Lazy F Camp, a Christian Youth
Camp located in the Manastash Can
yon near Ellensburg, WA (north of
Yakima) is currently seeking Native
American applicants with a Chris
tian faith to fill a summer program
director position. Following is some
information about the program.
The primary purpose of camping
programs at Lazy F Camp is to pro
vide an open, loving, caring Chris
tian community where staff and
campers experience firsthand the love
of God through Christ. This is a sa
cred place, where the "rules of the
world", such as negativity, put
downs, or unacceptance of others,
are put aside and everyone is ac
cepted and appreciated as a child of
God.
The purpose of the outpost camp
program is to: provide Christian edu
cation outdoors; in a small group
setting; through activities that de
velop an increased awareness of
God's Creation; provide an experi
ence of living in an inclusive and
caring Christian community, and
teach campers outdoor living skills
(cooking over a fire, etc.).
Details about the program: The
program serves 10-14 children each
week; the youngest children are en
tering third grade, the oldest are en
tering eighth grade; the campers and
staff live in teepees in a wooded area
National Earth
Day to be April 22
Spring has officially sprung! Na
tional Earth Day will be April 22,
1995. Environmental Month will be
observed in Warm Springs through
out the month of April. It's a great
time to encourage spring clean-up
around the community.
Warm Springs Elementary School
students will get in on the act through
posteressay contest. One of the best
ways to encourage a cleaner environ
ment is through educating the young
on environmental and natural re
source issues, the theme tor the
posteressay contest will be "Taking
Care of Our Land, Air, Water, and
Recycling".
Many people have already begun
their spring-time yard clean-up. So,
to encourage more spring clean-up,
the Water and Soil office will be
giving out five free extra-large trash
bags. Anyone is welcome to visit the
office and pick some up.
Community members are encour
aged to take pride in their environ
ment around them and get involved
with spring cleaning.

the "main camp" facility; 3-4 volun
teer leaders per week help carry out
the program designed by the Pro
gram Director; the camp director will
provide training and assist the Out
post Program Director in planning
the program; the weeks of the pro
gram are June 18-August 11th, in
cluding staff training and one week
off. (Persons interested in the posi
tion, but who may only be able to
serve from June 24-July 20 are still
encouraged to apply; and meals and
a stipend of $125-$ 150 per week
(depending on experience) is pro
vided. About the camp staff: The sum
mer staff at Lazy F Camp are a cel
ebration of God's diversity. Persons
from around the world and with many
different backgrounds will be a part
of our staff. We know the strength
and depth of spirit that comes from
diversity and learning from each other
a broader understanding of Christ's
message of love for the whole world.
About 12 persons will serve on the
summer staff at Lazy F Camp in
addition to seven year-round employ
ees. The summer staff will include
three persons from West Africa, two
from Northern Ireland, a Mexican
Indian, an Asian American, A Na
tive American and four Euro-Americans.
An additional 20 volunteers
per week who primarily come from
churches in the state will also serve.

Bike rodeo to be held April 22
The morning of April 2, the Warm Springs Police Department received reports of gunshots around the
agency area. Officers at DMJ automotive discovered a 1979 brown Cadillac, with a bullet hole to the
windshield, and a shattered drivers side window. Upon further investigation officers found three shell
casings near the vehicle.
Diabetes
Awareness Day
The Warm Springs Diabetes Pro
gram is sponsoring a Diabetes
Awareness Day on April 27 from
8:30 am to 4:00 pm in the Commu
nitv Health win of the Health and
Wellness Center. The CHRs will be
there to check your blood sugar and
blood pressure from 8:30 am to 9:00 '
am. Other topics and activities in
clude: The Community Health Edu
cation Team's plans for community
diabetes education, the CHRs role in
diabetes care and education, nutri
tion, home blood glucose monitor
ing, how to care for your diabetes
when you are sick, exercise, a film
on the Native American perspective
on diabetes, and a panel discussion
of people who have been successful
in managing their diabetes.
Lunch will be served at 1 2: 1 5 pm.

you don't have the tools to fix it?

