com pelled to address a serious matter that affects all tribal members and our future. It has been brought to my atten tion, as well as to others, that on Monday, May 1, 1995, a decision was made to appoint a member of the Tribal Council to the key position of Secretary-Treasurer. That member was given the opportunity to vote. According to the Constitution and By-Laws and normal ethical rules, this should not have happened. It is stated in Article IV Meetings and Procedure, Sec. 6 "No member of the Council shall cast a vote on any ques tion in which he may have a personal pecuniary interest." In considering the duties, authorities and pay as signed to the position of Secretary Treasurer, it is quite clear that pe cuniary interests are being gained with the person selected for this po sition. The Tribal Council has the au thority to make a selection of the Secretary-Treasurer from within or outside its members, however, the decision process was clearly wrong. Legally, morally and ethically, a member should have excused him herself from the entire process if there was a conflict of interest with any of the candidates. I feel that it was a violation of all tribal members' rights and welfare. I ask that this serious matter be corrected so that the tribal members will be ensured fair, con sistent and professional treatment and gain some trust as to how this Tribal Council will make decisions on be half of the people that elected them. Many tribal members have had the opportunity and had to struggle for a higher education in hopes that it would benefit them and the tribal organization and would benefit our community. The younger generation is watching every move that is being made by our leaders, and a very ob vious message that is being deliv ered is that higher education is not considered important or valued by the Tribal council. It is important that every tribal member be aware of tribal decisions and why certain de cisions are made, or if it is for the best interest of all three districts and how it will benefit all membership and the tribal government. Many tribal members are afraid to speak out about their concerns be cause of the fear of backlash and vendettas that seem to haunt them and their families. As three tribes that need to work in unity for all our people this should not happen ac cording to the Constitution and by Laws, we do not need people who misuse their authority because it only holds us back in the long run and hurts our image as outsiders look on. I ask and hope that raising this issue will not be held against me or any memberof my family presently, orin the future. I appreciate the wisdom, concern and support of the Tribal Council, the responsibility for the present welfare and the future success of all the members well being is in your hands. The trust to make good deci sions and act responsibly on behalf of the tribe and the people is also in your hands and I hope and pray the right and honest decisions are being made to benefit all our people and families and not just to satisfy some self interests or special interests. Respectfully submitted, Marie A. Calica Agency District Tribal Member Talking about feelings can help Women's conference helpful To the Editor, I would like to thank the senior citizens program, and especially Judith Charley, for paying for us to attend the Health Promotion event for Wellness and Women VI in Port land recently. I had never gone to anything like this and I got a lot out of it. The workshops gave me the op portunity to get close to my aunt Maxine this is a very important bond for me because I have never been close to her before. Since my husband died five years ago, I have stayed pretty close to home. This proved to be a good trip for me and it was good to get away. I strongly encourage younger people to go to these types of presen tations. The presenters were younger than us it was a real eye-opener. I grew up in the era where women Happy Mother's day to Grandma Millie with love always, Ang, Rees, & Bear, B.J., Cedo, Delly & Liya Bunn, Scotty, TJ, Levi, Bratty Boy, Tre' Rae, Noosh, Gary-Grew, Bang Bang, Boom Boom, AJ, Cynthia, Elizabeth were to be quiet and to do what they were told. I learned to take care of myself it feels good. I can share what I learned with my daughters because they're are in the younger age group. I got a lot of handouts from the University of Oklahoma. They could present here at no charge if we asked. I took workshops that pertained to me, such as healing progress, finding myself again. I'm just now finding out about me. We also learned about abuse, healing, basketry, dream catchers, dancing and drum making. Again, I encourage anyone inter ested to attend these types of work shops. It was very helpful for me and I'm sure it would be for most every one else. Also, the local Women's Wellness conference will be held in Warm Springs in October. Sincerely, Iva Pennington To the editor, People of Warm Springs. My name is Bird and I'm an alcoholic and addict. I just returned from treat ment in Vancouver, WA at Turn around. I was there for 26 day s and to tell you the truth, it was the best 26 days of my life. When I first arrived, I was thinking what rest of you are probably thinking right now, I'm not an alcoholic or addict. You probably think you can quit on your own, but I tried and it was very hard. So I went on using and got into trouble. I went to treatment on my own because I got tired of what was going on in my life. I thought about committing suicide alot of times when I was drunk. While I was there I learned that if I was straight, I would not of thought about suicide. I've lost many friends to suicide, but I now know that if they weren't drunk, they would not have done that to themselves. This is how baffling the disease of alcoholism is. It makes you do things you would not normally do. While I was clean at Turnaround, I hear some one say "Alcohol and drugs are the solution, being sober and not on drugs is the problem". To me, that tells me when you get angry, people go out and drink to try and forget what hap- ' ' f i V '-.,. Until they can't take it no more and that's when people take their own lives to try to get away from the problems, but the problems don ' t go away. It j ust makes it harder on your family and friends. So if you have a problem, don't drink. Try and talk to somebody about how you feel and maybe if you talk out your problems, you won ' t have to go have a beer to drown your sorrows. I know before I got to treatment, it was very hard to talk to people how I felt, so I just went and got drunk. But the same feelings were still there. So I just drank some more to try and forget how I was feeling. I know you probably don't want to talk to any body, but it helps out so try and talk about how you feel maybe you' 11 feel better. Here's a little something I read in the AA Big Book "Don't be afraid to join AA. I once heard people say only Indian are crazy when drunk. If so, AA is full of Indians, join the tribe." So talk to somebody about how you feel, it helps. , You friend, Virgil WindyBoy Be proactive, not reactive To the editor, Hello from Pastor Rick. Wow, I am losing track of time. Today is my birthday. I am now 43 years of age. I am supposed to ha ve a mid-life crisis,, if that is true then mid-life should have been during my late thirties. I am six years late, what has happened to time? Time is important to me, yet I do find ways of wasting time. I need to be more proactive and less reac tive. Proactive means take some time to think about tomorrow. Reactive means let tomorrow hit you in the face when it comes to you. I was for a time young enough to handle a reactive life, but now I am a step slower and my bones creak when I walk. Maybe that is one of the gifts from God. A sign of wisdom and maturity. NO, not the creaking bones. To be proactive with life. To think about tomorrow. A tomorrow for myself, my family, my community. With time in the hands of God, what do you do to have a life? Your prayer to God about your tomorrow. You believe in the presence of the Lord in your today and your tomorrow. Instead of trying to hold on to life. Hoping that nothing will change, squeeze the hand of God and walk down the path of time together. Finally, we are having a song night...May 20th. Saturday.
