VFW news
Our post is hosting the quarterly
district 10 meeting at the Agency
Longhouse on Saturday April 29,
1995 at 12 noon.
We'll be starting with the general
gathering for lunch, after which we
will be proceeding the election of
district officers for the coming year.
This is the first time in quite a
while we've hosted and we're urging
all VFW members to attend and meet
with members of posts throughout
Central Oregon.

Scott receives
WSCP award
Warm Springs Composite Prod
ucts recently announced that Melvin
Scott, Sr. was selected employee of
the month for March.
Scott was selected for the fol
lowing criteria: safety in the work
place, quality of work, production
quantity, attendance, personal ini
tiative, attitude and cooperation with
fellow employee, lead people,
Supervisors and Managers.
COBRA offers
training
Central Oregon Battering and
Rape Alliance (COBRA) will be of
fering training in Madras at the CO
BRA office at 9 1 SE D St on May 5,
6 and 7. Persons interested in being a
COBRA volunteer or a COBRA safe
home provider will need to attend the
training. The training lasts approxi
mately 1 8 hours and will start Friday
from 6 to 9 p.m. and continue on
Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m.

The following letter was submitted to
Spilyay for reprinting by a "con
cerned mother, gramma and great
grandmother". To the Editor,
Should the spoken laws that gov
erned a respectful, functional, sober
nation be applied to a drinking, dys
functional tribal people?
Should we teach the children to
respect their elders, even if it's the
elders who make alcohol and child
neglect a tradition? How many gen
erations of alcoholics will it take
before alcohol becomes a part of our
tradition? Or is it already?
When did the children stop being
gifts from the creator and start being
burdens? And how much more of a
burden will they become when wel
fare goes the way of the buffalo?
In the days of the braids and buf
falo, old age didn't automatically
ensure respect. Respect was given to
a person because of their lifelong
accumulation of knowledge, their
generosity and courage, and above
all, their wisdom that would help
ensure the survival of the future gen
erations.
Respect is an action that shows
others how much they mean to you.
It lets people know how vital they
were and how important they still
are.
Why should we listen to these
elders when they profess to know
everything, yet they didn't' have the
courage to do anything when they
were our age. Maybe because of ad
dictions or other things they never
earned the respect they now seek.
Alcohol has taken so much from
us, for so long. It's even hard to
imagine a world without it. It's scary
to hear about FASFAE babies born
to mothers who didn't drink, but the
grandmothers and great-grandmothers
who did.
When do we as a nation start to
make these mothers accountable for
this extreme case of child abuse?
Where are all those promises that
were made about taking care of the
children? Are they all laying on the
council chamber's floor, broken?
What good are the laws that charge
women who are pregnant and drink
with child abuse, when they're not
enforced? How do you justify a
woman who has five children with
FASFAE? I can't unless someone
paid them good money. Hm?
Banishment and not prison time
would do more to get rid of bootleg
gers and pushers. If someone wants
to hurt the people with these sub
stances why should we allow them to
live here?
If someone is always getting ar
rested for liquor violations, why not
banish them for a year? It's obvious
they don't care about their families
so why not give their families a break
from them.
Hard times call for hard core les
sons. Maybe if enough of us pro
moted and supported sobriety we
could get out youth back. And with
them will come a sober future.
A wise man said, "I would rather
have 100 sober people in my tribe
than a million drunk ones." Our
strength comes from our sobriety and
not in numbers.

Eight Annual Reservation Relay set for May 6
The 8th Annual Reservation Relay
is scheduled for Saturday, May 6,
1 995 at the Kah-Nee-Ta Resort, 9:00
a.m. (staggered times for teams with
a predicted eight hours or more-7:30
a.m.).
The course will be 58 miles to
begin and end at the Kah-Nee-Ta
Village, some tough legs along the
course. Most of the course is very
simple with rolling hills and a lot of
flat surfaces. The first third will be
on pavement, the second third on
gravel and the last third on pavement
gravel combination. A lot of scenic
beauty will be seen along the course.
Teams will consist of five runners
each, except Juniors who may use
seven. All teams will alternate legs
of 4.0 miles (youth 3.0) each.
Exchange points will be marked
clearly. Each team must run their
runners alternately in the same
sequence. Teams will have maps and
course descriptions and are
responsible for directing their
runners. Any runners off course will
have to resume where they left the
course. All teams must carry their
own watch and score card and keep
their own leg times. Please use only
one vehicle to each team and display
a team name sign on that vehicle.
Registration fee is $75 per team,
payable to Warm Springs Recreation
Department and fill out the form
(available at Recreation office) and
sign a waiver.
Divisions are divided in adult male
and female and co-ed, youth male,
female and co-ed (18 & under).
Winners in each division will receive
a plaque, plus individual awards.
Each member will receive a relay T-shirt.
Weston and Bradford Heath participated in the Mutton Bustin competition at the Bull Bash 95 at the Portland
Memorial Coliseum April 8, 1995. Their mother is Sonya Heath of Warm Springs.
Weston Heath tied for first place in the afternoon session, and won first place in the evening session. One of the
competitors was a boy from Missouri wearing a Mutton Bustin championship jacket. Weston's brother Bradford Heath
received participant trophies for riding across the arena in both sessions.

Ochoco issues
mushroom permit
The Ochoco National Forest has
issued the Confederated Tribes a free
use mushroom permit.
The permit applies only to the B ig
Summit, Paulina, Prineville Ranger
districts of the Ochoco National For
est and Crooked River National
Grassland. Mushrooms harvested
under this permit are for personal use
only and are not to be sold or traded.
While gathering mushrooms, tribal
members must carry their tribal
identification cards.
While collecting mushrooms, it is
required that harvesters not disturb
the surrounding vegetation, not re
move or scrape away the duff layer,
(no raking is allowed), and always
leave some fruiting bodies to pro
duce spores for the next crop.