A Bike Rodeo will take place on
Saturday, April 22, 1995 from 10 am
to 2 pm. This event will be held at
Jurassic Park, located across from
the Community Center.
Fun events include an obstacle
course to teach bike safety. Booth
that will be showing how to repair a
bike, how to do wheelees and jumps
safely. What types of bike are avail
able, and in-line skate safety. There
will be a resource and bike decorat
ing booth. Other fun events such as
face painting, a BBQ and a parade
have also been scheduled.
To make this event fun for every
one, prizes will be given away. These
prizes are: three bikes, passes to
Kahneeta Resort for swimming, min
iature golf and bike rentals, Bike
water bottles, bike repair kits, bike
helmets and three pair of in-line skate
pads.
Apologies
There is no admission charge to
attend the bike rodeo. The BBQ pa
rade and booths will be free to those
attending. The only requirement is to
have a signed permission slip with a
parent's signature. You do not need
to have a bike to attend but it you do
have a bike, bring it with you. Parent's
please attend this event with your
children. It promises to be very edu
cational for everyone!

youth attending Madras schools can
also pick up permission slips in the
school offices of Madras Elemen
tary, Buff Elementary and the Junior

nity for driving under the influence
of intoxicants on Jan. 2, 1 995. This is
quite a task to do because our justice
system can be very demanding with
certain crimes committed. I would
advise the Juvenile of Warm Springs
to not (repeat) NOT to drink and
drive. I also encourage the youth to
just say no to mind altering chemi
cals and indulge themselves to our
diminishing culture so that Warm
Springs may have a future.

Thomas Jefferson Mireles, Jr. was
born June 1 6, 1 974 in Madras, Oregon
to parents Leah Boise and Thomas
Mireles, Sr. he passed away March
23, 1995 in Warm Springs.
He was a resident of Warm Springs
and an enrolled member of the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs. He had also lived in Seattle,
Washington and Canada. He was
employed with Warm Springs Forest
Product Industries at the time of his
death.
He married Nancy Gilbert on May
7, 1994 at the Warm Springs Shaker
Church. His hobbies included
traveling, building models, playing
football and drawing.
Traditional Dressing Ceremonies
will be Saturday, March 25 at 3 p.m.
at the He He Longhouse. Overnight
services followed Saturday and
Sunday and burial was Monday,
March 27 at sunrise at the Agency
Cemetery. Reggie Winishut
officiated the dressing and Pierson
Mitchell officiated the overnight
services.
Casket bearers were Joe "Fish"
Doney, Gibson Doney, Edgar Boise,
Greg Boise, Trini Ortiz, Jr., Vincent
Ortiz, Tommy Gilbert and Jason
Johnson. Alternates were Sawl
Trevino, Lance Boise, Kurds Boise,
Johnson Heath, Justin Boise and
Wayne Gilbert.
Survivors include his wife Nancy
Gilbert-Mireles, children; Jonathan
Thomas Gilbert and Andrew Paul
Gilbert-Mireles, mother, Leah
LeClaire of Warm Springs and father
Thomas Mireles, Sr. of Salem,
brothers; Brandon Mireles, Young
Phillip Boise and Ezekial LeClaire,
and sisters; Suzy Mireles and Cynthia
LeClaire all of Warm Springs. Also
surviving are his grandmothers Maria
Mireles of Madras and Margaret
Boise of Warm Springs, numerous
aunts, uncles and cousins. He was
preceded in death by his grandfather
Tony Mireles in 1 984 and his brother
Michael Mireles in 1994.

Thirty-three-year-old, Nathan
Smith Jim, Jr. of Warm Springs,
Oregon died in his home, March 31,
1995.
He was born September 15, 1961
in Yakama, Washington to Nathan
Jim, Sr. and Ella Jane Colwash.
He was a lifetime resident of Warm
Springs and an enrolled member of
the Yakama Nation. He attended
schools in Warm Springs and Madras.
He had been employed, at one time,
with the Utilities Department for the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs. He enjoyed the outdoors.
He also liked participating in
powwows and traditional singing and
dancing.
A Traditional Dressing Ceremony
was held Saturday, April 1, 1995 at
the Agency Longhouse in Warm
Springs. Overnight services followed
Saturday and Sunday nights. The
burial took place Monday, April 3,
1995 at the Tenino Cemetery also in
Warm Springs.
Survivors include his parents;
Nathan and Ella (Colwash) Jim of
Warm Springs, his children; Nelson
and William Jim of Yakama,
Washington, Nathena and William
Jim of Warm Springs, brothers; Max
A. and Frank C. Jim of Warm Springs
and Curt B. Jim of Canada, sisters;
Luella Tewee-Farrow of Pendleton,
Lela Tewee of Yakama, Alice Jim
Stewart and Annette Jim of Warm
Springs. Also surviving are numerous
grandparents, aunts, uncles and
cousins from Warm Springs and
Yakama.
